Burt’s Bees Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm with Kokum Butter

burt's bees lip balm
Hello everyone!

Winter is in full swing here at my place. And my dry skin woes too ☹ Though I spend most part of the day indoors, the dry hot air that is blown out of the central heating is not good for my skin. Even with a humidifier on, I feel there is not enough moisture in the air.

When it comes to lip balms, Burt’s Bees with pomegranate oil has been my go to one. Recently I noticed one with Kokum Butter. The name sounded familiar, yet I couldn’t recall what exactly it was. I purchased the balm, came home & did some reading on it. Was surprised to find that the Kokum plant (Garcinia indica) is indigenous to India! And the dried fruit is used in many recipes in my native Karnataka!! Making a mental note to ask my mom about this, let me continue with the review of this lip balm.

This lip balm is 100% natural and has Cocoa and Shea butters in addition to the Kokum. They say that Kokum is rich in essential fatty acids & Vitamin E.

The complete ingredient list is not on the package but can be found on Burt’s Bee’s website.

Packaging: The product comes in a standard fuss-free twist tube like most other lip balms.
Price: US $4.00 for 4.25 gms. (I got it at a sale price of $3.00)
Color: Product looks Creamish-White but leaves no color on the lips.

What the company claims: “Clinically proven to moisturize for 4 hours with 1 application”

Is the claim true? Read my experience to find out….

My Experience with Burt’s Bees Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm

One swipe each on the upper & lower lip is enough. The balm is super rich. I didn’t feel the need to do multiple swipes. I could instantly feel that my dry chapped lips were being hydrated. And when I spread my lips, they didn’t feel dry anymore. It gives the lips a super lustrous shine.

I was wondering if this could really last for 4 hours. And whether I will be able to wait that long without eating or drinking anything ☺. It’s winter you see…. hunger pangs attack me every half hour. Well, my good friend from another part of the country called me and we yapped for like an hour!! After one hour, my lips were still feeling smooth. I ran to the mirror to check my lips. The shine was gone. I then ate my lunch. By the end of my meal my lips were feeling dry again. I felt the need to reapply again. So the company claim about 4 hours moisturization might hold good if you don’t eat or drink anything in that time.

Now, here is one more interesting thing about this lip balm. The company claims that there are no added flavors or fragrances in this balm. And yet there is a very distinct smell to the balm. It resembled the smell of taffy to me (remember the 50ps sweet taffies that we used to get in the 80s & 90s). The smell might be from one of the ingredients itself.

Pros of Burt’s Bees Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm with Kokum Butter

• 100% natural
• Hypo-allergenic, clinically tested
• Can be used as a base before applying other lip products.

Cons of Burt’s Bees Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm with Kokum Butter

• Even though it’s devoid of any fragrances, it has a sweet smell to it. Might be an issue for people allergic to fragrances.
• Definitely needed reapplying before 4 hours in my case.

Will I repurchase this product?
I would. But I know this lip balm is going to last a long time for me. And I want to try the mango flavored one next.
