But to answer that question, we must first understand what acne is. Well, acne is a skin condition caused due to clogging of hair follicles of oil, bacteria, sebum, and dead skin cells. How Does our Bed Cause Facial Acne?
Well, since the most important underlying cause of acne is dirt and pollution clogging up your facial pores and given the fact that the beds that we sleep on can get dirty, chances are pretty high that under such circumstances, your bed might be causing breakouts. Now, we all hate doing laundry, but we think it is safe to assume that all of us hate having intermittent breakouts of acne even more.

It is a rather well known that our pillowcases are a breeding ground for bacteria because of dirt and oil accumulation. Unlaundered pillowcases might just be the unholy combination that can trigger a rather nasty bout of acne.

Also, people who are in the callous habit of going to bed without washing one’s face or sleeping with their makeup on, let’s just say that they are inviting a lot of unwanted trouble, albeit unknowingly. When we are asleep, the day’s dirt and pollution and skin oil transfers from our faces to our pillowcases and as such, as the night moves on and we sleep on, we twist and turn in our sleep that causes friction between our faces and pillowcase that can either trigger or aggravate the crisis of an acne breakout even further.

Again, sometimes it is the fabric of our bed sheets and pillowcases that might harm our skin’s health. However, it is relevant at this point to mention that not all people are prone to acne due to their beds and pillowcases. Nevertheless, there’s never any harm in cultivating healthy habits.

How can we reduce breakouts due to bed?

Here are the remedies that you can follow to prevent occurrence of the same:

  • It is advisable to sleep on natural fabrics as these materials allow skin to breathe. Sleep on silk pillowcases as cotton pillowcases tend to get dirty easily. Also, make sure that you use fabrics that are white because if you are using treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or retinol, these will bleach them and interact with the fabric.
  • Please do take care to remove your makeup and wash your face before you hit the sack.
  • Keep bedsheets and pillowcases clean, just to be sure that such breakouts don’t happen. Wash your bedsheets once in a week but change pillowcases every day.
  • The detergents that you use to clean your bedsheets must be fragrance free since scents can irritate your skin and make acne-prone skin even worse.

From all that has been discussed so far, we guess it is safe and amply evident to say with a certain degree of certainty that our beds might be a root cause for our acne breakouts and as such it is prudent to take the aforementioned necessary precautions seriously.
