9 Everyday Habits That Are Really Ageing Your Skin

Hope you’re doing well. Today’s post is about some everyday habits of ours that we very unthinkingly adopt. However, these very common habits are actually ageing our skin much, much faster than we’d like to believe! Of course, ageing is a natural and inevitable process and we must learn to embrace our ageing processes in order to age gracefully. However, it would be terrible if at 30 you start looking like you’re 40 or 50! It is premature ageing that we need to avoid. So, let’s take a look at these 9 everyday habits so that we can recognize them and keep them in check to prevent premature ageing.

1. Not wearing sunscreen every single day:

This has been said time and again. Wearing sunscreen every single day—whether it’s a sunny day, a rainy day, a cloudy day or a chilly day—is non-negotiable. Almost ninety per cent of premature ageing (fine lines, wrinkles, sagging) happens because of sun damage. Never skip your sunscreen!

2.  Not wearing sunglasses:

Sunglasses are much more than just fashion accessories. They protect the delicate area around your eyes from sun damage. Moreover, wearing sunglasses prevents squinting in the sun, which can lead to long-term wrinkle formation and crow’s feet around the eyes. Always carry a pair of sunglasses in your handbag.

3.  Spending too much time on devices:

Constantly looking at a screen – your phone, laptop or TV- can lead to back, shoulder and neck issues. But when you’re always bending forward or looking down at a screen, you’re also causing wrinkles to form on your neck. For one, limit your screen time to only what’s absolutely necessary. Secondly, make sure your screens are placed at the eye level.

4.  Eating unhealthily:

The foods that you eat have a direct effect on your skin. If you go on a junk food diet even for a few days, you will notice that your skin looks dull and dehydrated. Imagine what happens when you eat unhealthily on a regular basis! Sugar (which is present in large quantities in most junk foods) is known to break down the collagen in your skin, leading to premature ageing.

5.  Smoking:

Needless to say, there is a clear correlation between smoking and premature ageing. Apart from that, smoking is harmful for you in every way possible. The sooner you quit, the better it is for not only your skin but for your entire system.

6.  Lack of proper skincare:

Not maintaining a proper skincare routine and not making sure to remove your makeup before going to bed can lead to premature ageing. Your skin rejuvenates and repairs itself every night, for which it needs to be clean and well taken care of.

7.  Drinking with a straw:

If you use straws to drink beverages more often than not, then be warned that this could lead to premature and permanent wrinkles around the mouth. Of course, drinking with a straw is great to prevent staining your teeth, but it also has this downside.

8.  Sleeping on your face:

Sleeping on your side or on your face night after night, year after year, can lead to that side of your face looking more aged than the other. To avoid sleep wrinkles, develop the habit of sleeping on your back.

9.  Being constantly stressed out:

Stress is a common part of our everyday lives. Literally everything in our lives can become a source of stress and it can become very hard to avoid that. However, if you find yourself feeling constantly stressed, your body will not be able to relax and regenerate, which can lead to premature ageing. It’s important to keep your stress in check by taking to exercise, meditation, creative expression, or anything else that helps you relax and regroup.
