For the longest time, I have stuck to a blue liner from a local brand. Although I totally recommend using quality products, I kept on using the liner because it was beautifully pigmented, didn’t smudge or irritate my eyes; and, I didn’t find close counterparts in drugstore or even mid-end brands. Very recently, I saw this Almay Gel Smooth liner in the store and didn’t really think much about it. It was only after I came home that I realized that the color was identical to my favorite blue liner. And I didn’t waste any time in getting this! Presenting Almay Intense i-Color Gel Smooth Liner #032 Navy/Marine for today’s review.

My Experience with Almay Intense i-Color Gel Smooth Liner Navy Marine:

Packaging: Like most other liners, this gel pencil comes with a color-coded outer body. It has a beautiful glossy navy blue finish with a transparent cap. The cap isn’t very sturdy, neither really flimsy, but may crack under pressure. Product details are mentioned on the pencil body. It comes in a properly sealed cardboard pack which houses necessary details.

Color: Let’s start with the color. You might have guessed my love for this color. I adore intense navy or ink blue shades. While I also love turquoise or sea blue, they are not wearable for very formal events. For most days, I stick to black, grey or navy liners because they are easy to carry. This is a beautiful deep blue color, aptly termed marine blue which reminds you of deep fathomless oceans. There is a mystery associated with this blue shade. It has a sheen, which doesn’t look gaudy or loud at all. A very wearable blue for all occasions.

Pigmentation and Texture: I am somewhat let down by the pigmentation. It has quite an “okay” pigmentation, it shows up as a lighter version of the original shade. You need at least 3 swipes to get the desired color. The texture is good. It lives up to the name of gel smooth liner, as it glides on your delicate lids effortlessly. However, since the pigmentation sucks, you will need to go over the area again. The texture is creamy, but not doesn’t crumble very easily.

Staying Power: Great! It stays on my oily eyelids for 7 hours or so without a primer, and I have worn it for 10 hours straight with primer. Yes, the intensity definitely lessened, but it didn’t spread or budge. This eyeliner is smudge-proof and waterproof. I have worn it for a day trip outskirts of Mumbai, and faced relentless rain, yet when I returned at night, I could see the liner intact, albeit faded.

The main problem is sharpening. This is not easy to sharpen. Almay has disappointed users with the inefficient design which crumbles on sharpening. I sharpened it once, and I am scared of doing it again.

It breaks badly, and you end up losing way too much product. Plus, you never really get the pointed tip. I wish it was retractable. Almay should re-design this liner as the performance is really good.

• For the number of uses, the price is high.

Would I Repurchase/Recommend Almay Intense i-Color Gel Smooth Liner Navy Marine?
For the color and performance, yes. For sharpening issues, I honestly feel you may or may not be lucky. So probably stick to safer options like L’Oreal and Maybelline gel liners.
