9 Awesome Tips to Get an Amazing Makeover

Get an amazing makeover – the right way!

You know all those movies we’ve seen, where a girl who thinks she’s ordinary gets transformed just by a makeover? Think Clueless, The Princess Diaries, She’s all that (basically most chick flicks :P) Most of the time in these movies it takes a lot of time, money and help to transform a girl’s look. If you have a signature look like a certain haircut, or a certain makeup routine, and if ‘Be bold! Try something different!’ is something you often hear from friends and family, or if you just want to go all out and experiment, a makeover is just the way to go.

When I was in school I was totally the ‘padhakoo-types’ – or so I thought. I was a tomboy till I was 14, and had the same haircut (yes, the boycut) for 14 long years. I didn’t even bother looking in the mirror or dressing up – it would just be jeans and tshirt, shorts, you know 😛
When I got to class 11 and 12 I started growing my hair out but it was horribly frizzy and tangled and I had no idea about hair care or anything like that, while my more conscious classmates would go get French manicures and chemical straightening which I hadn’t the slightest clue about 😛 Once I started paying attention to articles, magazines and flipping through books I realized it was time for a change. So when it was time for college, I decided enough is enough and went ahead and completely changed my look. I was a totally new person too, and was tons more confident.

A lot of makeup counters and some salons give makeovers – they are an easy way to find out what works for you and what doesn’t so that you can incorporate it into your routine. Here are the points you need to keep in mind when going for a makeover –

1. Choose a brand: MAC, Clinique, Faces, Maybelline, The Body Shop…sigh. With so many brands it’s no wonder that it’s confusing! So it’s always best to do a little research before you go for the actual makeover. Take a day to just check out the products – eyeshadows, lipsticks, foundation, blushes. Swatch them, look at colour, pigmentation, fallout, texture and so on. Find out the prices, and work out a budget – you wouldn’t want to end up going out of your budget after getting a whole makeover now, would you? Observe others getting a makeover done and see if you like the ‘after’ look.

2. Fix an appointment: First, look for a makeup artist who has a style you admire. Make sure you’ve seen the kind of work she/he has done before, and make sure it matches up to what you’re looking at. Don’t go by how pretty she is or by how old he/she is. (Yes, I know, if Wayne Goss was to be my makeup artist I’d say yes in a heartbeat 😛 but make sure that’s not the ONLY factor!) Then make sure you fix a proper appointment and be punctual – being late is rude and leaves the person lesser time for the next one.

3. Avoid wearing makeup: What?! Did you hear right? Did I just say don’t wear makeup? Surely that’s the opposite of what you want to do? But seriously, don’t go to the appointment with your usual makeup slathered on. Do a proper CTM and go with a clean face. A face is like a canvas for the makeup artist to brighten up, so make sure she/he knows what you look like bare-faced. Plus you’ll learn new application techniques when the artist does everything for you from the start.

4. Do your research: You should always have some idea of what you want – imagine how frustrating it is when they ask you what style you want and you say ‘anything’. Go through beauty and fashion magazines to find out what you want, maybe even carry a clipping with you to make it even clearer. If you like a particular makeup look but aren’t sure how it’ll look on you, understand that it’s their job to adapt it to your face. Plus if you don’t like it you can always wash it off!

5. Stick to a budget: Before you actually go, have a realistic idea of how much you’re willing to spend – you don’t want any nasty shocks once it’s all done. This will help you not overspend, and you can even negotiate with your own self – for example if you’d love to buy the blush but can’t, would you buy the lipstick?

6. Carry your cosmetics with you: You may, by chance, already have some of the products already or have dupes of the same with you, so make sure you carry some of your existing stuff too, so that you don’t end up buying more of the same stuff.

7. Don’t be afraid to speak up: TAs and makeup artists tend to be pretty persuasive, since it’s their job, let’s face it, to sell it to you. But don’t get pushed by their pitches unless you actually want the product – remember it’s their job to sell it, but you can always say ‘no, thanks’, or tell them you’d stop by later. That’ll prevent you from making impulse purchases because you felt bad to say no.

8. Get a friend’s feedback: Your best friend or your close friends is likely to know you inside out and be able to give an outsider’s perspective on the look you want, so make sure you bring a friend to see the overall look or even snap a pic on your phone and send it to a makeup-savvy friend to get their views.

9. Don’t buy up the place: Yes, Rati’s haul posts, and pics like the one below can make you go ‘OMMMMGGGG I WANT THEM ALL’ and make you feel like buying all the products the MA used, but be realistic. Take your time; walk around the store, reflect on what you already have and what you want to get and you’ll find that you could do without a few items, and you can always come back just in case you missed something.

Well, that’s it from me. Hope you guys found this helpful and use it on your next makeover!! xx

  1. Whoa 😀 I can totally relate tyo what you were trying to say about being a tomboy back in school – carefree about your appearance 😀 Then gradually becoming more feminine and polished about one`s appearance. Is that your collection btw ? EPIC.

    1. That’s just how it was for me!! Now I’m a lot more girly compared to when I was um, actually a girl and not grown up 😛 haha. Noooo that’s not my collection, I’d kill to have a collection like that! It’s a random makeup artist’s workstation.

    1. They are?? I should try them, argh. Whenever I go to a Maybelline or L’Oreal counter I get hounded by SAs and people pushing for stuff, it’s annoying to say no thanks a zillion times haha. Even after you buy stuff they ask you for more.

  2. Great article with all the important points highlighted! I looked like a tomboy till the 4th std! While all my friends had long hair I was just a “is it a boy or a girl” with a bob cut. But then I grew out my hair started wearing skirts and girly tops and eventually transformed into a girl.
