Boots Botanics Ultra Calm Gentle Cleansing Cream Review

Hola Amigos,

Being makeup lovers, we know applying makeup gives us happiness and confidence and of course enhance our features, but removing makeup is equally important. I normally use almond, olive oil or baby oil (whichever is handy) to remove my makeup. It removes makeup efficiently and also gives much-needed moisture to my super dry and sensitive skin, but having a cleanser in the stash, for this specific purpose, is not a bad idea either. 😉 So, on my recent trip to my local Target, I picked up Boots Botanics Ultra Calm Gentle Cleansing Cream. The “Ultra Calm” claim attracted me towards it as I have very sensitive skin. Let us see how it performed.

My Experience with Boots Botanics Ultra Calm Gentle Cleansing Cream:

Boots Botanics Ultra Calm Gentle cleansing cream comes in a white bottle with a flip open cap. The cap closes securely with a click, so I believe it would stay intact when taken on short trips. The bottle is opaque hence we won’t be able to see how much of the product is left in the bottle, but the cap can be unscrewed and the remaining product could be used easily.

The cleanser smells really good, the fragrance is slightly herbal and flowery. It really calms your senses. 😉 Also, the cleanser does have olive oil and almond oil in the ingredients which are good for dry skin. The calming marshmallow too attracted me towards itself. 😉 Doesn’t it sound yummy. 😛

I rub/massage it gently onto my dry skin and let it stay on my skin for a few seconds before removing it with a cotton pad. It removes BB cream and light makeup easily, but removing heavy or long wearing makeup needs a little more effort. I normally don’t wear heavy makeup, so this cleanser is fine for me, but when I tried removing my long-wearing make-up using this, I had to go over a couple of times with the cleanser and cotton pad, which my skin didn’t like. 🙁

It didn’t dry my skin out, but did leave a slight residue on my face. I was not satisfied with the cleansing it did, so again I cleaned my face with Neutrogena Hydrating Makeup Remover Wipes to be doubly sure. It does not break me out and does provide moisture to my dry skin.

In the swatch, I applied Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation, MAC Pro Long Wear Concealer, a couple of other concealers, lipsticks and eyeliner. I rubbed the cleanser and let it stay on my arm for a few seconds before wiping it off. You can see, it removed most of the stuff in a couple of swipes, but the long-wearing stuff (EL double wear foundation and MAC prolongwear concealer) took multiple swipes, but still were not removed properly. But then, this was my arm and I could rub it a bit hard which I obviously can’t do on my face. It did not remove lipsticks and eyeliner, but then, it is not supposed to be used as an eye makeup remover.

But now comes the bad part, oh yeah…really bad one! The first time that I had used it on my face, it started to tingle as soon as I applied it. With rubbing and cleaning up with cotton pad, my face started burning. I ran to wash my face and the burning died away soon. Thankfully, no breakouts or rashes!!! Well, I was really scared, but thought that it might be because of my first time use. Next time I used it, it didn’t burn much, but yes, the tingling sensation was still there and I was not really comfortable with it. Now, with more regular usage, it doesn’t burn, but the tingling is still there and not in a good way, so I really think twice before using it. Not sure what does the brand means by “ultra calm, for sensitive skin.” 🙁

Pros of Boots Botanics Ultra Calm Gentle Cleansing Cream:

  • Sturdy packaging.
  • Smells nice.
  • Very moisturizing.
  • Did not break me out.

Cons of Boots Botanics Ultra Calm Gentle Cleansing Cream:

  • Leaves a slight residue on the face.
  • Does not give that “clean” feeling.
  • Removes light makeup well, will have to repeat multiple times for heavy/long-wearing makeup.
  • Tingles as soon as applied, in a very uneasy way.
  • My face had a burning sensation with the first few uses.
  • Cannot be used to remove eye makeup.
  • Doesn’t remove lip makeup properly.

Would I Repurchase Boots Botanics Ultra Calm Gentle Cleansing Cream?
Well no, I am more comfortable using oils as cleanser. Plus, I was lucky it didn’t break out my sensitive skin, but I am not keen on continuing using it. But then, everyone has different skin types and what did not work for me, may work for you. I would not repurchase it, but I would recommend it to girls who don’t have very sensitive skin and use light makeup.

  1. Bakuli, if you have to rub it so much on the face, it’s not suitable for sensitive skin like mine. What’s that teal blue eyeliner?

    1. True Jomo. They should not advertise it as suitable for sensitive skin. Teal blue one is an old Lakme eye-liner that I have. I don’t use it on my eyes anymore, just unable throw it away. 😛
