Clinique City Block Sheer Oil Free Daily Face Protector with SPF 25

Hi All,

Today, I am back with another Clinique product, this time a sunscreen from them.  For the past few years, I have not used anything on my face to protect myself from the Sun God, the sole reason being chemical sunscreens irritate my sensitive skin breaking me out into rashes. Then, finally Clinique Sheer City Block Daily Face Protector came to my rescue and I never looked back again. Read on to know why.

My Experience with Clinique City Block Sheer Oil Free Daily Face Protector with SPF 25:

This is the only sunscreen which never made my sensitive skin act up.  It is all physical and that’s all I can use. My dermatologist prescribed me Suncross gel and even that one gave me breakouts, but this never has. The best part is that it can be doubled up as tinted moisturizer also.  It evens out my skin tone beautifully, giving it a subtle glow and you never need a moisturizer follow up. It has moisturizers in it along with antioxidants to help deflect free radical damage. On days, when my skin feels drier, I wear Clinique Moisture Surge Gel Creme under it and I am sorted out. Clinique has nowhere mentioned on the packaging that this one is tinted and available in one shade.  I am light medium and I experience no problem with it and it stays all day long, but in general, Indian skin tones would be having problem making it work for their skin.

However, it protects me very well from the harsh sun rays and I never got tanned with this on.  There is another variant with SPF 40 and if you seek a higher level SPF, you can go for that one also. It has a tendency of liquid getting separated from the product, so every time I use it, I shake it vigorously for some time.  Clinique adds another feather to its crown by making it oil free, so girls with skin issues like mine who expect a lot from a product would definitely vouch for this one.

Clinique Sheer City Block 5

The major drawback of this product is that it provides very low UVA protection (PA+).  Clinique has nowhere mentioned it which I got to know doing some research online.  The other variant in this line with SPF 40 provides ( PA++). Another complaint is the quantity provided, could have been better given the price as one needs to repurchase this quite often.

Now, let’s sum up the pros and cons:

Pros of Clinique City Block Sheer Oil Free Daily Face Protector with SPF 25:

  • Contains physical UVA and UVB blockers suitable for sensitive skin.
  • It is tinted, so would not cast white cast like most physical sunscreens.
  • Hides minor imperfections and evens out skin tone.
  • Gives amazing glow to the skin.
  • Has moisturizers in it, so you won’t need a moisturizer follow up.
  • Antioxidants rich.
  • Oil free.
  • Never broke me out.
  • Protects you really well.
  • Paraben free.
  • No pore clogging ingredient.

Cons of Clinique City Block Sheer Oil Free Daily Face Protector with SPF 25:

  • Very low UVA protection (PA +)
  • Available in one shade which may not be suitable to the most Indian skin tones.
  • In hot humid months, it would make the skin greasy, so you need to use powder on top.
  • Dry skinned beauties need to use a separate moisturizer prior to the application.

Final Words:

It is another excellent product from the house of Clinique and I love this sunscreen a lot and can’t live without it. 1. oh even i am using it since some time and i absolutely love it 🙂 i have combination skin-more towards oily and highly prone to acne. i could never use sunscreens except Lotus matte but didnt it like it too much. then this one came along and made me a happy bunny 🙂 totally agree with the review and strongly recommend it

  2. Ishita….I would say “ditto” for the skin issues with respect to sunscreen. Each and every sunscreen breaks me out, even the dermatologist prescribed ones. I am using Clinique Superdefense right now, which gives me good protection, SPF 25. I gotta get this one because I love Clinique 🙂

          1. Jomol, Ishita – I have been using the SPF 40 one from this range for years now and its super awesome! Didn’t break me out even once and gives amazing sun protection.

              1. Main peeche se Sundari lagti hoon Jomol, woh bhi shoulder upwards 😛
U know I just woke up – still jet-lagged 🙁 Had thought of writing some reviews today, lekin kal hi hoga ab. How are u n hows the dehydrated state now?

  3. I love this sunscreen!! I use it daily wear n have lost count of how many tubes I have finished up 🙂 I love the fact that it is tinted.. BTW, the spf 40 variant is not completely a physical sunscreen. Thats what the SA told me.
It does work well for all skin tones. It kinda adapts to the tone. I am an NC30 and my BFF is an NC44 and both of us love using this baby! 🙂

  4. You look so cute Ishita! I have used the SPF 20 and the 40 variant, n I love both. I use the 40 one because of the higher sun protection, but the 25 one also does its job pretty well.

  5. I use the same city block sheer in SPF 25 *preen* ….it was highly recommended to me by SA in Macy’s during my visit to NYC….before then i had never used sunscreen on myself as i do not like the white cast and greasy look it gives *headbang* ..but as sun block is even more needed in US, i bought this one with lot of doubts…and it saved me big time… have also used Lotus sunblock spray too recently..dat is also descent.. *happydance*
    nice review….
