I have put forward my love for a certain skin care product in many reviews and posts on IMBB. That one single skin care product is sunscreen. Which product is a must in our lives? It’s a sunscreen! Which is the best skin lightening product? It’s a sunscreen. Which is the best anti-ageing skin care product? It’s a sunscreen! Which product helps in prevention of fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, sun burns? It is a sunscreen. Which is a single skin care product, which is common for people of all ages and both sexes? It’s a sunscreen! And, if I ask, which is the skin care product which is not applied judiciously and often neglected (yes, I have seen people skipping it when they go to hilly areas; or even on cloudy days)? Yes, again, it is the sunscreen!
As the Ozone layer of our atmosphere is getting corroded, people now are, more than ever before, at an increased risk of exposure to the harmful UV-A (long waves) and UV-B (short wave) rays of the sun. While short length UV-B rays penetrate only the upper layer of skin and mainly cause sunburn, it has more energy and can therefore do more damage to the skin, including skin cancer. The long length UV-A rays penetrate quite deep but have lesser energy, and are involved in tanning, photo aging and also contribute to skin cancer. SPF is “sun protection factor.” In simple terms, if a person develops sunburn within 5 minutes in the absence of sunscreen, with a sunscreen having a SPF of 15, it will take him 15×5= 75 minutes to develop the same amount of sun burn. So, does that mean; that with higher and higher SPF, we will have 100% protection from the sun? Unfortunately, this is not the case. Researches have shown that SPF of 15 will block 94% UVB rays, SPF 30 will block 97% UVB rays, and SPF of 50 will block around 98% UVB rays. After this, the curve actually plateaus, and higher SPFs will block only slightly more UVB rays; but no sunscreen can block 100% of the rays. India being a tropical nation, needs a sunscreen having SPF of at least 30 for its people.
Compared to a few years back, now, there are so many sunscreen products available in the market. Earlier, sunscreens used to be thick, oily sticky, greasy, and leave an ashy cast on the skin; which was the main reason why people avoided them. But now, there are many brands coming up with sunscreen lotions, creams, emulsions, gels, sprays, which are suitable for all skin types, and are cosmetically acceptable. Also, sun block creams (remember, cricketers putting white cream on their face, well that is sunblock), after sun gels, de-tanning gels and masks, and lotions for sun intolerant skin types too have totally flooded the market. Today, I will be reviewing a sunscreen, which I have been using for some time, and I am liking the results.
The Very High Protective Emulsion SPF50+ is specially formulated for hypersensitive skin, light and very fair skin; skin prone to sunburn and skin exposed to extreme sunlight. It covers a very broad spectrum UV protection using a combination of exclusive active ingredients. SunSitive protection® from Pierre Fabre Research. Its photoprotective complex is optimised, stable and effective for extended periods. It offers the best protection against UVB and also long and short UVA radiations. Pre-tocopheryl, a vitamin E precursor (powerful antioxidant) protects the skin cells from free radicals, rich in Avene Thermal Spring Water, skin benefits from its soothing and anti-irritant properties; the new active ingredient GlycerylLaurate, to help to regulate excess oil and gives the skin an instant matte finish thanks to presence of mattifyingfators. No white residue.
Rs. 1250/- for 50 ml of product, I got it at a discount price of Rs. 750/-
My Experience with Avene Eau Thermale Very High Protection Emulsion SPF 50+:
Avene sunscreens come with a SPF of 10, 20, 30 and 50+. These are available in cream, emulsion, lotion, stick form and even sprays. These are suitable to be used on both adult and children skin.
For this humid season, I chose the emulsion for myself, thinking that cream might be more heavy, and should be suitable on my dry skin in winters. Well, since using the product, I have come to a conclusion that the emulsion will be good enough for me even in winters.
The product comes in a delightful orange color box packaging. All the details of the product are written on the box itself. Inside the box, the sunscreen emulsion is present in a tube, along with an information leaflet. The tube is a squeezable one, with a pump dispenser at its mouth, which in turn is covered by a plastic cap. The entire system is hygienic, mess free, and ensures that no wastage occurs; besides being extremely travel friendly.
The tube has to be squeezed and the pump has to be pressed at the same time, for dispensing of product. The sunscreen emulsion is white in color, has a mild floral fragrance. The consistency is between that of a cream and a lotion; neither too thick, nor too runny. The emulsion spreads on skin very easily. One to two pumps are more than adequate for the face and neck area. After proper blending, it sinks into the skin completely, without leaving any whitish or ashy cast on the face. It is not a mattifying product; but neither is it oily or greasy. The product gives an almost dewy finish; but has not broken me out or clogged my pores at all. I think that even oily skin types may be able to use this one in winters.
I have been using it since last 3 weeks, and I have been happy with the results. I have applied it alone; under makeup; and even under just a pressed powder. The results have been good with all types of application; and it has indeed protected me from any tan. However, just like any other sunscreen, the major con present here is the reapplication of sunscreen (albeit every four hourly…if you believe the claims). However, I use my Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 45 powder for the reapplication; hence that is not a problem for me.

Would I Repurchase Avene Eau Thermale Very High Protection Emulsion SPF 50+?
Actually, I have not decided yet; and that is just because of the high price. The quality of the product is excellent, but there are so many good sunscreen products out in the market now-a-days which are inexpensive and suit the purpose. However, I will not discourage anyone from using this; especially dry to combination and sensitive skin beauties, since this one is actually an excellent quality product.
