From the chemistry that I have studied, water becomes hard when the concentration of minerals like calcium and magnesium is increased in it. A surfactant does not work in the hard water as the chemicals react with each other and form a slime-like sticky end product rather than lather or foam. As the shampoo is not able to create much lather, your scalp and hair end up with too much dirt and residue. This leads to a dandruff-prone scalp and dry and dull hair. Hence, when you are living in a hard-water region, your hair is definitely not very happy with it. Choosing a shampoo that can work in hard water is a bit of a task. To my knowledge, either a clarifying shampoo or a sulphate free shampoo would work best for your hair. The reason to opt for a clarifying or chelating shampoo is that these are strong enough to cleanse your scalp and hair deeply. The shampoo removes the entire mineral accumulated on the scalp, making it clean and fresh. The reason for opting for a sulphate-free shampoo is because of an ingredient namely Cocamidopropyl betaine. This is added to sulphate-free shampoos and acts as a mild cleanser. It does not react with the minerals present in the hard water, making it perfect for use for those living in the hard-water areas.
