How To Make Coconut Lemon Body Butter: Do It Yourself

Hey Gorgeous Gals,

Coconut Oil is a tried, tested and much-loved ingredient for skin and hair care. One of my favorite uses for the oil is as a body moisturizer, but taking out the oil from the bottle, rubbing it on until it’s absorbed and then dealing with the smell all day is something I can’t do on a daily basis. To speed up my after-shower moisturizing routine, I decided to make myself some coconut oil body butter; just something I can scoop out of the jar and apply (instead of my old melt oil, take out into bowl, apply and put on a clothespin on my nose!).

At its most basic, this body butter just needs one ingredient – Coconut Oil. Coconut Oil is one of the easiest oils to whip into a butter. By itself, the oil moisturizes the skin and protects it from aging and damage. This recipe combines Coconut Oil with a few other ingredients to make a rich and creamy body butter. The Lemon oil adds a pleasant fragrance, Jojoba and Vitamin E oils aid absorption and the Cornstarch reduces greasiness.

Recipe:

Ingredients Needed:

Coconut Oil

  • One Cup Coconut Oil.
  • A few drops of Lemon Essential Oil (optional; can be replaced with any other essential oil or fragrance).
  • Two Tablespoons of Jojoba or Vitamin E Oil (optional).
  • One Tablespoon Corn Starch.

Utensils and Tools:

Large Bowl, Whisk, Spoon, Glass Jar and Measuring Cup.

Four Steps to One Awesome Body Butter:

Step One:

Melt one cup of Coconut Oil. You can use any 100% Coconut Oil. I had Parachute lying around the house and that’s what I’m using. You can put it out in the sun or immerse it in hot water; whatever works for you. You just need to melt it enough so that you can easily take it out of the container and mix other products into it.

Step Two:

Add a few drops of Lemon Oil or your choice of fragrance, followed by two tablespoons of Jojoba Oil and finally one tablespoon of Cornstarch. Besides the Cornstarch, everything else in this step is optional. Feel free to add any other liquid oil (Olive oil will do, no cooking oil, though!).

Step Three:

Whip it, whip it good. Coconut oil does not whip well when it is in a liquid state, so wait for it to solidify a little bit before you start to whip it. The goal is to soften the oil before you start whipping. If it’s totally solid or liquid, it won’t whip properly. If your house is warm, pop the mixture into the refrigerator for about five minutes. You can whip this by hand or with an electrical mixer.I am too lazy to get my large mixer out, so I chose to do this by hand which isn’t tiring at all. Do not use a food processor/ mixer grinder (“mixie”) to whip this because the heat from it will keep melting the oil. Whip until the texture resembles that of cake icing.

Step Four:

Scoop the mixture into a glass jar. Make sure that you have washed and dried the jar beforehand. It’s very important that no moisture be present in the jar, because even a little moisture can lead to fungus/ mold growth in the jar. Coconut oil melts at about 24-25 degrees Celsius, so unless you’re living in the Himalayas, it’s a good idea to store your body butter in the refrigerator. You can pop it out of the refrigerator whenever you need it. Make sure to label it, you wouldn’t want any family members eating this up by mistake!

Lemon Body Butter

This is a great body butter to moisturize your skin. It’s super easy and cheap to put together. It uses all natural ingredients (most of them edible, too), no petroleum products, no preservatives, and no stabilizers, etc. If stretch marks are an issue for you, like as they are for 99% of women, Coconut Oil is known to smooth them out and this butter will help with improving their appearance.

  1. Down south in Chennai have never seen coconut oil in the cream form… its always liquid…. so then what to do… can we put it the fridge and keep the completed form of body butter also in the fridge…

One more thing… can you please review the jojoba oil… have always wanted to get one… but couldn’t find it…

    1. Hey Dee,
I store my body butter in the fridge and just take it out before I shower. That gives it just enough time to soften but not turn into liquid. Once I’m done, it goes back in the fridge.

I’ll review Jojoba Oil soon, it’s one of my favorite carrier oils. I buy mine online and you can get some from Flipkart, if you’d like 🙂

    1. Thanks, Radhika. I buy all my oils from Amazon.com. Almost all of them are NOW Foods brand because it’s the best quality at a decent price 😛

  7. Hi!

Great write up and explanation! I didn’t know you could make coconut butter from its oil!!! *woot*
Is it the cornflour that basically gives it that “creaminess” because if you have coconut oil in the fridge it also become firm but not creamy. Also have you every tried it on your hair? I am thinking of trying this but I wonder about the cornflour e.g once it is in the hair will there be a “white power” look? Do you not get that on your skin?

Sorry for all the questions! Just very intrigued!

    Thanks!
