My Experience with Clinique A Black Honey Affair All About Shadow Palette:

Clinique has a full “Black Honey” range revolving around this black honey color which is sort of a deep reddish brown which is claimed to flatter every skin tone. I have reviewed the “Black Honey” lipstick here on IMBB a while ago. When I saw this full range of these 8-pan Clinique eyeshadow palette, this particular variant attracted me the most because of the gorgeous neutrals and pops of purple.  There are also other variants revolving around a particular color scheme like “Wear Everywhere Greens,” “Wear Everywhere Neutrals,” Wear Everywhere Greys,” etc.

Packaging:  It’s so with the mirror finish case which closes securely with a click. The mirror case is a fingerprint magnet, but the sleek and elegant factor of this palette makes up for it. There is a nice-sized mirror inside and also a two-sided brush provided.

I rarely use brushes that come along with eyeshadow palettes and this one is no exception. One side is a wispy and slightly domed, square cut, blending brush. It is soft and performs okay to do slight blending in the crease, but the lack of stiffness makes it difficult to be precise with this brush.

The other side has a sponge applicator which I never use for eyeshadows anymore. You may or may not find this brush useful; I do not particularly care for it.

Texture and Pigmentation:  These eyeshadows are very smooth and soft. They do not kick up a whole lot of powder when you dip your brush in. They do not feel chalky or powdery. The powder does feel of very good quality. Even the shimmery shades are smooth and not gritty. Some of the shadows do generate a bit of fallout but nothing too bad.  The pigmentation of the colors in this palette is good but not exceptional. I have used numerous eye palettes from basically every makeup brand sold at Sephora and Ulta, hence I may have a high standard for my eyeshadows and this palette does not meet that standard, but still it is in no way subpar.

The pigmentation is buildable and these shadows do benefit with a good base/primer to help with their vibrancy. On the plus side, these colors apply nicely and give a nice wash of color without any primer, so if you are someone who prefers softer-looking eye makeup looks, you will love these shadows.

Shades:  A “Black Honey” affair palette is a nice mix of warm and cool-toned colors and has mostly neutrals with some pops of purples.

Sugarcane”  A shimmery white, not a lot of color payoff, just gives more of a frosty finish. Makes a good brow bone and inner corner highlight or top over other color to give them dimension.

Hazy:  A taupe-y brown with a satin sheen. A good crease or transition color.

Black Honey:  It’s the color on which this palette is based. Black Honey is a gorgeous earthy reddish coppery brown. It is one of the 2 shades in this palette that has very good pigmentation above the others. This color looks very flattering in the crease or even as an all-over lid shade.

Lucky Penny:  Is a shimmery light brown with peachy undertones. It is a good all-over lid shade and good even as an inner corner highlight.

Dark brown shade of morning java quad:  As the names suggests, this shade is also available in the “Morning Java” quad by Clinique. This is the other shade along with “Black honey” which has very good pigmentation. It is a deep almost black brown. This shade can be used instead of black to give a softer look. You can use this shade all over the lid along with “black honey” in the crease of a perfect wearable smokey eye or you can always use it in the outer V or on your lower lash line.

Purple Pumps:  This is a gorgeous vivid orchid purple. It has a matte finish. This particular shade is a bit chalky and applies patchy but using it over a primer helps. Though the color is gorgeous, I don’t see it being very flattering on my skin tone, only because it is a bit cool toned, and I am more used to wearing warmer tones. But I do love to experiment and who knows I may grow fond of this color 😛

Lavender Out Loud:  It’s a light icy lilac. It has a shimmery finish and is also very cool toned which I do feel contrasts against my warm skin tone, but nevertheless, the color is gorgeous and yields decent pigmentation which is usually difficult with shades like this. This shade layered with a little bit of “Sugarcane” yields the most amazing duochrome-y lilac color as you can see in the EOTD.

Graphite:  A deep bluish grey with a hint of purple undertone and blue shimmers. The shimmers do cause a bit of fall out but it does yield good pigmentation.

Staying Power:  I am impressed with how these colors wear throughout the day. Granted, I wore them over a primer, but they did not crease or fade even at 8-hour mark and retained their vibrancy even on my oily lids.

Overall, I am quite happy with this eyeshadow palette and particularly pleased with the color scheme which will flatter most skin tones. There are a lot of neutrals for everyday and few pops of color for when you are ready to experiment. Though it is not the best in terms of quality and pigmentation of the shadows, they are still decent and I do think you get a good value for your money. I will recommend this.

In the EOTD, used a mix of “black honey” and “hazy” in the crease, “Dark brown shade of morning java” in the outer V, “purple pumps” in the middle of the lid and “”Lavender out loud” in the inner 1/3rd of the lid. Brow bone and inner corner highlight with “Sugarcane.”
