Everyone has some kind of products they gravitate towards. Some like high-end products while other prefer drugstore brands. I know people who are all about supporting and using local brands, while others wouldn’t be caught dead buying them! I tend to pick up products that use organic and natural ingredients, as they fit my values and lifestyle. A category I’m rarely drawn to is the dermatologist-recommended, fragrance-free type. Incidentally, today I will be reviewing a product from that very category, Cerave’s Moisturizing Lotion.

Product Description:

CeraVe’s moisturizing lotion is described as “fast absorbing” and “formulated to increase your skin’s ability to attract, hold and distribute moisture.” It claims to “penetrate deeply to restore balance and essential lipids without leaving any heavy or greasy feeling behind.” Its “fragrance-free and non-comedogenic formula contains MVE (MultiVesicular Emulsion) technology, to gradually release the nourishing and protective ingredients into the skin, helping your skin stay hydrated all day.”

The product comes in a white, opaque, plastic bottle. The design is very basic and very text-heavy. However, it has a very modern feel because of the font and colors used.

My Experience with CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion:

About three to four months back, I decided I needed to switch my facial moisturizer. I was using a heavy cream at the time and felt I should switch over to a lighter lotion. I needed something that was light, moisturizing, and wouldn’t break me out. After doing a little bit of research on the internet, I settled on CeraVe. I loved the value I was getting in the product. It was three times the quantity of my regular cream, for a third of the price! However, within the first three days of using the product on my face, I started breaking out. I never ever put it on my face again (with good reason, right?). Since the bottle doesn’t specify whether this is a face or body lotion, I started using the rest on my body. What follows is my experience with this product as a body lotion.

Let’s start with what works. This lotion is very lightweight, because its base ingredients are water and glycerin. Since so many lotions and creams use mineral oil as base and feel heavy on the skin, this really stands out in comparison. It absorbs fairly quickly, without the need to really rub it in. This saves a lot of time after showers, since I don’t have to wait for it to sink in before getting dressed. The lotion is not greasy at all. It leaves skin feeling pretty soft and smooth, without weighing it down. It does a decent job as moisturizing dry patches and softening knees and elbows.

What doesn’t work too well is the smell and the packaging. As Neha mentioned in the review for CeraVe’s cleanser, the opaque bottle doesn’t make much sense. It’s really hard to get an idea about how much product is being used, if you can’t see it. Usually, this isn’t a big issue for me; however, since this is a pretty small bottle for a body lotion, it’s harder to get a sense of when to buy a new bottle just by how heavy it feels. Another minor issue I have with this product is the fragrance (or lack thereof!). Due to the fact that this lotion’s USP is the “dermatologist recommended” tag, it states it has no fragrance, which can often irritate those with sensitive skin and noses. However, this product isn’t completely devoid of a smell. It has a very subtle medicine-type smell to it. It’s not particularly bothersome to my nose; it’s just I’d rather use something that smells pleasant.

What doesn’t work at all is that the lotion needs to be reapplied through the day. I find that my skin drinks this up quick, is good for about an hour or two, and then feels dry again. This would definitely work better as a summer time moisturizer because it is so light. Another thing that doesn’t work is the price. If you’re using this as a body lotion, the amount you get for the price makes it quite expensive for a drugstore brand. There are a lot of cheaper products on the shelves, which work better and cost a lot less than this one.

• Will make a decent summer moisturizer.

Cons of CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion:

• Medicine type smell.
• Hydration doesn’t last.
• Broke my face out.
• Expensive for a drugstore body lotion.
• Contains parabens.
