Clarins UV Plus HP SPF 40 Day Screen Review

Clarins UV Plus HP SPF 40 Day Screen

I’ve tried to include facial sunscreen in my daily skin care routine many times in the past, but the ones I tried either broke me out, made me itch, or made my skin greasy. It was like I had to choose between okay skin with zero sun protection, or problematic skin with sun protection. But there’s hope for me yet—I’ve been having a good run with the Clarins UV Plus HP SPF 40 Day Screen.

From the Clarins website:
Triple protection against UVA-UVB rays, free radicals and pollution from an ultra-lightweight texture that leaves skin looking smooth, soft and matte. 100% mineral sunscreen. Apply over regular day care.
Anti-oxidative stress. Formulated with a high performance, age-fighting antioxidant obtained from cantaloupe melon extract.

Price:

41 USD for 1.7 fl oz or 30ml

This thing is pretty expensive, considering the amount you get for the price you pay. The 1.7 oz bottle is small, and will most probably only last a few months if used daily. It’s a handy size though to bring along when travelling.
The bottle has a clean, simple look and a nozzle dispenser. The dispenser isconvenient; it lets me squeeze out just how much product I want.

I like the smell of this sunscreen a lot. It is such a nice change from the typical sunscreen smell that I think most of us have come to associate withsun protection products. It doesn’t smell like sunscreen. Instead it has a lotion-y, floralscent that is quite pleasant. I wouldn’t say that the scent level is strong or overwhelming, but you definitely smell it when putting it on your face.It does fade in five minutes or so.

The scent is pretty much a bonus, because the strength of the Clarins UV Plus HP SPF 40 Day Screen liesin its texture and feel. It has a thin, runny consistency, very fluid, very light, and spreads easily on the skin. It dries quickly, there’s no waiting time for it to ‘set’ before proceeding to apply my makeup. The finish of it is matte. My skin doesn’t feel dewy after application of the Clarins Day Screen, it virtually feels like nothing on.

It also does not make my skin itch, and(fingers crossed) it hasn’t broken me out. It doesn’t make my face shiny afterwards or greasy as the day goes on, and I’ve used this in high temperature and humidity. It’s great for summertime.
However I think it does make my skin a bit dry. This sunscreen is recommended for normal, oily, combination, and dry skin. My skin type is dry and sensitive. But if I were given a choice between a sunscreen that is slightly drying versus one that makes my skin feel greasy, I’d choose the former. This sunscreen is so lightweight, I don’t mind that it’s a little drying.
It doesn’t seem to leave a white cast and is also available in tinted versions. I love the high SPF level.

IMBB Rating: 4.5/5

Overall: I love that this feels like nothing on my skin. I’m glad to have found a sunscreen that’s lightweight, doesn’t make me oil up, and is also gentle to my sensitive skin. Plus it smells good. The only drawback for me, really, is the price. Unless I find something that performs this well or better but is cheaper, I’ll just have to find good deals for this (Sephora sells a set of two bottles for 60 USD).
