Benefits of Oiling Your Hair

Hi Girls,
How are you all doing? We all have heard numerous benefits of oiling our hair from our moms and grand moms. When I was a kid, my mom would forcefully oil my hair on every Saturday evening as Sunday used to be the shampooing day for us! I used to hate to get my hair oiled so much and would do anything to escape it! She sometimes used to ask me to apply oil after shampooing to control the frizz as in those days we did not know about conditioners and serums.

My mom came to stay with me last week and she again asked me to oil my hair. That’s when I thought of researching more about this practise and came up with a few benefits of oiling our hair. Read below to know more…

• Oiling boosts hair growth. Hair grows when they are given enough nourishment. It also requires regular feed of vitamins and other essential nutrients just like our skin and other organs does. Massaging your hair twice a week will regain whatever hair you have lost in the process of curling, ironing and chemical treatments.

• Oil massage facilitates blood circulation and helps in opening up the pores.

• Massaging our scalp with warm oil helps in distressing. It acts like a stress buster which is also one of the major causes of hair fall.

Benefits of Oiling Your Hair

• Regular oiling keeps our hair well stranded in a single thread than like lint of thread. Oil keeps the split ends together and nourishes it from outside, thus adding lustre and shine to your curls.

Benefits of Oiling Your Hair

• Dandruff is a result of dry scalp. Oiling hydrates the scalp and helps in controlling dandruff. A mild shampoo and conditioner should be used in this case to manage the dandruff condition.

• Oil acts as a lubricant on hair preventing it from harsh environment.

Now the question arises that how often should we oil our hair? In this busy hectic life, it is impossible to spend 2-3 days in a week to massage our hair. Depending on your hair type, we can choose when to oil our hair:

Oily Hair: People with oily scalp have oily hair. People with this kind of hair should limit the application of oil, keeping it once a week on an average. Along with that using a proper shampoo to get rid of the oiliness is very important.

Dry Hair: Dry hair is prone to damage the most. They are rough, brittle and more prone to breakage and split ends. People with dry hair should be very regular in applying oil to their hair, with at least keeping it to 2 times per week. Deep oiling of hair is recommended once in 15 days followed by steaming of hair for a few minutes to help oil go deep inside.

Normal Hair: Normal hair is very easy to handle and maintain. They are not dry, neither oily and thus carry the perfect balance of hair moisture which makes hair look shiny and bouncy. People with this kind of hair can choose to oil their hair once in 15 days to nourish the scalp and roots.

These days various kinds of oils are in rage like Moroccan Oil and other essential oils. You don’t need to spent a lot on these, a 10 minutes of massage with our traditional coconut, almond or olive oil can help your hair gain all the benefits too.

    1. Ya, dandruff is a result of an oily scalp as opposed to the popular belief (I used to believe it too up until 3 years ago :P).
Dandruff is caused when the yeast on our scalp become hyperactive and start eating up our sebum (oil). The more the sebum, the happier they are 😛
Dry scalp and dandruff are not the same.

  1. I love oiling my hair once a week with coconut oil + castor oil. It makes my hair very shiny and healthy. I liked reading it Tanya. 🙂
