Yet another Bobbi Brown review for you today. I am enjoying doing lipstick reviews again – the colourful lipsticks are so much more fun than any other makeup product, no? Today’s review is on the shade “Cali Rose” from the Crushed Lip Color line. Let us dig into this one.

My Experience with Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color Cali Rose:

Packaging: The brand kept the packaging in line with the Bobbi Brown aesthetics by doing a cuboid back casing and yet gave it a fun and efficient twist. Each of the lipsticks has a colour-coded band which extends to the lipstick tube itself.

The colour of the band corresponds to the colour of the lipstick inside. So, if you have more than one of these, it’s easy to identify the shade from the packaging itself – plus it looks more fun and vibrant.

The lipstick bullet is a regular twist-up with the cap clicking soundly into place. The lipstick bullet is indented which allows better precision in application. It comes packaged in the usual black cardboard box.

Shade: If Bobbi Brown releases a “Rose” shade, I must have it! Most Rose shades in the market are the dusty rose types. Whereas Bobbi’s Rose shades are generally bright pinks with a hint of purple. Whether it was “Rose Blossom” from her Rich Lip color line or “Hot Rose” from her Luxe Lip Color range – Bobbi Brown Rose shades are always flattering.

The shade, Cali Rose is described by the company as a “med tone True Rose.” The shade is a medium, bright, slightly cool-toned, rose pink with a hint of purple/mauve in it. It is an effortless shade which looks very flattering and would suit most skin tones. Applied lightly – it can be used for a “no makeup look” because it makes your lips look a healthy pink – like they are naturally pink. Built up, the shade looks very becoming!

Texture: The formula of the lipstick is consistent with the other shades like Angel, Lilac, etc. The lipstick has a lip balm like texture which allows it to glide on effortlessly, but does not have too move slip where it would slide out of the lip line either. It deposits pigment evenly. It is almost like a lip balm with buildable pigmentation. It has a lightweight texture and it is moisturizing and definitely hydrating. The lips look youthful.

What is most remarkable about the lipstick is that the texture does not build up even when the pigment does. Meaning, normally if a lipstick is not too pigmented, we build the colour by adding more swipes. However, as we add more swipes, we also end up depositing more product which adds texture to the lips and if the lipstick has a cream/satin texture, the product would end up sliding around on the lips. However, that does not happen with this lipstick. I assume it is because the texture is so lightweight. Being the texture it is, it will transfer to other surfaces on contact.

Pigmentation: Since the shade is so bright, even with a single swipe, you get substantial colour on your lips – like a blotted down stained look. The colour can be easily built up – this means about 5-6 swipes at least. My lip swatches and FOTDs are with built up colours so that you can appreciate the difference between the different shades in the line. However, I have shared arm swatches where one side is a single swipe of the lipstick and the other side is with multiple swipes. This will enable you to understand how low the pigmentation is and how richly it can be built up.

Lasting Power: Even when used as a single swipe, this shade gives a couple of hours of wear. With multiple swipes, and the colour at full intensity, this shade gives me about 5-5.5 hours of wear and leaves a light stain. It does wear off evenly and does not get patchy. My lips feel better and thanks to the hydration provided by the lipstick.

Fragrance: There is a slight fragrance but nothing too discernible unless you put your nose to it.

Do I Recommend Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color Cali Rose?
I am partial to Bobbi Brown Rose shades! She does make the most amazing shades – they never look garish or painted on. This shade in particular is so pretty – whether used lightly or built up. I have been partial to her shade “Rose Blossom” for years and this looks like a pretty variation of the same! I love it and do recommend it – Highly!!
