The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil Review

The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil Review

I had my eye on this oil for quite some time before I purchased it. I was facing a problem with pimples which had surfaced for the first time in my 24th year. I was doing extensive research online and found tea tree oil to be god-like in pimple treatment and blemish control. In India, I found that only Body Shop was offering tea tree oil and did not find it anywhere else the way you find olive oil for instance. I was reluctant to pay so much for a small bottle but decided to bite the bullet and pick it up.

Here is what Body Shop says to describe it: A medicine cabinet must. A pre-blended oil which can be used in many different ways to help soothe blemished skin. Dab directly onto skin at first sign of a blemish.

Ingredients mentioned on the website: Water, Alcohol Denat., PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Polysorbate 20, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Limonene, t-Butyl Alcohol, Calophyllum Inophyllum Seed Oil, Citral, Leptospermum Petersonii (Lemon Tea Tree) Oil, Denatonium Benzoate, Tocopherol.

The ingredients on the bottle mentioned: 15% tea tree oil. I believe that is the reason it is safe to simply dab on your face as pure tea tree oil is too strong to put on the face directly.

The quantity is 0.33fl oz and costs Rs.445.

My experience with the product and how I used it: I was very excited to buy this little guy and put my faith in it. I put it on a couple of pimples I had. Just dabbed it on my clean forefinger and pressed it against the pimple such that it will absorb it. It stung like lemon juice stings. But I am ready to undergo a lot of pains for my skin, so didnโ€™t mind it.

I found that it hurt more and worked less. I used it a couple of times a day and at night, I mixed it with olive oil and applied on my face. It worked on the pimple like a lazy school kid does his/her homework-sluggishly. Though it did help in subduing the pimple, I found that the Body Shop tea tree mask does a better job, without stinging at all. However, you canโ€™t apply the mask and go around with green spots on your face so I guess this is where the oil comes in the picture.

I also found that if a pimple is emerging and you apply this oil, the pimple becomes very small but still remains on the skin. And the worst part is that when they subside, they leave marks! How evil is that. So basically, I find this product a hogwash. The fact that no other brand is offering tea tree oil in its oil form, ensures that Body Shop is able to sell this stupid product.

Pros of The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil:
1. Does not let a pimple form completely and helps it go back into the skin.
2. Lasts a reasonably long time. I had very low expectations since the quantity is so less.

Cons of The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil:
1. It stings a lot.
2. Does nothing for the scars.
3. Its method of treating an emerging pimple is very superficial. While it ensure that a pimple does not come out completely in that area, it does not kill the bacteria as a result of which a pimple starts emerging somewhere else on the face. I donโ€™t know if it is peculiar to this product only or if it happens with all tea tree oil products of body shop/other company.
4. It costs a lot Rs 445 for such less quantity.
5. It doesnโ€™t do anything for blackheads.

I have considered using other products from the tea tree range apart from the mask and oil, but the number of chemicals in the ingredients lists scares me off.

Rating for the product: 2.5 stars

Would I buy it again? No

  1. hey shivani.. Good review.. I too bought this last yr n faced the same stinging sensation as u.. I did nothing for my pimples.. Been sitting in my cupboard since then.. N occupying unnecessary space :spank:

  2. Sivani oriflame also has tea tree oil, it doesnt sting at all but works okayinsh on the pimples, nothing remarkable about that too. :methinks:

  3. Thanks Shivani for the review…u saved me!! I wanted to buy something from this range to get rid of zits which keep coming on my face here n there..But now i wud hunt for something more effective!!

  4. I have the face mask and coincidentally have applied right now ๐Ÿ™‚ Face mask works grt for me..its really good :waytogo: thanks for the review I too have been tempted to buy this but will wont now :thanks:

  5. It is better not to use tea tree in its pure form cos full strength tea tree oil may cause skin irritation even in people who are not allergic to the oil. And you do get tea tree oil in many brands for e.g aroma magic and few more i have seen at Beauty palace in Mumbai…

  6. good review shivani…. …its sad that such a pricey product didnt work for u…..try the pure tea tree oil & mix it with coconut or olive oil as carrier…may be it might work…n ther are other brands selling tea-tree oil…do check out…you might get it t bomby store also….. :))

  7. I have this…never used because couldnt get stupid bottle to open. I called up the store asking them how to open it…seems like some child-lock mechanism ๐Ÿ™ Anyways is lying somewhere now ๐Ÿ™ I don’t like their tea tree mask..and don’t intend trying out any other product from their tea-tree range either..but that said, since tea tree is more of an antiseptic kinds..I don’t think it would work for blackheads…..it’s like a spot treatment naaa..so would only work where you apply it..not on other parts of the face or prevent a pimple or anything like that. Or at least that’s what I thought ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Hey Radhika… good for you the bottle didn’t open ๐Ÿ˜€
btw i think to expect it to work on blackhead is fair too cuz a blackhead comes in the purview of the umbrella category of ‘blemishes.’ so for the toughie bhs, this stuff should ideally work.

  8. hey i used both TBS and Oriflame tree tea oil .TBS’s was kind of thick and oriflame’s is lighter in consistency..I can say tea tree oil was complete failure for me.Infact the TBS’s version was oily enough to clog my pores and give me new pimples.

I have acne from 10 years and its a ongoing struggle to make it go.As you never had pimples before ,try to find the changes in your life style .You might get to know the root cause of this issue.and last but not least drink lots of water. ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Thanks a lot for doing the review! :thanks: I just started using the tea tree face wash and toner and quite liked it (this toner is extremely drying, but I’ve oily skin so its ok) and was planning to buy the mask and oil for spot treatment because I wasnt happy with lush’s grease lightning! :nababana:

  10. what a waste of 450 bucks! Thanks fr reviewing Shivani…I’ve always been very tempted to buy this. I did like the night lotion and day cream from this range though. Benzoyl peroxide ointment works fine for me on pimples- and it costs only Rs 100 approx!

  11. i think u can try the Aroma magic one.. they too have a oil for clearing pimples n also the marks after tht.. i hav used it n it works well :waytogo: :waytogo: .. it was 250/- around when i bought it so its cheaper too, shivani..

      1.   i think its lesser than 250 even.. similar sized bottle.. do chk it if u find anywhere..

  12. hi..i have found Vit E capsules to be very effective for pimples. I mean Vit E is good for on spot reduction. healed my embarassing pimple which was right at the tip of my nose ๐Ÿ™ I have also started using it for my dark circles. but having said that I use the Body shop tea tree blackheads remover scrub and thats very good.

sorry this didnt work for you.

  13. i found the whole tea tree range bakwass :struggle: :struggle: :struggle: :wilt: :wilt: :zombiekiller: :zombiekiller:

  14. Hi Shivani… nice review…
thogh i rarely have pimples… but my home remedy for emerging pimple is i press an ice cube whenevr i see a pimple emerging… it either sibsides completely or even it if comes it, it comes out really small and thus, heals quickly ๐Ÿ™‚
you may try this, hope this helps ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. I use a few drops of this oil with my regular almond oil for hair. Works great for Dandruff and dry scalp. All of you who have the bottle put away in your cabinets might want to try this. Would be great to know how it works for you..

  16. I walked into TBS to look for a fragrance, and they handed me this as a sample after my purchase. I used it, because I have awful blemishes on my cheeks, which can’t be covered with make up. Sigh. Anyway, I used it for two days, and the minor blemishes disappeared on one cheek. I am contemplating about buying this product (price issues). If you guys are still not sure, go to TBS and ask for a sample! It surely helped me, and the sample is good to last for 5-7 days.
