Cleansing, Toning & Moisturizing Oily Skin

We all know the importance of good cleansing, toning and moisturizing routine for our skin. I won’t go into the details of it instead, I will focus on the type of products one should go for keeping in mind their skin type. Let’s begin with people who need most help in summers- Oily skinned beauties.

As a general rule avoid products that contain alcohol as alcohol will deplete oil in the skin thus forcing the body to produce more. This will make your skin oilier than before. Opt for water-based products to combat the oily skin problems.

To know more about the right products just have a look at below mentioned points:

Cleansers for Oily or acne-prone skin: Opt for cleansers that are mild, even though you have the oiliest of skin, preferably those that don’t contain sulphates. Products that contain AHAs, PHAs, or salicylic acid (BHAs) are effective in breaking down oil production which in turn will help you to keep the pores cleared of debris that can cause the formation of acne and blemishes. Look for products that have very low concentrations of these acids if you have a sensitive skin that gets irritated easily.

Toners for Oily or acne-prone skin: Opt for alcohol free toners to hydrate, revitalize, soothe and balance the pH of the skin. Toners that contain alcohol or vinegar over stimulate oily skin to produce more undesirable oil.

Moisturizers for Oily or acne-prone skin: It is often seen that people with oily skin type try to avoid the moisturizing part of the skin care routine. What they don’t realise is that by doing so they are doing more harm to their skin. Lack of proper moisture leads to the overproduction of oil by sebaceous glands. Using a moisturizer will decreases oil production in the epidermis.

People with oily or acne-prone skin types should opt for water-based and noncomedogenic gels or serums. Water based products will prevent the overproduction of sebum. Products with mineral oils, mineral waxes, vitamin E and petroleum should be avoided as these products can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

Alpha hydroxy acids (like glycolic acid and lactic acid), retinol and salicylic acid are very helpful in treating mild acne problems so, look out for them in list of ingredients. But if you suffer from severe acne or are on topical acne medication then it is advisable to use dermatologist recommended products only.

Products that contain tea tree oil, grape seed oil, aloe vera gel or jojoba oil are also helpful for oily skin types.
