Black Opal Invisible Oil Blocking Loose Powder Review

Hello friends!

Hope all of you are enjoying your days! Today, I am excited to share my new find with you all which seem quite popular in Europe, Africa and US markets. And, without playing the guessing game, I would disclose the name ‘Black Opal’. I see that the brand is dedicated to women of color across the world and no wonder the products enhance the natural beauty of women in their own comfort zone. I would soon try their skincare range, but before that, I wanted to test the brand through its makeup and that’s when I picked up this Invisible Oil Blocking Loose Powder. I am glad I started with the loose powder as it certainly has boosted my confidence to move ahead with Black Opal, though I am not sure if I would repurchase it. So, let’s start with my review for Black opal Invisible oil Blocking Loose Powder in shade: 02 Invisible!

About the Brand:
Black opal was launched in 1994 by three creative forces. The founders, a Jamaican muse who embodied the consumer, a chemist with expertise in product formulation and a brilliant dermatologist combined their skills to form an affordable range of cosmetic products that target specific needs. After a successful skincare range, the brand moved on to create color cosmetics, and has since enjoyed success with both lines across the States, Europe and Africa.

My Experience with Black Opal Invisible Oil Blocking Loose Powder:

Black Opal matte finish powder is also available in pressed form which would be my next target, hopefully! 😉 First of all, I am quite fascinated by their eye candy packaging. It is a sleek and sturdy black tub jar with a screw on lid/cap. But, it has no applicator and/or mirror. I wish they had at least incorporated a sponge, after all even L’Oreal gives sponge applicators with every loose powder! Anyway, I know we can easily forget these small cons provided the product fulfills our expectations which it actually does up to good extent, not completely for me though.

The texture of the powder is silky soft, as they say, while it looks like colored foundation powder in tub packaging. It does not makes me look darker or fairer in any sense, just removes excess shine off my face without altering with natural skin tone or imperfections.

I do feel it tends to sit on top of my skin and is slightly tricky to blend with a sponge applicator. However, my Sephora Collection Classic Mineral Powder Brush #45 blends it seamlessly with no chalky feel at all. Yes, I would like to give credits to my makeup tools before complimenting the powder. Take it as a precautionary measure to always use dome shaped powder brushes while working with this powder as such brushes will give much better results and finish on skin!

Well, when used with a brush, it gives perfect matte finish to my bare skin. But, it only stays for 4-6 hours even when the weather conditions are not too hot here. To be honest, I think that it works pretty well for touch ups and is great as a setting powder over my makeup, but using it alone on skin seems tricky for my oily skin due to its limited staying power. Plus, it sometimes makes my skin crave for moisture.

I must confess that after using Urban Decay ‘Naked Skin’ Ultra Definition Loose Finishing Powder, I have become over demanding and probably, I am over expecting with this product. I mean, it works well on my oily skin – it didn’t settle in my pores or laugh lines and didn’t broke me out either. But, somehow, I feel something is missing to make it perfect for oily skin; maybe it’s the limited staying power or maybe I miss that flawless even skin tone as it does not blur skin imperfections.

It does nothing to improve the skin. I agree it does not settle into the fine lines, but it won’t hide the skin imperfections of ageing beauties. However, I should certainly not compare it to my Urban Decay loose powder, after all price does matter and for 8-9 bucks, this one delivers pretty good results.

I would only recommend it to youthful glowing beauties with extremely oily skin, irrespective of their skin tone. It will definitely work well on your skin type, others might need to skip it especially beauties above 30! Personally, I like it for its decent qualities, but I am more than happy with my Urban Decay powder, to be frank!

Let’s sum up pros and cons:

Pros of Black Opal Invisible Oil Blocking Loose Powder:

• A lightweight loose powder for oily skin that gives shine free, matte skin.
• Absorbs oil off face to give matte skin for decent hours without drying our skin.
• Does not accentuate open pores or acne prone skin, thankfully.
• Works great over makeup as a setting powder as well as for touch ups because it keeps shine at bay.
• Does not alter the natural skin tone or foundation shade.
• Does not look chalky or flaky on our skin when used with a dome shaped powder brush with gentle strokes.
• Quite user friendly and travel friendly, plus classy packaging.

Cons of Black Opal Invisible Oil Blocking Loose Powder:

• I wish it came with an applicator.
• It is only workable with dome shaped brush for me, and not with sponge/puff applicators.
• I miss the dewy glow on my skin after using this powder.
• I fear it might accentuate our laugh lines and the signs of ageing with multiple swipes.
• Limited staying power.
• Presence of parabens, silica might be bothersome for sensitive skin types.

IMBB Rating:
3.8/5

Conclusion:
Well, leaving aside most of the cons, I am more serious about its limited usage on my skin. I like the fresh, dewy look on my face which usually makes our skin look well rested, hydrated and youthful. But, with this powder, I look like a dry prairie land. 😛 However, I cannot deny the point that it works better than most of the other drugstore powders available in the market.

  1. I like how this brand offers products for women of color. I have dry to normal skin, so I usually don’t require oil control powders.
