A Complete Guide On Treating Chapped Lips

Hi everyone,

We all know how important it is to take care of our lips; after all, they go through so much. Dry and chapped lips can hamper your whole makeup look and make you feel uncomfortable. It’s not only the winter wind that can cause chapped lips; we need to take care of our lips all year around whether it’s spring or the upcoming harsh summer. The skin on our lips is four to five times thinner compared than the skin on our face; also they don’t have any oil glands. Therefore, we need to take special care for the perfect pout.

Choosing the right lip balm:

how to treat chapped lips

Lip balms or lip butters are a must for taking care of our lips. But unless you’re using the right lip balm, it’s not going to work.
• If you are currently suffering from chapped lips, skip tinted lip balms till your lips are healed. They’ll exaggerate both the appearance and condition of chapped lips. Since fragrances can cause allergic reactions, stick to balms without strong scents or flavours.
• Whenever you are going out use, a lip balm of at least SPF 15. Lips are very sensitive to the sun, so they need lots of protection from it. Otherwise, chapping can just get worse.
• Choose the most emollient balm you can find. Look for ingredients such as petrolatum, beeswax, Shea butter, cocoa butter, or oils such as almond or jojoba to help lock in moisture and soften and protect lips.
• During night time use lip butters or heavy duty lip balms. You’re not going to apply lip balm every two hours when you sleep; therefore you need super moisturising lip butter that nourish your lips while you sleep.

Diet:

What we eat affects all parts of our body. You need to get a balanced diet to maintain soft lips.
• Check your intake of Vitamin B complex. All of the B complex vitamins contribute to your skin’s health, but some key players, such as niacin (vitamin B3) and riboflavin (vitamin B2) really boost your skin’s ability to retain moisture. Vitamin E, also plays an important role. Green vegetables such as spinach, green beans are fantastic sources of niacin, and riboflavin is readily available in dairy foods and almonds. Almonds are a great source of vitamin E too.
• Say goodbye salty treats, fried food and spicy food for a while because they can dry out your lips.

Habits:

• Before you wash your face, apply a balm to your lips. Your cleanser may actually be drying out your lips—both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide disrupt your pH balance and can cause chapping.
• It’s always been told don’t lick your lips, and we must follow this age old advice. By licking your lips, you are adding moisture that easily evaporates seconds later. This can dry lips out very quickly.
• Do not ever pluck the flaky skin from your lips no matter how much it irritates you. Exfoliate your lips to get rid of the flakes.
• No condition can be treated without the use of the miracle liquid- water. Drink lots of water, generally about eight glasses a day — to keep your moisture levels balanced. Remember: If you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.

Exfoliation:

Sugar lip scrub

Since the lips are more delicate than the face, you need to exfoliate them carefully. Follow these simple steps once or twice a week to get smooth and soft lips.
• Apply a layer of honey to your lips just like you apply a lip balm. Let it sit for about ten minutes. This will soften the skin and make exfoliation easy.
• After ten minutes take some superfine sugar, and scrub away the dead skin. Over exfoliation can damage your lips, so be careful and use gentle circular motion.
• Wash and follow with a lip balm.
• You can use any of the lip scrub recipe or buy a lip scrub, but make sure that your lips are well hydrated and soft before you start scrubbing. Instead of honey, you can also use almond oil or even Vaseline.

Home Remedies:

A-Complete-Guide-To-Chapped-Lips Home remedies

There are a lot of home remedies for treating chapped lips. But make sure you stick to one kind of treatment at a time. Using different methods in one go for any condition can worsen it even more.

• Make a mixture of rose water and glycerine in a 3:1 ratio. Apply this mixture to your lips daily at night before you go to sleep and wake up with soft lips.
• Apply a few drops of ghee on your lips, before going to sleep. It will give you smooth and soft lips, within no time.
• Take a few drops of jojoba oil and apply it on the affected area. You need to leave it on for about 15 minutes. Jojoba oil helps in a speedy recovery of your lips. It will get the moisture back into your lips, by nurturing the skin cells in the lips. It helps in building new skin cells which will repair the skin immediately.
• Apply honey in the night before going to bed. It is the best way to clean your lips. It will also cure dark lips, caused due to sun exposure.
• Press one used green tea bag, against your lips for at least 4 minutes. You need to do this every day to increase the moisture of your lips.
• Apply a mixture of almond oil and castor oil in equal ratio on your lips to heal the dryness. This will also reduce pigmentation.

I hope this helps you in taking care of your lips. Be patient with the remedies and take care of all the factors such as diet, your daily habits and products you use. If your chapped lips don’t show any sign of improvement or if you have severe chapped lips please consult your dermatologist; it can be an allergic reaction also.

Take care.
