Chocolate Lip Balm: Do-it-Yourself

Hello everyone,

Today, I am going to share a DIY recipe for a lip balm in a yummy chocolate flavor. It is a basic lip balm which makes your skin soft and smooth without addition of any harmful chemicals. I made around 4 little tubs of it and gifted it to my mom and sister as well. They loved it too.

Ingredients:
As I made multiple boxes of it, I had to implement trial and error method. However, I will share the proportion that I had used last time and it had come out perfectly.

1. Castor/Coconut oil-1 tsp. Castor oil is best for this.
2. Honey-1 tsp
3. Shea Butter-1 tsp
4. Beeswax-4 pellets. This should be increased to 5-6 pellets at warmer places.
5. Cocoa Powder-1/2 tsp. Be careful not to increase the amount, otherwise your lips would have a brown stain.
6. Vitamin-E oil-1/2 capsule.
7. Peppermint essential oil (optional)-3-4drops. This would add cooling feel to the lip balm and would work great for summers.

Step 1:
Take a small steel bowl and add beeswax and shea butter to it. Hold it at a little height from the low flame with the help of tongs. Alternately, you can also use microwave to heat it. But it should be mixed every 30 seconds.
Step 2:
Once the beeswax and the shea butter mixture begin to melt, add the castor/coconut oil and honey. Mix well.
Step 3:
Add cocoa powder and Vitamin-E oil in the end once the mixture is completely liquefied. Mix well once more.
Step 4:
Pour it in a clean container. This way the lip balm would settle smoothly, just like the store-bought one. If you are not comfortable with this or you are using a plastic container, let it cool down in the bowl itself. Transfer it later with help of a spoon.
This can be easily carried around and is quite effective. It lasts easily for around 5 hours and leaves the lips smooth even after fading out. This batch of lip balm can be stored for more than a month.

Benefits of the ingredients used:

  • Shea Butter, beeswax and castor oil have excellent moisturizing properties. Beeswax also prevents melting of the lip balm at room temperature.
  • Honey makes the lip balm a little sticky, which increases the staying power of the lip balm.
  • Cocoa powder would mostly add the amazing aroma.
  • Vitamin-E oil not only moisturizes but also acts as a natural preservative.
  • So, if you are a fan of chocolate and like things chemical-free, do give it a try!
