CoverGirl TruMagic Skin Perfector Mattifier Soft Touch Balm Review

Hello gals,

Hope all of you are doing fine! Today, I am here to share another latest purchase from Covergirl. I heard a lot about skin primers aka balms which were first introduced by ELF and kudos to ELF for such innovative product which seems a blessing for oily skin beauties. Sadly I could not try the ELF skin primer balm; but when I noticed a similar product in Covergirl I had to try it 😉

CoverGirl launched three skin perfectors lately; the bronzer, the highlighter and the clear balm respectively. And I own their clear balm skin perfector which seems decent for oily, combination skin as it claims to blur wrinkles, open pores and other skin problematic areas. Well, I won’t say that this is the best product for oily skin though it worked fine for me throughout my Oregon trip. To be frank, I am still not convinced if I really need this balm in my life. So here I come to share my good & bad experience with you all about this new soft touch balm. Let’s read further to know more about Covergirl Tru Magic Skin Perfector Mattifier Soft Touch Balm!

Product description: A revolutionary skin-perfecting balm! truMAGIC offers a touch of magic without adding makeup in just one swipe and is available in three fabulous finishes. Use it alone as a mattifier, under makeup as a primer, over makeup to complete your look, or as a skin refresher throughout the day.

My Experience with Covergirl Tru Magic Skin Perfector Mattifier Soft Touch Balm:

Covergirl skin mattifier balm comes in transparent plastic compact packaging with flip top opening. I wonder why they had to provide sponge applicator but no place to keep it inside packaging and I have to put it over balm which seems unhygienic to me. I like this solid facial balm product which seems working fine as a skin primer however we do have many great skin primers and balms in the market now days!

The balm looks like clear solid wax in compact which gives velvet powdery finish on my skin sweeping away oil off my skin instantly. I like its sponge applicator which works fine for my oily & sensitive skin, I just need to dab it on my oily T- zone and cheek to get rid of excess shine before and after makeup. However, it works decent as a primer unlike using over foundation because I find it slightly tricky while using over foundation. I didn’t find it great as a primer on my skin since I can see film of oil after 5-6 hours on the skin even when we were staying in a high snowfall area unlike summers!

Though I did feel it did make my skin shine free and blurred my open pores for some hours but so does my Urban Decay Naked Skin UD loose powder. Moreover, I also own primer from Dr Brandt which works better than this solid clear balm though Dr Brandt primer is slight pricey that former clear balm. But I won’t mind shelling extra 10 bucks for great results because Covergirl clear balm is not very cheap either!

Anyway, I am happy that the product did not cause any break outs on my skin neither did it accentuate any other issues on my skin. I just felt that it disappoints slightly being a primer or skin perfector, since I noticed only 4-5 hours of decent matte skin, my skin felt slight slippery and not soft or smooth. To sum it, up I didn’t see any significant difference before and after using this primer on my skin especially with my Urban Decay Naked UD loose finishing powder which alone works great on my skin and takes care of all problem areas. I mean, using it alone over moisturizer just seems to be not working for me.

It’s just that the soft balm prepped up my skin for smooth finish makeup but then it won’t increase staying power of makeup at all. Over all I don’t think I would get it again though it seems decent for combination, oily skin beauties on a budget!

Let’s sum up pros and cons:

Pros of Covergirl Tru Magic Skin Perfector Mattifier Soft Touch Balm:

A decent clear soft balm which gives instant matte skin
It works fine on oily, sensitive skin for decent 4-5 hours keeping oil at bay
It does not clog pores or cause any break outs which makes it good enough for oily, combination with acne prone skin as well
It does not accentuate oily skin issues either
It does blur our oily skin imperfections like open pores, uneven skin tone etc, for decent hours
It preps our skin to smooth canvas for further make over
It can be considered decent primer for oily, combination skin with or without problematic skin
It gives soft powdery velvet finish to skin which does not accentuate ageing skin issues either
Travel-friendly packaging which comes with sponge applicator that works great for my skin.

Cons of Covergirl Tru Magic Skin Perfector Mattifier Soft Touch Balm:

• They forgot to make a place for sponge applicator in their packaging .
• I could hardly notice any significant difference before and after using primer on my skin especially on bare skin, followed by my Urban Decay naked skin UD loose powder .
• It won’t increase staying power of our makeup other than instantly mattifying and prepping up skin for makeover though.
• I noticed only 4-5 hours of matte skin there by needing touch ups to get rid of shine.
• It makes our skin look and feel slippery instead of being soft & smooth after few hours.
• It does contain parabens.

IMBB rating:
Well, I found it decent and workable for small occasions like shopping or a small get together as it instantly soaks oil off our skin though I cannot rely alone on this clear balm for a long duration especially for night parties or hang outs. Probably, it would work for young combination, oily skin unlike excessive oily skin ageing beauties. I am not willing to get it again. I will
rate it 2.5/5!

  1. wow neetu lovely pics
though yes, the sponge I would not use and keep it back like that on the balm :/ great review

  3. Nice review as always neetu…I think neutrogena oil control primer and powder are the best for oily skin beauties from drugstore..loved your pics neetu..

  4. Love the pictures where you and your daughter are lying on the snow! Very cute <3
    The boiling mud pot WOW!!
This seems like an average product. I can imagine how it wouldn't help at all in the summers if it doesn't even work well in a snowy area!

    1. yes abhinaya it didnt work in winters so summers seem kinda tricky :/
