Denim jeans can always be your best friend and I’m sure each one of us has at least half a dozen of jeans in our closet. We have innumerous types of dresses in the world, but there is something really special about denim jeans which makes us come back. Maintaining denims isn’t a herculean task, it just involves a few simple steps. Here I am listing down 6 ways by which you could be ruining the look, wash and fit of your jeans!
1. You’re Washing Your Jeans in A Machine
Washing denims frequently is the major reason why your denim is not looking proper and adding grace to your look. If you wear your denims regularly, they need to be washed once a week maximum. Otherwise, not only will your jeans lose color, but also will stop fitting your body well. Machine wash can increase the chances of shrinkage and of over dried, lifeless denims.
2. You Bleach Your Jeans
Do you really need to use a bleaching powder to wash the denims? Using a bleaching powder can be one of the reasons why your denims are losing their original color and fit. Directly using bleaching powder may turn your blue raw denim into white colored. Also, bleach will spoil the quality of your denims and will make them look old and cheap. Instead of bleaching, let the denims get soaked in cold water with ½ cup of vinegar.
3. You Fold Your Jeans
Yes! No denim enthusiast will ever fold their jeans to store! They would straight away drop the jeans at a place and wear it the next day. Folding denims and keeping them that way will add unnecessary alter the fit and look of the denims overtime. Also, it gives them a well kept and formal look. If you need the raw look of faded knees and thighs, stay away from folding.
4. You Use Soap to Clean Stains
If your beloved jeans happens to come in contact with a stain or two, don’t ever start rubbing it with a soap. Soap will only aggravate the mess and will also spoil the quality of the fabric. Also, harsh soaps have the tendency to make the jeans lose its color, so might make your jeans look odd. So, what should you do instead? Scrub the affected area with a damp towel to remove the stains. Slowly and gradually stains will go away and the health of your denims won’t get affected.
5. You Don’t Give Your Jeans Special Treatment
The latest and perhaps the quirkiest denim-do involves a fabric refresher and your freezer. This experiment sounds strange, but also is said to be one of the most effective ways to refresh a pair of denims. All you need to do is spray some fabric refresher over the denim and let it dry. Once the refresher gets dried completely, you can fold the jeans (this is the only case where you are supposed to fold the jeans). Next, put it in a plastic pouch and store it in the freezer. This will help to remove the smell and will also make the denim look fresh and crisp. Leaving this overnight will help to kill the bacteria too.
6. You Are Not Drying It Right
Your denims hate heat and this is the reason why they should not be dried under direct sunlight ever! This will make the fabric look dull and also you can feel the discoloration pattern on the exposed side of the denim. It is also advised not to toss the denim into the machine dryer as it also releases tremendous heat. They should be dried in natural air even if they take more than a day. If you need to hang and dry your denims in the sun, hang them inside out.
