Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil Review

Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil Review

Product Purchased by IMBB

I fell in love with cleansing oils when IMBB sponsored the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil for me earlier.  Suddenly, stripping off the makeup from my face at end of day didn’t seem like a chore anymore. Instead, it was enjoyment. So, when my Shu Uemura bottle was at its last leg, I was on the look out for a fresh bottle – but since Shu is not available in India and I got an opportunity to try a new product, I thought why not.  So, here I review for you the Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil.  I had shared details of what a cleansing oil is, while reviewing the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil, so I will straight away jump into the review here.

Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil

Product Details:

Luxury meets simplicity – Bobbi’s Soothing Cleansing Oil is a quick yet luxurious way to cleanse skin. Made with soothing jasmine flower extract (sourced directly from France), moisturizing kukui nut oil, and a blend of Italian olive, organic sunflower and jojoba oils to dissolve surface impurities and makeup without leaving skin feeling tight or dry. Can be used in the morning to wake up and refresh skin, or at night as a soothing end to a long day.

Soothing Cleansing Oil Tip:

For centuries, the aromatic jasmine flower has been coveted around the world for its therapeutic benefits. Jasmine is harvested at night when it produces the most oils. It is featured in Soothing Cleansing Oil to soothe skin and help reduce the appearance of redness and irritation.

Packaging:

It comes in a transparent plastic bottle with a pump which can be locked by twisting it. My Experience with Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil:

I love using cleansing oil at the end of the day to strip off my face of all makeup.  It’s such an easy way to achieve clean, healthy skin and it’s a pleasure to do so. I will share my experience with the product and also compare it to the iconic Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil.

The oil is a transparent runny liquid. You need to apply it to dry skin (meaning application and not skin type – “dry” as in “not-wet”). I pump the product onto my palm. I rub the product onto my face and neck, in parts, including eye area and lips. You need about four pumps for the full face and neck.

The first time I applied it, I didn’t feel any sting in the eyes. The second time round, my eyes did sting, which I later realized was due to my waterproof mascara and not because of the oil.

The product dissolves all makeup, dirt, grime, excess sebum from the face and neck. Once the makeup is dissolved, splash water on your face and neck. Since the cleansing oil is water soluble, it (along with the makeup, grime, dirt and sebum) will create an emulsion and will get washed away. The product turns milky on mixing with water. You continue rinsing and the product is wiped away.  Dry the skin with towel. The skin feels soft and supple. There is no tightness of skin. There is no residue of the oil on the face, no feeling of oiliness, stickiness or “something is there and needs to be wiped” feeling. You do not need to cleanse your face with a cleanser post using the cleansing oil, nor do you need to moisturize – since the cleansing oil takes care of both these aspects. People with dry skin will love the moisturization it provides and people with oily/combination skin will love the feeling of freshness thanks to the removal of sebum from skin surface.

Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil

I have been using this on my face since the last 2 weeks and absolutely loving the feel of it. My skin feels nourished, soft and supple. There has been no dry patches, no redness or irritation of any sort.

In the pics, I have demonstrated the product on my arm (instead of the face) using long-wear makeup products and waterproof mascara! All makeup, including long wear foundation and lipsticks easily dissolve into the oil. However, the waterproof mascara was a toughie – the oil was unable to dissolve it completely.

The product has a fragrance – not too strong or off-putting – you feel it only once you pump out the product. It dissipates fairly quickly.

A quick comparison between this and the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil.

  • The Shu Uemura cleansing oil is easier to emulsify, it immediately starts breaking down on contact with water. This one takes a couple of seconds longer. For someone using cleansing oil for the first time, will not feel the difference of course.  It is only because I have tried the Shu Uemura one one that I know the difference.
  • Shu Uemura oil breaks down even waterproof mascara. This is not a deal breaker for me because I rarely use waterproof variety of mascara.
  • Bobbi Brown cleansing oil is easier on the pocket than the Shu Uemura one and equally good.

Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil

To sum this up for you:

Pros of Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil:

  • Will work well for all skin tones.
  • Removes makeup extremely effectively including long wear products except for waterproof mascara.
  • Does not cause the skin to feel tight, like some harsh cleansers do.
  • Leaves no residue or stickiness on the face.
  • I feel the skin becoming radiant with regular use.
  • Did not cause any skin irritation or breakouts.
  • Easy to dispense and apply – bottle has a pump.
  • Easy to store and carry, the pump can be locked by twisting the nozzle.

Cons of Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil:

  • It has fragrance, may not be liked by people who prefer their skin care to be fragrance free.
  • Does not work effectively on waterproof mascara.

IMBB Rating:

4.5/5 product.

It’s an absolutely fantastic product and I love how it makes my skin feel and look. I love how it is a multi-tasker – it’s a makeup remover, moisturizer and skin nourisher in one. While the Shu Uemura one is a perfect 5/5, it definitely is the best out there, but I feel the Bobbi Brown one is a close runner up and at a better price point. If you haven’t tried a cleansing oil before, do give them a shot – absolutely fab product – you will be hooked. I tried cleansing oil from one more brand, I bought it during my last trip, review coming up soon!

  1. Nice review kk, i am thinking to buy shu uemera cleansing oil this month, but seeing one more cleansing oil, i thought this is better than previous, but now decided shu uemera is best *happy dance* , because i use waterproof mascara daily, and compared both of them nicely *hifive* , one can easily decide which to buy *hifive* , and now a days i see less review from u, I have one doubt, Did u use DHC cleansing oil? is shu uemera is better than DHC?

  2. Thanks Sravanthi! I have been busy managing kids with their summer vacations on…plus went for a small trip last week. And currently at my mom’s place where network is pathetic! Anyways! I’m afraid I haven’t tried the dhc cleansing oil. But Shu is pretty amazing, especially if you use waterproof mascara daily!

  6. Nice too see it compared with Shu Uemura’s cleansing oil…they’re both so pricey but am glad to know they’re both effective. 🙂

    1. Thanks Rati! You should definitely try them…. It would be great to have your perspective on it since your skin type is different…

  7. Love the concept of cleansing oils. You’ve used all the right words too – soft, supple *whistle* . Ok so are there any others in the market but in the not so expensive range? *duh*

  8. Me too! Love the concept of cleansing oils n am totally hooked. Unfortunately, they do seem to come with a hefty price tag. I recently picked a not so expensive one… Will update you all on its efficacy soon… Once I’ve given it a full test run
