Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector Review

Hello Gorgeous Gals,

I rarely review primers, mainly because it took me a while to realise the importance of one and even when I did, it was still the first step I would skip or forget, when in a hurry. It has been a long journey, but over time, I have understood how much difference a good primer can make to the look. I have experimented with quite a few with varied degrees of success. Today’s review is on Becca’s primer – Ever Matte Powerless Priming Perfector. Let us dig in…

Product Details:
What it is:  A targeted oil-control primer that perfects and minimizes pores for mattified skin that lasts up to 12 hours.  What it does:  Go beyond extending makeup wear to address the root cause of why your makeup moves. This formula specifically targets oil-prone areas and acts as liquid blotting paper to leave your skin fresh and matte all day. Use alone, before, or after foundation to control excess oil, while minimizing the appearance of pores. Feel free to use throughout the day to touch up areas of concern.

Ingredients:
Water, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Propylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylene Glycol, Enantia Chlorantha Bark Extract, Oleanolic Acid.

Price:
USD 36/SGD 56/INR 2800 for 40 ml.
Packaging:
The primer comes packaged in a fairly small deep brown tube with a screw-on cap and silver detailing. The cap comes off to reveal a really small hole which allows extreme control over the product coming out. Why is this necessary -I’ll come to in a bit. The tube comes packaged in a synchronised box – similar in colour – which is unique to Becca. Packaging is functional, no leakage, no mess – so no complaints.

My Experience with Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector:

A face primer is essentially the first step of makeup. It is something which falls between your skincare and your base makeup. There are a plethora of primers in the market – addressing varied needs – mattifying, brightening, colour correcting, hydrating, calming, pore-filling, anti-ageing, etc, etc, etc. It totally depends on your need or your skin’s need which one you pick. You can’t expect the same one to mattify your skin while making it luminous or buy a hydrating one and say it doesn’t work because it’s not mattifying. So, pick the correct product – that’s the first step.

The one thing all primers are required to do – apart from the specific functions mentioned above – is that they need to provide longevity to your makeup. That is one basic function, which does not change, irrespective of other things.

So, before we discuss my experience with the product and its efficacy, let’s see what the company claims the product will deliver and list the expectations from this product:
1. Mattification.
2. Poreless appearance.
3. Priming the face to give longevity to the makeup.

Now, let’s see if it delivers on all three counts.

Before we discuss the efficacy, let’s quickly discuss the texture and application coz that will have a bearing not he efficacy.

The product is silicone, oil, alcohol and fragrance free, which makes it fairly unique in terms of ingredient list as well as texture. The texture is EXTREMELY THICK! And the hole of the tube is extremely small. Honestly, it’s a struggle to get any product out. It takes all your might to get a grain-sized product out and this is exactly the amount you need….no, not for your full face but “at one time.” Here’s the thing, the texture of this one is unlike any product you have experienced – I kid you not. It is really really thick in consistency. It can be melted with the warmth of the finger, but while application, you have to dab it on – not rub, not slide, not spread. Dab it on. You try anything else or if you take more product than a grain sized amount at one time – it will start pilling. You will have small balls of product on your face. So, rule number one, melt it in your finger sand then dab it on. Rule number two, take very small amount at one time and do your face in small sections.

It does not leave a white cast upon application. There is no visible color, which also means, it is not going to even out your complexion or do any colour correction. Company has not made any claims to that effect either.

Now that we have covered application and texture, let’s move on to the efficacy of the product.

1. Mattification: The moment you dab this product on to your skin, that portion of skin will instantly mattify, so far so good. On this, you apply your foundation. While applying the foundation, you have to ensure that you do not end up moving the layer of primer underneath – else it will pill. Second concern is that not all foundations would work with it. For some reason – might have to do with the ingredient list – all foundations do not work well with this as base. Maybe the alcohol in them or the silicone in them breaks the primer down. The net result is that the foundation gets patchy very soon. The only foundation which seems to sit well with this is the MAC Face and Body Foundation. Third concern with the primer is that once you have applied the foundation, and you go in to dust the powder, the powder clings to the parts where the primer has been applied. If you have used too much powder, it will look patchy. Actual effect of mattification – with most of my foundations, the primer did not mattify for too long – say about 4-5 hours post after which the shine came back. This is keeping in mind that we are not in warm summer months right now. The only foundation it worked and continued to mattify with was again the MAC Face and Body Foundation.

Having said, all of the above, there is a unique feature to the primer. You can use it on bare skin, under foundation or over foundation! Yes, you heard that right! It can actually be dabbed on over the foundation and it will continue to mattify. So, instead of using blotting paper or post using blotting paper, just dab this onto the key areas and you are good to go for another 4-5 hours. This aspect is fairly unique and works like a charm. The only issue – if the primer and foundation aren’t working well together and causing the foundation to break, mattifying your skin is the least of your concerns!

2. Poreless Appearance – Sum it up in one sentence – It doesn’t do squat for your pores! Zilch! Nothing! Nada! Generally a silicone primer tends to work well because it will fill up the pores. This one does absolutely nothing and I should I know because I have crater on my face. I am not saying it as a means of deprecating humour. I mean it – I have pores galore and extremely visible ones. This does nothing to hide, fill, camouflage them.

3. Priming the face to give longevity to the makeup. Yes, it does increase the wear time of my makeup by a couple of hours, but nothing spectacular.

I really wanted to like this product but can’t say that it lives up to the claims made by the company.

To sum this up for you:

Pros of Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector:

  • Excellent packaging.
  • Mattifies the skin instantly.
  • Can be use without makeup, under makeup or over it.
  • Unique USP for being able to dab it on top of makeup to mattify the skin.
  • Increases the wear time of makeup.
  • Does not leave a white cast.
  • Travel-friendly packaging.

Cons of Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector:

  • There is a learning curve as to how to apply it.
  • Does not sit well with all foundations – tends to break down the foundation and make it look patchy.
  • Does not mattify all foundations for too long – works well with only a few.
  • You have to be careful while applying base makeup over it to ensure it does not end up piling.
  • Does nothing for pores – even though the company claims a “poreless” perfection.

IMBB Rating:
A 2.5/5 product.

I think the product’s USP lies in the fact that it can be used over makeup to matttify the skin, but for everything else, I feel there are a plethora of other primers which can work better and has little to no learning curve in terms of how to use them. Honestly, I picked it up under duress because I was trying to get free shipping or something and needed to pick another product, but I definitely won’t be repurchasing. Also, I don’t think I am going to be experimenting with it much. I leave it to be used under MAC F&B and drop into my purse to dab over the foundation, if required.

Do I Recommend Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector?
If you go in with low expectations and take it only to be used over foundation, pls go ahead and buy it. If you want mattifying primer as base or pore-less complexion, please skip this one.

One last word of advice, dry skinned beauties – stay away from this. This product will accentuate your dry patches and make the base product cling.

  1. i saw this title and thought wow! another amazing product from becca! but sad this one turned out like this. what a tricky one to use.. 😐 loved the packaging of this one…but still that’s an issue..but whatever. 😛 thanks for the heads up! 🙂

    1. If a make up product has a steep learning curve – that itself is a deterrent for someone to buy it. If, on top of it, it doesn’t perform as claimed but the Company – its just pointless. So bummed – coz one it was pricey; two, the packaging is so neat; and three – Love Becca!!!
