Complete details about the attachments HERE

Epilator is one of the best things that has happened to me in my 2 1/2 years of blogging. I bought Braun Silk Epil 5 in January and didn’t use it for a very long time. Now that I am using it regularly, I thought I’d write a review.

My epilator model is 5395. It is an epilator cum shaver. Epilator for arms and legs and shaver for the sensitive areas.

It comes with the following attachments :

  • Epilator head with 40 tweezers
  • Shaving head
  • Dual massage system to stimulate the skin before and soothe it after the hair is pulled out.
  • Efficiency pro cap that fits the body curves
  • A cleaning brush
  • An ice pack with glove
  • A separate tool that you can use to lift the hair up for better shave.

When I started epilating first, it was very painful. Also, I did not get a close shave because it was paining so much that I didn’t use to go over the hair a couple of time. I guess slowly you get use to it. The three most important tips that I can give you are:

  • Exfoliate regularly and you would be able to get as good results as you get from waxing.
  • Epilate when you hair is short. Don’t wait for full grown. You would only be inviting torture for yourself. 😛
  • Hold the epilator 90 degrees and go against the direction of the hair. Some people mention going in the direction but that has not worked for me.
I mostly have crunch of time and salons are really not my cup of tea. I try to do as many things as I can at home only. I wanted to get rid of that waxing trip also. Plus hair starts growing back after 15 days of waxing and I had to wait for next 15 days in order to get best waxing results. And with summers approaching I totally like to enjoy wearing my dresses and skirts. So, I was determined to make epilator work for me.
This epilator gives me super close results. It is easy and convenient. It comes with a two pin adaptor so I can use it anywhere in the world. I epilate atleast once a week. In fact, on most days I just get ready and  then epilate my arms and legs. It’s like doing body makeup. 😛 Every single attachment is useful. You can adjust the speed according to your preference. The ice pack is great but I rarely use it now. But those who have sensitive skin, it’s a great thing to have. The cleaning brush is awesome. Don’t lose that tiny thing EVER. I add a bit of MAC brush cleanser on it and clean the attachments. This way it disinfects and cleans the instrument.
The massaging rollers help in minimizing the pain. But trust me, once you get used to epilation you wouldn’t feel the pain. The flexi cap is great especially for going on top of the knee area or on the calves. The little light attached on the switch really helps you get the tiniest of hair.
The shaver works great for the sensitive areas.
I am soooooo happy with this whole system. It is so worth the investment.  I am hair free almsot 27 days of the month. 😛 If I would give 10/10 to waxing, I’d give 9/10 to epilation. Sometimes when you have not exfoliated well, it gets very difficult to get a close shave. But what I do is that I exfoliate regularly for 2-3 days and then epilate again. My legs and arms are smooth again. In fact,  few days back when I went to salon, the girl who used to do my waxing asked me if I had started getting waxing done elsewhere. When I told her about epilator, she looked quite impressed with the results. 😀
Oh! did I tell you that you get a  two year warranty for this? 😉
The only drawback I’d list is that this is not battery operated. But I am okay with that too. I have never had issues using it in any hotel room or at home. But if you get a lot of power cuts , I’d say that you invest in one that is battery operated.

  1. even i use epilator, mine is from philips it comes with all the same attachment like this one, its my BFF for summers !!! 🙂
this one looks soo pretty * pink * *pink * 🙂

  2. i wanted to get one as nowadays i am not liking waxing as i need to wait for a long time to let the hair grow back. Am now confused whether i should get this one or the philips one…

  3. great review…Infact even I have a braun silk epil purchased years ago and is now lying there in my cupboard for ages…after reading this I am encouraged to get it out again and get used to using it…its trupti for parlour visits one has to wait for almost a month, and then doin outfit posts also become difficult.

    1. i know prajakta. It was really getting one me. Plus it’s soo hot here in delhi i barely wear trousers or jeans. It would have been horrifying not having an epilator and waiting for hair to grow back. thanks 🙂 Give it a shot! 🙂

  4. i too love my epiliator.. although it is a smaller version.. vl get d best of d lot some day.. but these epiliators make d whole waxing process such a relief.. n i soooo agree vd d point of nt waiting for d hair to grow back..

  5. I so badly wanna cut down those waxing trips….and a new thing that happened last time I visited acted like the nail in the crack. It gave me swollen armpit glands, pained a lot for few daysss 🙁 🙁

  6. I want this Rati….I have heard so about it from you and it is so worth investing those rupees into buying this one 🙂

  7. mera dil aa gaya hai ispe 😛
if i ever buy one it will be this one
like u said almost like wax and can do it often unlike wax 🙂 loved it…and have seen ur skin in the pics…its great which means this is great too..

    1. neha yeah. Initially since i was not used to it, i dint use to do close epilating so it used to leave stubble behind. But now exfoliation along with close epilation has totally made the diference. It keeps my legs and arms smooth. :))

  8. another thing time is really and issue and so is going out to salons for mums like me … i think a couple of body wax trips will sum up to this ones cost(to motivate hubby to fund for it) right na?

  9. I have one.. The same thing.. I bought it 2 years back.. Not sure about the model.. its from braun too.. A yellow one.. I have used it twice only.. It pained like hell.. I have thick hair on my legs.. Now I just shave off daily in my shower.. Cant stand the pain

    1. i also have thick hair.. actually you have to get used to it and epilate when hair are shorter. as in try epilating after 3-4 days of shaving. 🙂 and use ice pack. 🙂

  10. ur review has come right on time, thanks Rati….I am planning to get one for myself….this seems to be great buy.

  11. i m thinking of buying an epilator.. but m afraid of the pain.. but m also tired of waxing appointments and waiting for full growth.. could u pls tell me is epilator worth tha Pain?? n how much pain does it cause??

    1. it pains a lot initially but once you get used to it, it does not pain as much. in fact now I find it less painful than waxing because actually epilating every week means I am pulling out less hair every week. It ofcourse gets less painful for me than waxing when I have to bear the pain of geting rid of full grown hair.

  12. Switching over to suppa-speedy-&-sophisticated-epilating frm chip-chipa-tedious-waxing-rituals is one of the bestest decisions I have taken in my life…*Drama Queens are entitled for xaggerations* 😛

      1. oh!!! what made me select….. umm i went to braun authorized dealer and he convinced me hihih.. my main reason was shaver cum epilator. I thought if nothing works atleast I’d have a shaver that i’d be able to use. But I use shave only on sensitive areas now. 😀

  13. I had been eying the Philips one for sometime.. Earlier I was unable to choose between Panasonic and Philips… Now I am even more confused 😐 Panasonic or Philips or Braun.. 😐

    1. pick whichever fits your needs and budget pallavi. the main thing is that you have to get used to epilating or else either would be a waste for you. 🙂

  14. Hi can someone tell me how to exfoliate dry/sensitive skin in the arms and legs ? Any specific product or some method which can be done at home ? Plzzz help !!! :'(

  15. i have an old Braun which makes sound like a tractor… ouch… this seems to have all great attachments like massage head and tool for lifting hair and ice pack.. me jealous.. hi hi.. 🙂

  16. Wow!! I too have a braun epilator… seems its time I show it the light of the day and put it to use… I bought it a couple of years ago but dint use it… afraid of the pain really and preferred waxing… but if we can get used to the pain, I am ready to give it a try.

  17. I’ve a panasonic epilator and the best thing i ever got 😛
And i agree Rati,we gotot epilate when the hair is short..else its a real pain..Last week i epilated after 20 days and learnt a lesson..
BTW, what camera u have??i jus lov the way you click the macro shots..

  18. That looks nice…but I am somehow scared of epilators..going for waxing was a pain..now I have this lady who comes at home and does it whenever I am free..so its working as of now..would surely try in future 🙂

  19. I recently got braun epilator last month..though looks very similar to this but cant remember the exact no..totally love it! i too hate going to parlors!

  20. i recently started to use an epilator (3 months ago) and i will not sweitch ever again. i even epilate my armpits which used to be very painful o.O
i have epilated my arms before when i was younger but something happend to where i started to shave again. luckly now i changed my habbits of shaving every second day. it is the best feeling ever to not have to epilate more than twice a month!! i am using one from Braun too i dnt know what model it is though and i am happy with it so far 🙂
    thanks for the review 😀

  21. you know after going through your last f.o.t.d ,,,,,,, i really wanted to ask you what you were using on your legs 😉

i knew it was some epilator , but which one ?????

now i know 🙂 thanx for the review 😉

    1. actually it took me long to get such neat legs. initially i couldnt get closer shave because of the pain so there used to be stubbles. 🙁 then exfoliation laziness so ingrown hair… grrr.. … my legs became cleaner with regular usage and understanding how the epilator works best for me. i guess everyone has to find their way of how it works. :))

also, my camera is bit kind to me. hihihihi 😛

  22. I use an emjoi optima. Bought a demo (used once) model off eBay for a third of the retail price and I love it. I just need to find an excellent body scrub that I can use regularly to avoid the darn ingrown hairs.

  23. Super review! 😀 😀 I have the same model but mine has been weeping in some forgotten corner of my closet. 😛 Will have to unearth it and start using it again. The pain is a deterrent but then again, it’s probably better than the pesky fortnightly trips to the parlour.

    1. Also, can you give some tips on how to go about the whole process of epilation? As in, do you exfoliate in the shower first, epilate on dry skin and then moisturise it? When do you use the ice pack? Immediately after you’re done inflicting the torture on your skin?

  24. this indeed is a blessing 🙂 I have the panasonic one and its very similar to this 🙂 btw- I second with Jabberwocky… could you plz elaborate on the sequence.. and the ice pack too.

  25. Such nice detailed review Ratiii….and it looks soo cuute!! 😀 😀 😀 😀 I am currently using Philips one..I have Braun one for sensitive areas, brows and chin …and it is awesome! I’d consider getting this soon now!! 😀 😀 😀

  26. I have a slightly older version of this and I love ! Although maybe epilators arent the best thing for lazy ppl like me – once also if i get too lazy and the hair has grown too long – I HAVE to go to the parlour. But nothing can beat the convenience of an epilator – not even an at home waxing aunty – whom u still have to call in advance. I love that u compared it to body make up :O 😛

  27. Does one get red bumps or rashes once you epilate? I have been so confused for months whether to buy it or not 🙁

  28. indeed good you got the one which is not battery operated
I have a panasonic one which is battery operated and it discharges in 30-45 mins which is nt sufficient to do both the hands fully
and dey take a lot of tym to get charged fully.

wish v can get battery cum chord ones 😀

  29. Does the shaver leaves hair coarse and kanta like on sensitive areas.. or is it better to get them professionally done???

  30. Could you please tell me after using epilator for long time what is the hairs condition did it grow thick, hard and skin become black. I am afraid of all these things. Can anyone explain thanks

  31. I’m so glad that I have got to know about the importance of using an epilator. I’m having braun silk epil-5 which is in pink colour and have not used it for the past 2-3yrs. I need to use them now.My husband said that he’ll try if it works well on his skin so that i could try them with sheer confidence.Since it is battery run machine he was very much skeptical that he try them first on his skin. Will it be okay if this epilator is tried on his skin..? Cos I was taken aback by the kind of instructions and some safety tips given by the braun silk epilator website.Just want to be sure as I’m a beginner in using this epilator.

  32. Thx Rati.. Few follow up questions:
    1. It’s been almost 2 yrs, are you still happy with this epilator?
    2. By exfoliating regularly, do you mean using the massage roller everyday or what do you do?
    3. Would the adapter be 110-230v? Meaning works in India and US?
Thank you for taking time to help me, I am grateful!
