How to Apply:

1. If desired, curl eyelashes before applying mascara.
2. Use Step 1 of the mascara wand and apply one coat of the extreme volume basecoat to top lashes.
3. Use Step 2 of the mascara wand and apply the intensifying top coat on top of the extreme volume basecoat. For a more dramatic look, apply a second coat.
4. Remove with Clean Makeup Remover for Eyes & Lips. Apply with a cotton ball and gently swipe eye makeup away.
COVERGIRL’s Bombshell mascara wears like a waterproof mascara and as such, should be removed with an oil-based makeup remover product for best results.

My take on Covergirl Bombshell Volume by LashBlast Mascara in Very Black 800:

The Covergirl Bombshell Volume by LashBlast Mascara was supposedly the next best thing in mascaras, as advertised by Covergirl. The advertisement for this mascara features Sofia Vergara and is really impressive. Well, obviously, most mascara ads have the models wearing falsies, but I was still impressed enough to want to give it a try!

Recently, Covergirl ran into a controversy when a woman claimed on national television that she had used this mascara and while removing it, her eye lashes came out in clumps! Can you imagine the horror?! This is not the only complaint about how hard it is to remove this mascara. You can find many, many such complaints all over the internet! I had bought this mascara over 5 months ago, when I was not aware of all this controversy and had not used it until the past month. But then, there was a part of me which said that if the mascara really gives me the “bombshell volume” it promises, maybe I should try it out? Especially since I had already bought it!

Packaging: The Covergirl Bombshell Volume mascara comes in a thick bold bright pink tube. This is a two-step mascara. There are two different wands and formula on either side of the mascara tube. You get 20 ml of the product in total, as compared to the usual less-than-10 ml of the regular mascaras. So in effect, you are getting twice the quantity.

Step 1: As per the directions, one coat of the extreme volume basecoat is to be applied to the top lashes. This is the side marked with a big ‘1’ on the tube. This brush is really thick and big and is a rubber-bristle brush, with multiple tiny bristles all over. This really helps in applying the mascara without clumping. It separates the lashes nicely and lengthens them. The mascara formula on this side is kind of wet. This is actually supposed to be the volumizing basecoat but I do not fine it adding much volume at all! Length – yes, but volume – no. But I like the look this step provides. There is no clumping and if not volume, at least I get long and separated lashes.

Step 2: As per the directions, one or two coats of the intensifying top coat are to be applied on top of the extreme volume basecoat. This is the side marked with a big ‘2’ on the tube. This brush is a smaller brush as can be found in a more traditional mascara. The mascara formula here is a bit dry. This intensifying top coat is supposed to add a more dramatic, false lash effect. I have tried it multiple times, but I find that it always clumps on me. All the nice separation of Step 1 is lost and my lashes stick to each other and form groups of lashes! I find that this step adds quite a bit of volume to the lashes, but the clumping totally ruins it for me.

The good thing is that the mascara stays through the day, without smudging or flaking. But coming to the feature which caused all the controversy – I do find that this mascara is a bit difficult to get off as compared to the regular waterproof mascaras. And this one does not even claim to be waterproof. I guess that might be the cause for all the controversy. Since it does not claim to be waterproof, people are not so careful while trying to take this off. But the formula is really difficult to come out with regular removers. You definitely need an oil-based make up remover to get this out. You also need quite a bit of patience to get this out completely! But it does come out without ripping off your lashes!

Another problem I would like to point out is that this mascara comes with two wands, and is longer than the regular mascaras, but still not long enough to provide regular sized wands. So both the wands are quite short, which makes it difficult to apply mascara without poking your eyes!

Covergirl has responded to the controversy with trying to spread the word regarding how it is to be removed via their website and their YouTube channel! They are also changing the packaging of this mascara shortly to include these instructions!

Pros of Covergirl Bombshell Volume by LashBlast Mascara in Very Black 800:

• Two step mascara for adding extreme volume
• Step 1 provides good length and lash separation
• Step 1 causes no clumping
• Step 2 adds substantial volume
• Lasts through the day with no flaking or smudging

Cons of Covergirl Bombshell Volume by LashBlast Mascara in Very Black 800:

• Step 1, which is the extreme volume basecoat, does not actually add any volume
• Step 2 causes a lot of clumping and causes lashes to group together
• The wand size is quite short, which makes application difficult
• Removal of this mascara requires an oil-based makeup remover and lots of patience!

IMBB Rating: 3/5

Recommendation: This mascara has both positives and negatives. I like the end result of Step 1 – well separated lengthy lashes with no clumps. But step 2 causes too much of clumping, though it does add a lot of volume. It is not worth getting this mascara just for Step 1, as you would get the same effect with the original Covergirl LashBlast mascara. Unless you can find a way of preventing clumps with Step 2, this can be skipped!
