C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve Review

C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve Review

Hey guys,

Today, I will be talking about a product that has several close variations, all from different brands. It’s none other than a “rose salve,” which, put simply, is rose-infused petroleum jelly. This one is by C.O. Bigelow and promises to be a multi-purpose product that’s good for use from your head to your toes. I’ve tried it a couple of different ways; to see whether it’s a stud or a dud read on!

Product Description:

“C.O. Bigelow’s famous Rose Salve has been a favorite since the early days, due to its ability to care for lips and beautify skin. Emulsified with extra-soothing rose extract, to help ease irritation and condition the skin. May be used on lips, face, cuticles, elbows, knees, chapped or very dry skin patches.”

The product comes packaged is a super cute, pink, vintage-inspired tin. If you love products with a vintage feel and the color pink, as I do, you’ll love reaching out for this. The tin is pretty sturdy, and while it stays in place, it’s also super easy to open. The tin is light and very portable.

My Take on C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve:

So, I am a big, big fan of Smith’s Rosebud Salve and the similarity between that product and this salve piqued my interest. I decided to try this out and see how it performs compared to my favorite salve. I’ve used it a couple different ways, including using it to remove my makeup and moisturizing my lips. I’ll address each of those in this review, but before we get started can I give another major shout out to the packaging. I am in love with this packaging. I absolutely love pulling this out of my purse for touch ups and have had several people ask me what this “cute” looking product was. This tin retails for $5.50, and for that price this product seems like a total steal.

Coming to the performance, which I often forget is what really matters 😛 (and not just the packaging!). For the lips, this is sufficiently moisturizing. It is easy to apply, seems to absorb well and gives skin a healthy sheen. While my lips feel good when I’m wearing this, I don’t think it makes a difference to the overall texture and color of lips over time. Also, because my lips are more purple-brown than pink, the color doesn’t really show up. The product goes on clear both on my lips and on the skin.

Speaking of skin, this does a decent job of moisturizing the skin. Because it’s petroleum based, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t hydrate my skin, but it does keep moisture intact. Just like my lips, this feels soft on my elbow and knees when I have it on, but I haven’t seen an improvement in the condition of my skin. It’s a little too much to expect from a petroleum-based product to transform the condition of your skin, so I won’t say I’m disappointed. Overall, this does a good job of making the skin feel soft and smooth while I have it on. This makes a great makeup remover, both for touch ups through the day and for use at the end of the day. Because it’s thinner than your usual petroleum jellies, it’s easy to spread around and it creates a little friction when you take it off. This makes it a good option for removing eye makeup.

Because it is so similar to Smith’s Rosebud Salve, making a comparison seems inevitable. I think both product’s have adorable packaging, but since I have a soft spot for pink in my heart, this one wins that round. The fragrance of C.O. Bigelow’s Rose Salve seems a little bit artificial compared to Smith’s Rosebud Salve, but it’s not offensive. It’s just not natural-smelling either. This is a little runnier than Smith’s Rosebud Salve, which makes it a better eye makeup remover. However, when it comes to use on skin and lips, I prefer Smith’s Rosebud Salve since it seems to be more moisturizing. At the end of the day, this product gives you total value for the money and I will repurchase it! I recommend it to everyone, regardless of your skin tone or type. This is bound to be a universally-appealing product!

    1. Do you find it helps alleviate your condition over time? It keeps my dryness under control when I have it on, but I haven’t noticed a difference in my skin over time…
