Imagine a scenario where you are dressed to impress with your best makeup, best dress and best accessories and you are all set to take that photo with friends. You are excited to see the photos posted on the internet and behold! The horror of the flash! Your face is white as Casper-the Friendly Ghost. Eeeks!

This has happened to the best of us (even celebrities) and it can be very frustrating. The makeup looks gorgeous in person, so why does it have to click horribly white? I read up on it and in this article, I am going to talk about what causes it and how to fix it.

What are Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide?

Titanium Dioxide is one of the key ingredients in sunscreen lotions. If your makeup contains a certain level of SPF, there is a 100% chance that it contains Titanium Dioxide. Zinc Oxide is used less as compared to Titanium Dioxide. Both these chemicals are light reflective in nature which explains why certain makeup shows up white in photos clicked with the flash on.

How To Fix:

  • First off, avoid using makeup with SPF during bridal makeup, photo shoots or a night out where the use of flash photography cannot be avoided at all. Check your makeup for titanium dioxide and zinc oxide and switch to a better foundation. Certain mineral makeup brands don’t use this ingredient.

  • Stay away from HD loose powders such as the ones from Makeup Forever. These click extremely white in photos and look horrible (from personal experience).Make-Up-For-Ever-HD-Powder
  • If you must use makeup with SPF, then use a colored loose powder; a certain beige-medium color that suits your skin tone is perfect. You can use a lighter colored loose powder (with/without slight shimmer) to highlight your cheekbones and the bridge of your nose too. Make sure these aren’t HD powders.
  • Contour well with a bronzer to make your features stand out even more in photos and reduce whiteness.

  • Blend your makeup really well and make sure your face-neck-chest is the same color. Check it in every type of light and click a self portrait to look for any left out areas on the face.
  • Stay away from extremely shiny/glittery highlighters or else you will end up looking like a shiny disco ball. These glitter particles will come off as huge shiny dots on the face. Keep the glitter only for the eye shadow and make sure it has no fall out whatsoever.
  • Make sure you keep blotting papers on you to soak up excess oil from the face and powder the areas that are shiny. Oily makeup clicks horribly in flash photography.

  • Don’t go overboard with neutral/nude lips. Add a certain pink, dull peach, light reds to brighten it up a bit. Nude lips usually click really white in flash. Also, orange lipsticks come off washed out in evening photos so keep such colors for day time.
