Eczema or dermatitis is the inflammation of skin owing to various factors like allergy to products, dust mites etc. It causes flaking and drying of skin which can get itchy, swollen and red. Steroid creams are prescribed to control the symptoms. But, in the long run, it is better to control it gradually rather than going for these creams every time.
I have been having bouts of eczema for the last 9 years or so. After a lot of steroid creams prescribed by the doctors, I have finally got a hang of keeping eczema under control. Here is a skin care regimen you can follow for your eczema prone dry skin:
Harsh surfactants can aggravate the flakiness and dryness and so, it is best to opt for extremely mild cleansers. Being soap free, following cleansers are extremely mild and they moisturise as they clean:
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser
Moisturise! Moisturise! Moisturise! Moisturizing is one of the most important steps to deal with eczema. Cerave Facial Moisturizing Lotion is one of the best moisturizers and is extremely effective. Cetaphil Moisturising Lotion is also very good.
Eucerin Aquaphor Healing Ointment provides soothing, calming relief. It heals the skin, restores moisture and repairs the aggravated skin. It also heals the raw sensitive skin caused due to itching.
When you do get bad symptoms, instead of grabbing a steroid cream, go for Aveeno Calamine & Pramoxine HCL Anti-Itch Cream. Steroid creams are of no good in the long run.
In general, these are the best brands for most of the products – Cetaphil, Aveeno, Eucerin and Cerave.
Avoid products with retinol, Vitamin C, alpha hydroxy or salicylic acids, as these can aggravate eczema.
