What Bourjois advertises about the product:

A shade for every outfit and style.  Stylish and sleek in design, it is the perfect fashion accessory for that trendsetting smile!

I don’t really get what the claims mean – in terms of “Tested and approved by Fashion Editors.” Did Vogue put their seal of approval on this one? No idea!

10 hour hydration? Well, read on to find out if that is true.

Packaging:

As I mentioned in my previous review of Bourjois Rouge Edition – #17 Rose Millesime, I love the packaging of these lipsticks. It is so eye-catching and my eye was definitely caught! Yes, it is a copy…sorry….they look “inspired” by Estee Lauder Pure Color Collection. But honestly, “nakal ke liye bhi akal ki zaroorat hoti hai,” and Bourjois has done a fabulous jab with the square black body packaging with clear glass bottom which showcases the color of the particular lipstick.  It also is practical to identify shade, in case, like me, you have more than one of these babies.

The overall appearance of the product is extremely plush and is probably one of the best drugstore packaging available currently!
The cap secures nicely with a click and is definitely not going to come askrew accidently in your bag! So, go ahead and throw it in your bag. Come on ladies, I am kidding! Show some respect – don’t just throw it! At this price, I recommend you not to throw it!!

Coming to the price:

Price:

INR 955 for 3.5 gm.

Yes, you read that right!! Its INR 955!!!!!!!!!!! Random thoughts in mind:

  • Are you kidding me??!!!
  • But, I just bought one 4 days back at INR 775!
  • Won’t I put in 35 bucks and buy a MAC instead?
  • And I still bought it! What was I thinking??!!

Actually, I wasn’t thinking! Meaning, I just paid for the lipstick along with the rest of my shopping from Lifestyle and only later did I realize the price had gone up! Hmmmmpf! What was more disappointing for me was that I had selected this lipstick based on online swatches. I did not get to swatch it at the counter because they did not have a tester for this one. What was upsetting is that once I opened the lipstick at home, I saw swatch marks on the side of the bullet!! Disgusting! Anyway 🙁

So, BREAKING NEWS – the drugstore brands have reached the 1K mark for lipsticks….fairly quickly too!

About the Shade:

Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick – 18 Violine Strass 3

Violine Strass is a plummy violet shade. I don’t know what’s with me, I invariably end up buying 2 lipsticks from each collection and one will definitely be plummy! I keep telling myself, I will pick something red or brown (away from my pinks and plummy tones) but….You know the rest!

So, this one is a plummy violet with pink undertone. I personally love these shades and wear them the year round. However, for some, this might be a fall lipstick.  The color is bright but deep. It is not a unique color – though in the swatches I had seen online, the pink undertone seemed to be stronger, which is what I would have liked! However, on my lips, this looks like an easily dupable shade.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick – 18 Violine Strass 4

The texture of the lipstick is light and smooth, almost like a balm. It glides on easily and there is no pull or drag. The coverage for this shade was fairly opaque. It has a light glossiness, not shimmer or sheen – which lasts for about an hour and then fades off.

Unlike Rose Millesime, this color lasted about 4 hours on my lips – when applied directly, With lip liner, it easily stretched to 6 hours and the look was less glossy. With either application, it left a pink stain which lasted another couple of hours.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick – 18 Violine Strass 5

To sum this up for you:

Pros of Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick – 18 Violine Strass:

  • Easily wearable color.
  • Will suit most skin tones.
  • Light, smooth, balm-like texture.
  • Easy application.
  • Fabulous packaging.
  • Hydrating on the lips and lips felt soft for an hour or so post the lipstick disappearing (the 10- hour claim is definitely a stretch)!

Cons of Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick – 18 Violine Strass:

  • The price point – considering it’s a drugstore brand – is ridiculous!
  • Transfers – on every surface it comes in contact with!

Grande Finale:

IMBB Rating:

3.5/5

It’s a product worth trying but definitely not at the current price point! I would suggest to check whether it is still available in your area at the original price point and take a call, but for a color more unique than this one!

So, what do you feel about the current price hike, especially for lipsticks, of the drugstore brands? Would you pick this up? Do share your views through comments.

Have a great week!

  1. Ohhhhhhh man 1000 bucks *scared* *scared* *shock* *shock* the colour is good no doubt but still… yes correctly buy Mac or even loreal and revlon or even lakme’s new collection *pompom* *pompom* 600-700 is cool but this price would hurt the pocket *headbang*

    1. I agree Saloni! Its insane! And they have hiked the price of existing product by 150 INR!! I have actually started wondering if its natural progression or insanity. If the product were at par to the high end brands then we wouldn’t crib so much, would we?!!

  2. Kulpreet…..as always, enjoyed reading through your review *hihi* Bourjois lipstick Rs. 955, no wonder Lakme is coming up with insane pricing as well *headbang*

    1. Thanks Jomol! I intend to steer clear of drugstore brands for lippies! I’d rather pay a little more and have a better quality product! *nonono*

  3. that’s a very beautiful color kulpreet and you look pretty. I looooved how you have paired your eyeliner with the lipstick— really cute :))

  4. Nice colour Kulpreet. Looks good on you . But I find it disgusting that it was already swatched . I also had a bad experience at Central when I bought a mascara which when I opened at home was dried up and useless . We should be more careful while purchasing cosmetics at mall ( since they have no exchange , money return policy for cosmetics ) . We should not trust the sales girls there and check properly ourselves.

    1. *thankyou* for your words! It probably would have gone to the back of the box without being used had it not been for this review. *nababana* I have learned my lesson…will ensure I open and see the product before leaving the counter!

  5. Review was a pleasure reading..
Ah..me too was suprised yesterday when the lady at lifestyle said 955 for this one..I was like..all over IMBB its 775 *hunterwali*
Thy had a beautiful orange shade whch was soo pretty though. But a short living lippie for that price is bad.

  6. *thankyou* Maria! Couple of the colors are really nice. But at the current price, I do think one can pick something better!
