Christian Louboutin Oeil Velours Velvet Eye Definer Kohl, Deep Teal, Zoulou, Hot Chick, Fierce Review

I picked up all the 5 eyeliner pencils called “Velvet Eye Definer” from Christian Louboutin’s Eye makeup range. I have been using them from past few months and here’s my review of all the 5 colors. 🙂

Price:
€40/ INR 2800 approximately.

Packaging:
Available in 5 shades. Each pencil comes with its own sharpener. The sharpener is of really good quality and sharpens the pencils beautifully without breaking them. It works with other standard eyeliner / lip liner pencils as well.

The colors are:

Kohl: A dark jet black. Love how intense black this is. It is one of the richest deepest black eyeliners I have in my collection. It is also one of the most long-lasting black kohls I have ever tried. I have worn it for good 7-8 hours and it has stayed on my waterline and on my lash line as well. In fact, I literally have to remove it properly at the end of the say because it is still pretty much intact at the end of the day.

Deep Teal:  As the name suggests, it’s a beautiful deep teal blue shade. The teal color does not last long enough on my oily eyelids on its own. I also have a bit of hooded eyes so the eyeliner tends to transfer up quite a bit. With this one, I found I always had to prime my eyelids before using. And then it was bang on both on upper lids and waterline.

Zoulou:  Deep chocolatey brown. It’s a gorgeous dark rich brown color. On days when you don’t want to wear black, you always have this plus I love how smooth and rich it is. That said, it is great for those with light to medium skin tone. It might show up that well on dusky skin tones. You have to build this color up and only then it stays on for good 5-6 hours on both waterline and lower lash line. If you use just one swipe of it, it would pretty much disappear after an hour.

Dupes:  Bobbi Brown Sepia Ink.
Lakme Earthline:
Maybelline Glazed Toffee

Hot Chick:  A chartreuse green. It is not as pigmented as I would have preferred it to be but still a lovely lime green color that would add fun to any basic eye makeup look. My favorite way to use it is just on the inner corner of my eye (this way – Eid look). It looks lovely on the waterline was well. Not the most long-lasting one among the five.

Dupe:  Lime Crime Citreuse Liquid Liner

Fierce: A wine plum color. This has a metallic finish to it. It’s not very pigmented and not my favourite among the 5 for sure.
Dupes:  Maybelline Eyeliner Eggplant. Sephora Plum Shimmer, The Body Shop Smoky Plum Carbon Eye Definer.

To sum it up:

Stunning gold black packaging. Love that these are sharpenable pencils and also come with a sharpener. They are soft and glide on the eyes without tugging but they don’t break. I definitely prefer these to the crazy cream eyeliners that keep breaking with the slightest bit of pressure. We are in India and literally everything melts, so I am pretty happy with them. However, these would be hard to use in winters.. 😐

These pencils are very pigmented, but the pigmentation is not consistent among all the liners though. The black one is the deepest of the lot.

You have to build them up. Just one swipe would not do enough to make them last long on either waterline or lash line. Go over the liner 2-3 times, especially for the lighter shades.

It can be smudged within seconds to get that soft smudgy smokey eye makeup look and then they set. Once set, they don’t move. But you have to be quick with them. They set pretty fast. The teal one smudges the most among 5 of them.

These are super long lasting (when built up). I have worn all of them for good 7-8 hours and they have stayed amazingly well both on waterline and lower lash line. If you have hooded eyes such as mine, I suggest that you rub off the excess by swiping your finger lightly on top of the liner to prevent it from smudging and then it sets. Since you have to build these liners, they get blunt in one use only and you have to sharpen them every time. You would finish using them up pretty soon. Never irritated my eyes.

Overall, I think it is a decent range of eyeliners but not “blow you out of the water” kinds…except black and teal; the black eyeliner especially is so black, rich and intense. It is definitely one of my most favourite blacks ever. You really have to build up the color by swiping it a few times if you want them to last long. The pigmentation is great but it fades if you don’t build it up. If I have to suggest, I’d suggest the black and the teal one. Are they worth the price? Well, this is Louboutin and they are probably the most expensive makeup brand out there. You take it or leave it! You definitely have dupes for the colors out there but if you want to experience the luxury of the brand, it’s worth a try. 🙂
