Benefits of Rice Water for Skin and Hair

By Deepika S.V.

Hello Beautiful Ladies,

Beauty remedies always start in our kitchens! There are times wherein a very costly product is  no match to home made beauty treatments. And you do find more than one benefit in anything that comes out of your kitchen. So here I am writing on one such staple food that works wonders for  your hair and skin. Rice Water! This came in as a surprise to me. I was not sure if it does any magic but I wanted to try it to see if it does anything to my skin and hair.

Rice water that I speak about is not the water you get after you have washed the rice, but the water that is left over by boiling the rice. At my home, we always use the pressure cooker so there is no water residue, but after marriage into a Bengali family, I saw they prepared rice in a different way by straining out the excess water after it was perfectly done! Most of the times I used to feel that they are wasting the water and that is what made me to look at how it can be used for and to my surprise I saw a lot of uses. And it has been a part of my beauty regime since then; and with confidence I can tell you that it does work. So read on to know how you can use it and how it helps you!

Method to get the rice water:

While boiling rice, add in more water than required. When the rice is cooked, strain the excess water into a tumbler and let it cool. Allow it to ferment overnight as it gets richer in antioxidants, minerals, vitamin E. It looks something like below:

Uses for hair:

Rice water has inositol, a carbohydrate that can repair damaged hair. It can strengthen the roots, make it smooth and silky. It also controls hair fall to a certain extent.
How to use it:
• You can add few drops of essential oils like rosemary, lavender or tea tree oil for extra benefits to the rice water. After shampooing, pour the rice water over your hair and gently massage it and leave it for 4-5 mins and rinse off with luke warm or cold water. But use the rinse only once or twice a week.
• You can add rice water to any of the hair packs for extra benefits.

Effects:

After 3-4 weeks, you can clearly see that your hairfall would be in control. Hair gets stronger and manageable.

Uses for skin:

• Keep the rice water in refrigerator for 2-3 hours and let it cool. You can use the cooled rice water as a toner or to rinse your face once a day ( I do it at night as a part of my regime) But it does make your skin dry so for those who have dry skin make sure you do not follow it every day!
• Gram Flour+Rice water+Turmeric+ Few drops of lemon can be used as a body pack for beautiful skin.
• Dab cotton in rice flour and gently rub it on your body and take a warm or a cold shower post 20-30 minutes. It reduces the tan.
• Use it around your eye for reducing wrinkles.
• Use it in any of the face packs.

Effects:

  • Inositol present in rice water helps promote cell growth and slows down the aging process.
  • It minimizes the pores.
  • Makes the skin firmer and softens it.
  • Reduces  age spots and lightens skin tone.

So here were the very few ways I use rice water in my beauty regime. You can always experiment with different ingredients in your kitchen and team it up with rice water. Make sure you do not use the stored rice water for more than a week.
Dry skinned beauties make sure you use it in minimum as it tends to dry your skin more. It is a magical boon specially crafted for the oily-skinned ladies!
So go ahead and prepare your rice water and experiment! And if you have any new way that works, do not ever forget to let me know!

  1. Ohh…my mom used to cook rice this way and use this water for her cotton sateen to make it all crisp and fresh! I am thinking how to lay my hands on this now! 🙂

  2. i have this water almost every day at my home and i do nothing about it. 😐 Totally going to put it for good use from now on. Thanks for sharing. Super tips!!! 🙂

  3. My mom used to make shikakai paste using this rice water during my school days..this has been the tradition of washing hair in my native..

  4. Hii Deepika,

Being a South Indian, we are used to boiling rice the way you have mentioned above. I remember my mum applying the residue (kanji) on to our scalp during summers because that is known to have cooling effect. Needless to say, shampoos and conditioners have replaced shikakai and rice water. But it’s always good to go back to nature when it has so much to offer

  5. Hey deepika i have a question to ask.
I got permanent hair straightening done and after 2-3 days my hair started fall off alot. How its been a year and half of my hair is wayy shorter in lenght compared to other. Is there anything i can do to recover from the damage and for a fast hair growth.
