COSMETIC MAKEOVERS IN DENTISTRY

Through IMBB and all of you, I have really learned a lot. Although I am still not good with makeup yet but wanted to share something I am good at-dentistry. Yes, I am a dentist practicing in Delhi .

Cosmetic procedures have gained so much importance in dentistry and the reason i attribute to it is that not all of your features can be fixed but your smile can be fixed!!! I believe no one should shy away from smiling. So, i am sharing a cosmetic dentistry procedure most sought after. There are more that i may share in the future.

VENEERS AND LAMINATES :-

I have dealt with patients(not many though as i have just started) having inferiority complex due to unattractive smile/unattractive front teeth. Well, for many of them , veneers were the answer.
A veneer is a wafer thin layer of restorative material placed over the teeth. It is made up of porcelain.

When do you require a porcelain veneer/laminate:-
1. Intrinsic stain in teeth that cannot be removed by scaling or dental bleaching ( like fluoride stain or congenital staining of teeth i.e since birth
2. Chipped off or slightly fractured teeth
3. Crooked teeth with sharp edges or minor misalignment (major mal alignments are corrected by wearing braces)
4. Gummy smile-if you show too much of your gums while smiling
5. Too large/ short teeth or widening a narrow smile
6. Gap between front teeth especially the central ones

THE PROCEDURE :
A little from your teeth is removed (its a non drilling procedure), impression is made and the material fabrication is done in the laboratory. You can get them placed in your next visit, procedure doesnโ€™t take much time. The shade and shape selection of veneer is done according to rest of your teeth(if they are not stained/disformed) and your facial features. Also taken into consideration is the SPA factor-Sex, Personality, Age.

THE RESULT :
Happy smiling faces. You can expect your veneers to last for years and they do resemble natural teeth if done correctly.

EXPENSES : depends on how many teeth you wana get done. Anterior teeth comprise of 6 upper and 6 lower teeth. They may cost anywhere between rs.2000-10,000

MY VERDICT:

A smile plays an important role in grooming the overall look. You should love the way you are but still if few things can be fixed under experts, donโ€™t shy away to get them done. Cosmetic dentistry is really emerging like anything but always choose the best dentist as there are many quacks in the market. Look for their degree, a minimum BDS degree should be mentioned. Discuss with clearly with your doc what you want to achieve and let him/her make you go through the entire procedure before you start. Many dentists keep before and after pics which is a good practice so that you can see the difference.

Wish you loads of reasons to smile..as IMBB has become one of the reasons for me to smile .

  1. Hi Shai,

I wanted to get my braces done. I’m looking for lingual braces. I’m in my 28. Can you help me with some info.

    1. hi Kaps
well the lingual braces have one limitation that they can be used only to correct lower teeth..if u have mal alignment with respect to upper n lower set of teeth then u ll have to look for other options-ceramic braces is one of them ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I used to wear braces during school days but then you have to wear the retainers for a long time. My teeth came in perfect condition but then i got lazy with wearing retainers. And my upper teeth relapsed. :(( I am back to wearing retainers so hopefully this time my teeth would be in perfect condition a few months down the line. ๐Ÿ˜€

Any tips on how the teeth can be retained to their same position after the procedure. i sometimes feel i would have to wear retainers all my life. :headbang:

      1. yeah relapsing is something very common if patients dont wear retainers as instructed..good that u have started wearin them again..do as your doc has instructed ๐Ÿ™‚ yeah me in delhi..stay at delhi cantt..n have my clinic in dwarka ๐Ÿ™‚

          1. wow..that will be great..but i wish n hope u dont meet me for any teeth trouble..wish u stay in best of health

    1. i am wearing retainers too :(( already broke 2 pairs of ’em…am ordering the third. if i don’t wear them the little gap emerges. maybe its to be worn a long long time . taking care of retainers is such a pain in ***

      1. you should wear retainers straightaway after your braces removal..if you hv missed get back to doc n wear them as instructed..braces is a costly treatment n no1 would want teeth condition to relapse..there are few procedures that require retainers for lifetime

    1. sure Ansh..i ll try to keep it basic in the next article..or if there’s something specific then u can mail me ๐Ÿ™‚

but Bee u look damn good..go for it only if it bothers u..there’s also something called composite veneers..those are instant..single visit..best for such kinda gaps ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. hey shaili could ya please do a post on whitening teeth ? i want to visit the dentist for this but my mum discourages me. pleaseee

  4. Hello shaili.
I had retainers around 2-3 years back and the doctor had given a complimentary whitening session along with it. But lately my teeth has started staining a deep yellow again. I have heard frequent whitening sessions tend to corrupt the teeth. Is it true? Because both my teeth and gums are extremely sensitive and sometimes I face the bleeding of gums too. Please suggest what can I do for my situation. Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. mild sensitivity is common after bleaching/whitening procedure which subsides on its own. Since you have had whitening done 3 years back, you can get it done again..thats really not frequent but visit a good doc cuz there are many whitening agents provided by various companies..from cheapest to the best. A good doc will retract your gums before the procedure.
and regarding your bleeding gums..i need some details before answering it

  5. hi.. i had braces for about 2 years but got lazy with the retainers. And as a result my teeth have relapsed. But now when i think of putting them back on it starts hurting my teeth after sometime. Should I get it loosen or anything?

    1. i tell you a li’l secret..if ur periodontium i.e gums and surrounding tissues are healthy, you can have braces at any age only the treatment duration will vary
and 17 comes under ideal age..so dont worry..only if ur wisdom teeth are erupting, they might require necessary treatment (i.e to keep them or extract them as they are the commonest cause for relapse)

  6. wow……what a great article Shaii…..My seven year old is in a phase which his dentist calls an “ugly duckling phase”. He has big gaps in his teeth but the dentist has asked us to wait. Do u think waiting till he grows up more is a good idea? hould we take him to another dentist?

    1. Ugly duckling stage is a self correcting anamoly Monika..it happnes due to eruption pattern of permanent canine teeth (the sharpest one) and yes it is transitory and generally subsides by the age of 12-13 yrs..if it persists after that, then only ur kid might require dental corrections.
take care ๐Ÿ™‚ and thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Hi Shaili…great article…well done  My front two teeth were like ‘bunny teeth’, which always troubled me (psychologically) when i smiled! I got the laminates treatment done around a year back. It made a huge difference to my smile, but still I feel that I havent been able to get the ‘straight’ look. From a side profile, one can still see the two teeth protruding a bit. Do you think I can get further treatment done on my teeth? Im a bit skeptical about them turning too sensitive if I get repeated treatments done. Pls advise.
    And…keep up the good work!

  8. I loved your article and its been of great help, thanks ๐Ÿ™‚ I do have a issue with my teeth and smile. My teeth werent perfect since ever, but i hated wearing braces during my school days so i did nothing, but as i grew up i realized they spoil my overall look and expressions :/ I’m 18 now and an year ago i visited a dentist to get em fixed but they look worse :(( im very upset. I dont have much knowledge about this stuff so that doctor fooled me, he did fix something like veeners ( he called it bridge work..?) but my teeth look bigger than before ( the front 4), they do not match with the rest of the teeth, are a bit outwards and look odd, more than that their root is sort of dark black. I spent a lot, he made me pay 12,000rs and when i complained about the darkness of the gums he said it will be fine with time. Its been one year now and no change. Please help me ๐Ÿ™ I would be really grateful, or you can contact me on my email directly. I could do anything to have a good smile again.
