Each country has its beauty secrets, handed down through generations. The ancient tips often find a new fan following due to launches and gimmicks by the cosmetic world. Morocco is a beautiful country in Northern Africa, cradled in the lap of nature with high mountains, sweeping desert, rugged coastline, and the winding alleyways of ancient medina cities and souks. But some of the world’s finest and most sought after beauty secrets and ingredients are found in this country. In this post, I unveil some beauty secrets from the Moroccan soil.
1. Potent Liquid Gold
The world is going gaga over argan oil today. But for centuries, Moroccan women have used Argan oil, the rarest of all oils, to preserve and enhance the beauty of their skin. In older times, the oil was used topically to treat skin diseases and protect their skin from the harsh, dry climate of the desert. Also referred to as the “Gold of Morocco” because of its deep amber color, Argan oil has famed as an anti-aging treatment and is also known to aid in diminishing acne and stretch marks. The potent oil is a magic potion for skin, hair and nails.
2. Cleansing Clay
A beauty tip Moroccan people have religiously followed for centuries, different types of clay mainly Rhassoul or ghassoul clay, play an important role in the cleansing and detoxifying process. This can be used as a detoxifying cleanser, skin conditioner or body mask, and surpasses other clays in its content of silica, magnesium, potassium and calcium. This mineral-rich rhassoul clay is blended with orange flower water or rose water to turn it into a sweet-smelling paste which is applied for skin renewing and liberating toxins.
3. Rose Oil
Rose oil is a luxurious oil made from Rosa damascena, or the Moroccan rose. Considered an essential oil with the highest vibration, it is famous for its stress-relieving and soothing properties, as well as its ability to make the skin glowy and smooth. Extracted from actual rose petals, the healing and balancing rose oil is especially suitable for sensitive, dry and aging skin. Rose water, a by-product of the oil, is also used as a cleanser and moisturizer.
4. Spa Touch
Hammam denotes a public steam room and a bath cleansing ritual which plays a pivotal part of the routine of Moroccan people till today. The natives pay a weekly visit to a local Hammam for the ritual-based body treatment that includes cleansing, aromatherapy, detoxification and massage. Known for its healing and transformative powers, the Moroccan Hammam encourages skin smoothing, increases circulation, stimulates the immune system, releases toxins, and relieves stress.
5. Black Soap
A truly miraculous product, Black soap or savon noir, originated in West Africa but gained popularity in Morocco. The black soap is rich in Vitamin E and is antimicrobial, medicinal and detoxifying, as well as aromatic to the senses. It deeply cleanses the skin, making it softer to prepare for exfoliation, and also helps reduce premature signs of aging.
Though aromatherapy is famous in many countries, Morocco is one of the oldest countries where aromatherapy gained popularity. Infused with essential oils like fragrant rose oil, soothing chamomile oil and cypress oil, the massage and healing procedure would awaken senses, heal skin and hair problems, boost mood and rejuvenate body.
7. Softening Shea Butter
Before shea butter single handedly conquered body creams, lotions and so on, this modest ivory fat extracted from the African Shea tree was just community knowledge. So African people, notable Moroccans used Shea butter as a skin softener after bathing. Also, the extreme weather which often played havoc on their skin made them realize the intense nourishing properties of shea. It can heal dryness, acts as an emollient and gives glowing skin.
