Aromatherapy Relaxing Foot Massage

Foot MassageHow many of us admit we extremely neglect our feet? When just warm water and salt can do the trick, why do we neglect feet? I know it sounds gross, but I never considered foot a part of my own body! No wonder my feet do not match my body and look like somebody else’s! Just the way prosthetics look! Who would really want that? Nobody can beat me in being lazy, but what if you are my competitor? Come relax! Treat yourself to a soothing aromatherapy soak followed by foot massage with the help of our Virtual Masseur! Long story shortly put; soak your feet in aromatic oils before massage!

Choosing oils is the vital part of any aromatherapy ritual! We are supposed to use the ones with complimentary effects! As far as my knowledge goes, oils fall into three main categories – Stimulating, Relaxing and Therapeutic! It seems Therapeutic oils work well alone or when mixed with Stimulating and Relaxing oils! But, Stimulating and Relaxing oils become useless when mixed together! So, it’s always better to use the prescribed oils under supervision! Now that we got to know the basics, shall we start the massage? Make sure you have everything handy; towels and oil! Should I tell you to protect your clothing and furniture from the massage oils? Who doesn’t like soothing music throughout the massage? After all, it’s a matter of relaxation and your me-time! I highly recommend Enigma and Buddha Bar!

Aromatherapy OilsI am talking about a layman’s foot massage, not the professional way! Here, there is nothing like reflex points and nerve zones involved! If you are ready for that, comfort yourself on an upright seat! No harm in adding cushions for more comfort! Take a large bowl of hot water and place your feet in! For every litre of water, add a drop of essential oil! Soak your feet for 10 minutes! Later, start massaging one of your damp feet! It helps absorb oils better! Some recommend and prefer dry feet before massage! What does any moisturizer label read? Use when skin is damp! It helps the product sink into the skin, right? The same logic is applied here! Warming up avoids any kind of discomfort! To warm up your hands prior to massage, rub the massage oil between your palms! Remember to use a firm touch throughout the massage! For massage, you should always choose a position according to your comfort! Otherwise, stretch both the legs and bend one leg at the knee! My interpretation; Position 4! To make it easier, one leg’s calf rests on other leg’s thigh! Start massaging your bent leg foot! Sandwich the foot with the palms of your hands! Rub back and forth frictionally fast using lots of oil! Don’t forget to rub your heel part and the sides, of course! Give a brisk massage! This helps boost circulation and relaxation! This also helps in warming up cold feet!

Stretch your foot! Hold each stretch for a decent amount of time! Count 10, for instance! Flex your toes up and down! Make circles in the air! Use the tips of your thumb and index finger to pinch all over! Use your thumb to make small circles all over the sole in a kneading movement! Firmly rub each toe from base to tip between your thumb and index finger for about two to three minutes! Wrap your fingers across the tips of your toes! Finish off with a fast frictional rub over the toes to warm them up and also to increase blood circulation! Repeat the stretches with thumb strokes! Place one hand on top of the foot, palm on the sole! Start at the toes with hands working simultaneously, firmly pull with hands! Follow the contours of the foot back up to the ankle! Treat both the feet same way as our body doesn’t like asymmetry!

Aromatherapy MassageLet’s consider soaking your feet a footbath! You can use the same oils for footbath and massage! You can also use a therapeutic oil for footbath and sensual oil for massage! There is nothing like a limitation for the massage! You are free to repeat the steps! If the sound of prescribed oils under supervision scares you, better use common oils! For instance; Castor oil and Extra-Virgin Olive oil! Personally, I love using Peppermint and Lavender oils! Both do not harm me either ways! What’s the point in me using castor oil or olive oil for a relaxing foot massage?

*Apart from the above recommendations, I also consider Body Shop’s Total Energy Essential Oil and Divine Calm Relaxing Massage Oil perfect! I did try both the oils, but again that was just a trial and not consistent! They smell citrusy, gingery and what not! Total Energy Essential Oil is a stronger version, so it’s always recommended to dilute prior to usage! Claims it should not touch the skin directly because it’s too strong to handle! Divine Calm Relaxing Araomatherapy MassageMassage Oil is a lighter version! Perfect for body and foot massage as well! It has French Lavender Essential oil and Sweet Almond oil included! It seems you can also add Balancing Massage balm along with Divine Calm Relaxing Massage Oil during the procedure to pamper your feet!*

P.S – Unfortunately, I am not your certified Aroma Therapist! I strongly recommend approaching your local Aroma Therapist, just in case! Explain your situation and make sure you get to use the right oils in the right way! Consider this a special warning if you are pregnant or if you suffer from any medical condition as such! Foot massage with aromatherapy can always be fun, but I believe the same therapy for your body needs to be supervised! Choose the oils as prescribed! End of the day, we all need to be happy!

  1. Divija…..lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus are what I like to use for my feet..

Also wanted to ask you..I am using TBS bath gloves..but how frequently can you use them? I get tempted to use them everyday !

    1. Smita,

Bath gloves are the exfoliation gloves. Use them may be twice or thrice a week to exfoliate. Over exfoliation is not good. It would start drying your body.

      1. Hmmmn yes Rati I thought so too…am using twice a week now..but they are so damn tempting…do you use them too??

  2. I love to pamper my feet once in a while , I go for pedi , a pack then a message with olive oil and little bit of peppermint oil , nothing fancy tho 😛

  3. Poornima,

Glad to know I finally tempted you! In a different way, of course LOL 😉 Its not related to SPA, but at ur own place 🙂

  4. Smita,

To be honest, I am yet to try the bath gloves…tanveer says she is tempted to use them everyday, but its quite abrasive for regular use…if u dont find them abrasive, go ahead 🙂 if u can wait for one more week, will let u know my own experience with the bath gloves 🙂

  5. Palak,

It might not sound fancy to u, but anything related to feet sounds heavenly to me…as i neglect my feet to death 🙂 how often do u get a pedi, if u dont mind my asking?

  6. well yes they are tempting ..they make your skin soooo smooth..but I am using them only twice a week now…will wait for your feedback

  7. You know Divija, I always thought about how essential oil should be used in massage. I had bought lemongrass oil for this very purpose around a year ago, but was quite scared that it might cause any burning….I threw it after some months, but now I know what to do with essential oils…thanks a lot!!!!! 🙂

  8. You tempted me soooooo much…. I went and got a pedi done…… Ahhh… Soooo relaxing… :island:  :drink: :clover: :music: 🙂

  9. Palak,

see, youngistan obviously doesnt mean lazy 🙂 u r too young, but u care for ur feet unlike me 🙂 thnq very much!

  10. Smita,

How tempting they might be, as long as they are not abrasive and ur skin doesnt dry up, no harm! I dont advice u, but this is wat I would do! If I find my skin extremely dry, I moisturize! tats it! But to behonest, i am too lazy to use bath gloves on a regular basis 🙂 may be a couple of times a week would do for me! Body Shop says there is anti-bacterial solution in that, so they dont even gather muck 🙂 thnq so much for the waiting part, honey!

  11. Jomol,

To be honest with u, I dont like complicated procedures of anything…be it makeup, skincare whateva! If I have to give my version, I always tend to make it sound easy and practial! Hope u liked my version of massage, dear! Why did u dispose, silly girl? U could have googled & made use of it someway! thnq very much for the sweet comments baby 🙂

  12. Mrunmayee,

goodness, I never thought my version could tempt u to that extent! I can feel ur relaxation, babes 🙂 I want to thanq from the bottom of my heart for all the sweet messages so far 🙂
