All about Tightlining

Hello ladies,
Tightlining, though the name sounds very action packed and less so glam, is in fact an amazing makeup technique that makes your eyes look so glam. It is basically an eyeliner technique that adds structure and definition to your eyes, making them look fuller. Read on to find out the details about this method.

What exactly is tightlining?

It is a savvy eyeliner technique to apply eyeliner inside the lash line, on the water line. It thus fills any gaps in the waterline and creates contrast with the iris of your eyes. It adds definition to your eyes without looking made up. If done right, it should look like you are not wearing any eyeliner at all. Hence it is also known as ‘invisible eyeliner technique’.

Works best on:

…EYERYONE. Yes! The trick is especially great for hooded eyes and other eye shapes that look made-up with the traditional eyeliner swipes. But that does not mean everyone can not try this. Tight-lining is for all skin tones, all eye shapes, and make-up enthusiasts of all levels and can be worn to all occasions.

How to tightline:

how to tightline
Step 1: Place a mirror on a flat surface so that you are looking down on it. Look down on the mirror with chin angled upwards and eyes staring down. This will help you get to your waterline easily.

Step 2: Use one hand to gently pull up the eyelid and use the other hand (preferably your dominant hand) to hold the pencil/pen/brush to tight-line.

Step 3: Dip a flat make-up brush into your eyeliner product. Then, hold the tip vertically and wiggle the tip of the brush, dot and dash into the upper waterline.

Step 4: Work from the outer corner to the inner corner, wiggling across the way. Fill in till where you have your lashes. Because the main trick is to make the lashes appear fuller and more lush.

Step 5: To clean any smudges, use a cotton ball or Q-tip dipped in a water-based make-up remover.

A few tips:

Tightlining
• Beginners can start with an eyeliner pencil, and then proceed to a felt-tip pen. Finally when you get hold of the technique, proceed for brushes.
• Be careful while working with sharpened pencils near your eye ball.
• You can go on gradually building the look until you are happy with it.
• Let the liner dry for a few seconds before you curl your lashes.
• Tightlining does not need to be done alone. Doing it along with your everyday eyeliner routine will add more definition to the eyes.

  2. I knew how to do it but was always scared to try. Believe me after reading this article I decided to give it a try. I tried on one eye in the evening. It looked great and was do able. So, today to work I have done it on both the eyes and am loving the effect. Am so glad I tired it finally. Tips to remove the product will be appreciated 🙂
I found it little hard to remove the product and kind of left it over night (trial makeup on one eye).

  3. Hi Prerana, Hi Deepashree,

You can use a q-tip to remove the eyeliner. It totally depends on you whether you want to use an oil based or a water based eye makeup remover. Make sure it is one you’ve used before and suits you well.
In case you do not have a q tip and a makeup remover, go for a cotton bud/ear bud and a baby oil or coconut oil or vaseline.

    Hope it helps! 🙂
