Easy Homemade Coffee Scrub and Soothing Banana Follow-up

Easy Homemade Coffee Scrub and Soothing Banana Follow-up

Hey everyone! 🙂 I’m back after quite some time now, with this super easy scrub and a follow-up, to leave your skin refreshed after a long day. I love the weather where I live currently. It rains all the time, and I just realized that I prefer mushy roads and cool indoor air to nice, dry roads and hot indoor air. I love the monsoons! 😀

I absolutely love this scrub as it is so simple to make, takes hardly a minute, uses ingredients easily available and leaves my face uber smooth and glowy. It works wonderfully well for my dry to normal facial skin and neck. And as an added bonus, it smells divine! 😀 It works for normal, combination and oily skin as well, but don’t try this over acne as it might aggravate the condition. Do not make this scrub and store it. Make a small batch just enough for one use at a time.

There are two parts to this – first is the scrub, and the second is the banana follow-up.

For the scrub,

1. Take a teaspoon of coffee powder (you can use instant or regular). I like to use regular for extra grittiness. Also, the instant dissolves partly in the liquid I add in later, which I don’t much like.

2. Add in a heaped teaspoon of baking soda. Not baking powder, mind you. One way to figure out, if you’re not sure, whether what you have with you is baking soda or baking powder, is to take a bit of it and mix it with water to make a paste. Baking powder will froth and bubble, while baking soda will not. It is also called ‘soda powder’ at some stores. It is not harshly abrasive, yet isn’t too mild. It is a wonderful exfoliant, and is the main scrubby part of this scrub.

3. Now add in very little coffee to make a paste. You can use ordinary water as well, but coffee makes it smell even better! Again, use whatever you have on hand, instant or regular.

4. Mix it until just combined. You don’t really want to dissolve anything.

5. And this is what the finished scrub looks like.

Coffee face scrub for oily skin

Here, mine is way more runny than it should be (because I tipped the coffee vessel way more than I should have). You’re looking to get a paste, not a slushy liquid. Although I do agree that the latter looks prettier. 😛 Now use this scrub just like you would any other scrub. Gentle circular motions on a wet face, for about 2 minutes, and then wash off with water or wipe off with damp cotton rounds.

Now that you have your freshly scrubbed face, you can do this banana follow-up. I normally do this scrub, do this banana follow-up, and then use my moisturizer (I use Emolene, currently on my third tube now). If you don’t have dry skin, you may find you don’t need any moisturizer after doing the banana follow-up. This is also very simple, and uses only two ingredients.

1. Take a small piece of banana. Darn that pesky fly! It must be ripe, and a bit overripe is good too. Another reason to love this follow-up – you actually have a good reason to eat more bananas! 😀 So here, I have eaten half of a small banana (and 4 other full ones, but that’s not relevant) and have put the other half that got away into a bowl. I have heard that banana is very moisturizing for skin and hair. I haven’t been brave enough to try it on my hair yet, but I have tried it on my skin this way, and I absolutely love the results! 🙂

2. Mash it really well with a fork, and add some honey to it. Honey is a very popular ingredient in face masks and face scrubs. It has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. It helps clear up blemishes and makes skin soft.

3. Mix it up, and you’re done! It’s that simple. You will get a lumpy mixture like the one I have below. This tiny piece of banana actually yielded so much of the mask, that I used some of it on my Dad as well (and yes, he did grumble about being my guinea pig etc.)

Now after using the scrub and patting my face dry, I smoosh this on my face and neck and leave it on till it begins to dry. You don’t want to leave it on till it dries fully. Once it starts to dry out, wipe it off with facial wipes, cotton rounds or a towel dipped in hot water. Then splash your face with water to get all the remaining banana mash off your face.

I normally apply moisturizer after this, but you can skip it if you don’t think your face needs it.
I do this about twice a week, if there are any bananas left in the kitchen that I haven’t gobbled up yet. 😀
Try this and see how soft your skin becomes. It doesn’t get easier than this!

  1. Great article samantha! and the perfect day to come up with it…. i love doing DIYs on sunday and will surely do it asap!!!

  2. i use baking soda as face mask/scrub twice a week and it removes my blackheads like magic!! i’ll add coffee to it next time 😀 thanks for this simple DIY samantha <3 <3

    1. Baking soda is truly wonderful as an exfoliant! I don’t have any blackheads, so I’ve always wondered whether what they say about it removing blackheads is true. Now I know it is! 🙂
      You’re welcome, Tinkerbell 😀

    1. Thank you, Rati! 🙂 You can also add in some almond oil, olive oil or cream (works very well if you have intensely dry skin like I have on my nose. Flaky skin sucks 🙁 ). Peanut butter works too, in tiny quantities. Sounds weird, but works for me. 😀
Make sure to use natural peanut butter only, because it’s the only kind I use on my face that doesn’t break me out. Regular pb will break me out.
Even plain banana works, but it’s not as moisturizing.

    1. The coffee scrub will work well for you, even though you have oily skin.
As for the banana, use it without adding anything to it. Just mash it up, and use it on your face. And then wipe your face with a cloth dipped in warm water.
      Thank you 🙂

  3. This is such a super recipe, Samantha! If it wasn’t for the honey, I’d have even tried to lick it. 😛 I am going to try it soon. 😀

  4. greatt article!!! i will try this one out in winter time since my skin is really dry during that time 🙂
