Artificial Tears for Eye Care: Systane Review

artificial tearsSometime back I wrote an article on Eye Care here and thought I would add on some more useful bits of info to it. My job demands being in front of the PC for long n long hours, say 9-10 hours daily and am sure it is the same case with most of you. I occasionally use cooling eye drops especially ayurvedic ones as preventive measure but of late I developed kind of irritation and redness of eyes and went to doc for consultation. He carried out numerous tests and handed out a leaflet to me which explained in detail about computer related vision problems, causes and remedies. He prescribed two eye drops, one of which was an immediate solution to my current eye problem to be used for 2-3 days. Another one was this Artificial Tears which he advised to use around 4-5 times on a daily basis.

What are Artificial Tears?

Artificial tears are lubricant eye drops used to treat the dryness and irritation associated with deficient tear production in keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eyes). They are also used to moisten contact lenses and in eye examinations. Artificial tears usually are the first line of treatment for dry eye. While mild cases require application of lubricant drops four times a day, severe cases require more aggressive treatment, such as ten to twelve times a day. Thicker artificial tears can be used in severe cases, although these may temporarily blur vision. (Source: Wikipedia)

Why should we use Artificial Tears?

It is a known fact that prolonged computer usage is often associated with less blinking of eye which in turn leads to dryness. Tears provide lubrication to eyes and thus can combat dryness if you blink eyes often. But while staring at the screen we tend to blink our eye much less than required, and in such conditions where natural tears are absent or inadequate, artificial tears provide relief. Artificial tears combine all of the advantages of natural tears and add two important new benefits: protection of dry ocular tissue from damage by lid – friction and other irritants and- enhanced healing of epithelial tissues. Like natural tears it is optically clear, soothing and lubricating to the eye. It provides comfort and protection to dry eyes. It mixes well with the normal ocular secretions, does not sting or burn and has emollient properties that significantly reduce irritation and improve the degree of comfort.
Several brands of Artificial Tears are available, some over the counter and some with prescription. It is always advisable to consult a doctor before using any kind of eye drops.

For me, the doc prescribed this brand called Systane, a short review follows:
