Chanel N°5 Eau De Toilette Spray Review

Hey gorgeous gals,

Today’s review is on one of my prized possessions – Chanel No. 5 Eau De Toilette…”bas naan hi kafi hai” – right? This was a surprise gift from my sister. Actually, my hubby was supposed to get this for me on one of his trips out. And he did, or at least he thought he did! Because what he came home with was the Chanel No. 5 body lotion instead. When will men stop to ask for directions!!! Anyway, so my sister came to know of this debacle and decided to come to my rescue and gifted me this iconic fragrance. Let us find out more about it:

My Experience with Chanel N°5 Eau De Toilette Spray:

A perfume launched in 1921 – and is still around – that pretty much says it all, doesn’t it? The perfume which has the honour of being the preferred fragrance of Marilyn Monroe!! However, is it for everyone? Let’s find out more about it:

Packaging: The packaging is fairly simplistic but interesting. It’s a cylindrical glass bottle with a pump dispenser on top. Yes, the bottle. Refer to the pics for details. Yes, the gold detailing of my bottle seems to be showing wear. It isn’t because of age – it’s just that the humidity of Mumbai has spoilt the look of pretty much all my perfume bottles.

Coming back to the fragrance – the Chanel No. 5 has a fragrance unlike any other in my kitty. I generally lean towards more woody, earthy, musky complex perfumes. This is anything but that, but then again, this wasn’t a perfume I had tried before I bought. This was short-listed solely based on its iconic standing. Who doesn’t want to own Chanel No.5, right? Honestly, if it wasn’t for all the yarns around it, I don’t know how many people would actually love this perfume. No, don’t get me wrong – it’s not a bad perfume. On the contrary, it’s quite fab. However, it has an old world charm around it. This is a fragrance which reminds you of old world settings – ballrooms and dancing. Perfumes nowadays tend to be more complex – they go through layers and layers of variations in tones to reveal the base notes. This on the other hand, is fairly straightforward – it opens with distinctly floral notes of jasmine and tubers and a kick of aldehydes which settles to reveal a touch of jasmine and settles into a powdery elegance. The initial burst of effervescent fragrance settles down fairly quickly to a much more subtle note. In some ways, it reminds me of one of the Estee Lauder perfumes Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia, maybe it’s the tuberose in both of them or the fact that both perfume have an old-world charm.

Honestly, this perfume is not for everybody. I’m not saying it is too elite or too classy or something. It’s just that the powderiness of the fragrance and the clear jasmine notes may not strike a chord with everyone. Its too old world. I don’t find myself reaching for this too often – solely because it doesn’t always fit into my scheme of things.

For someone interested in this iconic fragrance, I would suggest, try before you buy. Do I regret buying it? No, not really. It has its place in my collection and I quite like it, but it definitely isn’t my no. 1 fragrance.

It does have a decent silage – the fragrance sticks close to the skin for a long time, about 6-7 hours, but is definitely mild.

I find this to be more of an evening perfume and more suited to autumn/winter climate.

Pros of Chanel N°5 Eau De Toilette Spray:

  • Decent silage.
  • Clean classic packaging – easy to travel with.
  • The perfume is a fairly unique blend of aldehydes and strong floral scents.
  • A strong distinct fragrance with an old world charm.
  • Definitely makes you feel special.

Cons of Chanel N°5 Eau De Toilette Spray:

  • Perfumes are anyway subjective in taste; however, the “powderiness” of this one may not be to everyone’s liking.

IMBB Rating:
4/5
It’s a clean sexy fragrance but maybe a bit too powdery for everyone’s taste. The strong jasmine scents lend it a sweetness but not the asinine types. I can understand how this could be someone’s signature fragrance, but it’s definitely an acquired taste.

  1. there was an era i was going crazy to own one but the price tag kept my intentions under control and i ended up purchasing a sampler. yes! samplers are sold in this part of the world. though i liked the elite perfume but there are many with floral and Jasmine notes at much lesser price. great guide to chanel no 5 dreamers and I’m amazed it was never reviewed….!
