What is a chemical skin peeling?

Peeling is a procedure in which a mild acid solution, usually a fruit acid, is applied to the face to remove the outermost layer of cells. There is usually a balance between new cells being formed and old ones being removed. With age however, this gets decreased. So, the basic idea of peels is to accelerate the exfoliation process and get rid of the topmost layer of dead skin cells. The new skin that comes up is softer, smoother and has fewer imperfections.

Classes of chemical peels:

1. There are 3 classes: superficial or light peels, medium peels and deep peels.
Superficial peels are so called because they just accelerate exfoliation, instead of causing proper peeling. The downtime for recovery is very less. You may notice healthy, fresh and glowing skin almost immediately.
2. Medium peels use a solution that can soak in deep enough in one peel. These are safe to use on the neck, hands, and other areas. They would cause a blister-like wound, which when heals, gives place to the new skin to form.
3. Deep peels use a solution that removes several layers of skin to address deep wrinkles, creases, uneven colour, and some precancerous skin growths. They work by causing a partial thickness wound. When it heals, it not only cause skin regeneration but also boosts collagen formation. You can only have one deep peel in your life.

What is the recovery time?

With light peels, the results are almost immediate. They take 20 minutes and require very less time for recovery. Medium and deep peels require a lot of recovery time, during which you might have to take antiviral medication and stay indoors. After a medium peel, skin will be red and swollen for days. The skin peels off in 7 to 14 days. After deep peels, the face is bandaged and this process may take up to several weeks to heal. During recovery, you soak your face several times a day. At all other times, the face is covered with ointment to prevent scabs and scars.

  1. Would just like to add a point, its extremely important to ask them about the post peel care. The biggest mistake people make post peel sessions is going out in sun without protection. I know a couple of people who have burned their skin due to not wearing enough SPF level or not wearing sunscreen at all, because the salon guys didn’t advice properly.
Best would be wearing sunscreen plus carry an umbrella or cover yourself with a scarf for 2-4 days when going out in sun.

    1. Exactly Smita!
Sunscreen is crucial for post peel care. People need to avoid the sun as much as possible and never go out without a sunscreen. Thank you so much for pointing out!!!! I hope everyone going to get a peel take notice and skip this mistake!

      Thank you!!! <3
