Demeter Fragrance Library: Chocolate Covered Cherries and Incense Perfume Review

Demeter Fragrance Library

Introduction to Demeter:

Demeter believes that our strongest emotional responses are to our sense of smell, especially for scents based on real objects—like a favorite cocktail or flower. Because of this, they have created a collection of single-note and single-experience fragrances that not only smell good, but also have the ability to conjure up personal memories tied to their distinct aromas. (From Sephora.com)

When I discovered this New York, USA-based brand, whose fragrances range from foody scents (they have Brownie, Cinnamon Toast, Chamomile Tea, and Hershey’s Kisses, among others) to stranger ones (Glue, Sushi, Paint, Mildew!), I was pretty fascinated.

I loved the idea of bottling up the scents of certain objects which I associate with distinct memories or emotions. To some it may seem weird to wear these scents as perfumes, but I wear perfume mostly for myself, and I like complementing or changing my mood with the scent I wear for the day.

They have a huge selection of scents on their website, demeterfragrance.com, and I took my time browsing, but finally, I settled on a sample collection based on cartoon characters, and from the general catalogue, Chocolate Covered Cherries and Incense.

Demeter Chocolate Covered Cherry Cologne

I got Chocolate Covered Cherries because I just love gourmand scents, even though in actual, chocolate-covered cherries aren’t on the list of my favourite desserts. I do love chocolate though, and at the time of purchase, I was craving a rich, warm, delicious, sweet chocolatey scent. Something I could pick up and sniff, instead of eating the real thing, every time I craved some sugary confection.

This scent from Demeter doesn’t disappoint. Sniffing it on my arm is just like putting a delectable chocolate-covered cherry to my nose, fresh from the box and about to be bitten into. I can smell rich chocolate and liquor, mixing with a sweet, syrupy cherry. I almost want to bite into my arm when I smell this fragrance. Lovely, sweet, warm, and just what I was looking for. I thought though, that the perfume would satisfy my appetite for chocolate, but now I want to eat it more than ever!

Demeter Incense Pick-Me-Up Cologne

The other fragrance I picked up was Incense, which I wanted because I find the smell of incense quite calming. I should have read the description for it more thoroughly, because it’s not the typical incense smell, but a different take on it. What I smell is a creamy, rich blend of amber, resin, and vanilla, much sweeter and thicker, and actually very different from the usual frankincense smell of incense. It’s not what I expected, but it’s a nice interpretation nonetheless. It is rich and strong and would make for a comforting cold-weather scent.

Sample sizes are available for each fragrance, in half ounce splash bottles made of glass, and these were the sizes I selected, as seen in the photos above. I’m glad for these as they are affordable at $6 each and are a fun way to try out Demeter’s scents. Larger sizes with spray tops, and bath, body and home products in the same scents are sold on the website as well.

One possible con to the Demeter fragrances is that the lasting power of most of the scents tends to be weaker than of department store perfumes. Demeter calls their fragrances not Eau de toilettes or Eau de parfums, but pick-me-up colognes. Incense and Chocolate Covered Cherries stick around for about three hours, but this is okay with me as I don’t mind reapplying. Perhaps the idea is to wear as many of their pick-me-up colognes as you want within a day. With their long list of fascinating scents, this shouldn’t be a problem.

    1. Hi Anuya, the ones I got are $6 each or around Rs. 270. I got so excited though when I was browsing that I bought directly from their website, demeterfragrances.com. But their international shipping costs a lot! They’re also available thru one of my favorite places to shop for perfume- Duty Free. Though am not sure all Duty Free shops carry them. And in the US in many department stores.

  1. Thanks Scarlett! :)) 😀 The half ounce sizes are like their sample size already…it’s the smallest size they have. They are really cute in person. And smell good too 😉 😉

  2. Nivedita, thanks, and sorry! :shutmouth: Actually after reading my own review I went to the fridge myself to look for something sweet, haha! 😀 I’m craving for some Cadbury chocolate or something…but I just ate grapes instead…

    1. But this morning when I woke up I just had to have a little bar of chocolate. I can understand your apprehension about online shopping. My mom is the same. 🙂 It’s quite different from shopping at an actual store, but is also fun in its own way. 🙂 🙂

    1. Thanks Jinal, sorry though. :(( Actually outside the US they’re really not so accessible, is why I just went ahead and ordered online.

      I’m also crazy about perfume…not that it’s obvious. 😉
