Packaging: The packaging of the product seems normal – an acrylic, liquid lipstick tube with a doe-foot applicator for ease of application. The sponge applicator has an indentation cut into it to create a well – so that it picks up enough product to spread over the lips.

What was surprising for me (read shocking) was the quality of sponge used on the applicator. It is just about the worst applicator that I have come across and my regular readers know that I have tried a bunch of liquid lipsticks including some drugstore offerings! It is shocking considering the price point of the product – at par with the Smashbox and the Kat Von Ds. While the quality of the applicator made me feel like it was something I picked up from a roadside stall. Needless to say – the loose sponge does a shoddy job of lining the lips. There is no way you can get clean lines with the applicator unless you use a lip brush. Please refer to the lip swatch I have shared. If you zoom in, you will see how the lipstick has gone outside the lines while applying because the sponge is so loose textured/cut without precision. I did contemplate cleansing up the messy application and creating sharp lines with a lip brush (for the pics), but I wanted to show you the actual application of this with the actual applicator – so I let it be.

My Experience with Ciate London Glitter Flip Fortune:

A quick brief on the product – while everyone was trying to launch liquid lipstick, Ciate London decided to do one up. They thought of these liquid lipsticks with a twist. So, once applied, the lipstick sets to a matte finish. However, once you purse your lips together and give them a gently wriggle – your lips explode with glitter hidden in the matte product. Needless to say, everyone wanted to try these or wanted to post their videos of the application on Insta. Bestseller idea! Anyway – back to the product in hand:

Ciate London Glitter Flip Fortune Name

Color: The shade “Fortune” is described by the brand as a warm purple shade with sparkle finish. It is a deep, blackish purple with fuchsia, bright purple and silver glitter particles. It is quite a dark and vampy shade – not quite mainstream. Would probably be appreciated by people who like experimenting with colours. The dark background makes the shimmer stand out more prominently. But, the shimmer does not feel gritty on the lips.

Texture: The texture of the lipstick is liquid and it applies smoothly, is evenly pigmented and it spreads easily. The lipstick did not feel heavy on the lips, but there was a distinct feeling of stretchiness as it dried down. When I pursed my lips together, I was worried that it might lift up pigment from the lower lip leaving it patchy, but none of that happened. It released glitter on pursing of lips and became more dimensional instead of the gothic deep purple it was post initial application. All would have been fine – however, the lipstick did not really wear too well. It did not feel drying initially. However, it was slightly drying towards the end of its wear. Also, it did not wear off evenly. It got quite patchy – especially in the middle of the lower lip and started disappearing from the inner corners. And, with this dark shade, the patchiness looks quite unbecoming and obvious. It does not leave any stain.

Pigmentation: The pigmentation is excellent. The pigment is evenly spread and does not sink into the fine lines of the lips. Nor does the texture thin out as you spread. The shade covers my lip pigmentation well.

Lasting Power: The lipstick does last a long time – even though it does not wear too well. It gives me about 5.5-6 hours of decent wear, post which I’d rather take it off than let it wear in patches.

Fragrance: There is a scent but its discernible only if I put my nose to it.

To sum this up for you:

Pros of Ciate London Glitter Flip Fortune:

  • A bold vampy black-purple shade with glitters dispersed in it.
  • Excellent pigmentation.
  • Liquid texture.
  • The pigment does not thin out nor sink into lip lines.
  • Opaque coverage.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Free from parabens, sulfates and phthalates.
  • The whole application drama makes the product interesting.

Cons of Ciate London Glitter Flip Fortune:

  • Slightly drying over time.
  • The applicator needs to be revamped and quality upped.
  • The product does not wear off evenly.

Would I Recommend/ Repurchase Ciate London Glitter Flip Fortune?
A lot of drama attached to the application experience. And honestly, that is the only thing which sets the product apart from its competitors. However, if you detach yourself from the drama a little, your thoughts may change. I feel that this is more of an experience enhancer or something gimmicky for the Insta – rather than something that would impact quality or wear. You don’t go to a party and then start pursing your lips midway through a conversation, right? So, honestly, I place it right there alongside the “gimmicky-to-hell-and-back” glitter masks doing rounds right now! Yes, go ahead and pick a shade for the fun of it all and the curiosity. I do not think I will be repurchasing this or another shade from the line.
