Bobbi Brown Skin Weightless Powder Foundation Review

Hello Lovely Ladies,

Today’s review is on another new powder foundation from my stash. This one is from the much-loved brand – Bobbi Brown! No, I haven’t gone mad and gone on a spree of buying powder foundations! This one is actually not mine but my sister’s and she was really sweet to let me test drive this. I was super intrigued by this product because she purchased it just around the same time when I purchased my Guerlain Lingerie de Peau Powder Foundation. So, let’s find out more about this foundation.

My Experience with Bobbi Brown Skin Weightless Powder Foundation:

Packaging:  Bobbi Brown’s packaging is generally a “no-fuss” straightforward packaging except when she comes up with her limited edition stuff, which is more fun or uber cool. The compact is similar to the compact of Guerlain Lingerie the Peau foundation that I reviewed a couple of days back, in essence. There is a sleek black compact with a very slight heft, has a separate tray on the side for the placement of the accompanying sponge. There is a decent-sized good quality mirror. And the entire compact comes housed in the typical Bobbi brown black cardboard packaging.

I can’t help comparing the compact with that of Guerlain:

1. Please note that the pricing of this one is cheaper than the one from Guerlain, but just marginally so.
2. The Bobbi Brown one does not seem to to be a refillable one, so it’s pricier in the long run.
3. The Guerlain one comes with a suede velvet sleeve – adding to the luxurious feel of the product. Bobbi Brown compact is sans any such frills.
4. The Guerlain compact is glossy with beautiful curves. The Bobbi Brown one looks more straightforward with more angular lines, so Guerlain kind of wins in the aesthetics category.
5. The tray for the sponge seems to be the only distinct difference between the two packaging. In the Bobbi Brown compact, the sponge tray is perforated at the bottom and this allows for flow of air to the sponge, which is not the case with the Guerlain compact.

I will try to ensure that the review of the product is limited to the product and doesn’t really become just a comparative post between Bobbi Brown and Guerlain. But honestly, the products are extremely similar and if you are on the lookout for a similar product, I want you to make an informed decision.

The Shade Range: The powder foundation comes in 20 shades, which is a fairly decent range covering a whole spectrum of skin tones. It may not match upto MAC’s shade range but it definitely beats the pants off most other brands.

Also, Bobbi’s foundations are known to be yellow toned, which is great news for the girls with Asian skin tone. Bobbi believes that irrespective of the skin tone, the foundation should be slightly yellow toned. While many of the Caucasian beauties may not agree to that, there are an equal number of girls who do! And as far as us, desi girls – it’s an absolute winner.

The shade that I have shared in pics is 4.5 – which is my sister’s shade. Generally, mine is 4. 1’, NC30 in MAC. That’s the other thing about Bobbi’s foundations – apparently, you can move from any type of foundation to the other, your shade number stays the same. You don’t need to go to the store and get yourself matched again just because you are trying a new foundation from her line.

Texture: Just like the Guerlain foundation, this one too is extremely finely milled, super smooth and almost creamy in texture. it goes onto the skin smoothly and melts in as second skin. It does not look caked on or patchy. It’s oil free, so definitely great for oily-skinned girls. Considering how cashmere-like texture it has, I would say that it would work well even for a dry skinned person as long as they ensure that their skin is properly moisturised before going in with this.

Coverage: The Company has been extremely clear about the coverage – stating upfront that it will hide imperfections, etc., but is sheer coverage. So, it will basically give a smooth canvas to work on for someone who has decent skin. If you have distinct discolouration, acne scars, etc, this foundation will not give ou apt cover on its own, you will need to use a concealer. Also, the coverage will depend on what tool you use to apply it. The sponge enclosed in the compact will give a bit more coverage. A fluffy powder brush like the Estee Lauder Powder brush will give very sheer coverage. And a dense brush – like a Real Techniques Expert Face Brush will again give a bit more coverage.

The Company has marketed the product clearly stating that its coverage is sheer, which is something I appreciate. And they also mention that it works great for setting up the makeup, which again is true. Normally, we reach for a loose powder for this purpose because chances of it looking cakey are less. This powder foundation has such gorgeously light texture, that it works perfectly for setting up the makeup too.

Also, as mentioned in my Guerlain Lingerie de Peau powder foundation review, you can use this Bobbi Brown Powder Foundation also for the buffing technique. It works wonderfully for that too.

Longevity: Longevity is decent, about 6 hours, post which you will need to go in for a touch ip. It works really well for setting makeup and for buffing technique.

Finish: The product has a lovely skin-like finish – even though it mattifies the skin.

Pros of Bobbi Brown Skin Weightless Powder Foundation:

  • Aesthetically appealing and functional packaging.
  • Powder is finely milled and smooth to touch.
  • Gives sheer to medium coverage depending on the applicator being used.
  • Mattifies the skin without making it look dead or caked on.
  • Skin looks and feels like skin – there is no discernible layer of powder on it.
  • Works well on its own, over a liquid foundation to set and add coverage and also for buffing.
  • Does not sink into fine lines.

Cons of Bobbi Brown Skin Weightless Powder Foundation:

  • I’m being picky, but I wish this too was refillable.

IMBB Rating:
4.5/5

I feel that powders and powder foundations today have really come a long way from the earlier times of cakey makeup. Newer technology and newer ingredients have added a lot of joy to powder products. For someone who has oily skin – these are a great choice – from the functionality as well as portability perspective, but I feel that they make a great choice option, even for normal to maybe dry skinned girls.

Would I Recommend/Repurchase Bobbi Brown Skin Weightless Powder Foundation?
Absolutely, if you are on the lookout for a powder foundation, absolutely. So, which one between the Guerlain and the Bobbi Brown would I repurchase and recommend. Honestly, it’s a toss up. I prefer the Guerlain one because that is the one I have!! 😉 Also, I think the fact that the compact is refillable and aesthetically more appealing, it adds to the product for me, but the bottom line obviously is shade match which can be a pain in Guerlain foundations and an absolute dream in Bobbi Brown ones!
