So, as I promised, the DIY serum. When going the no-poo way, you cannot use oils as baking soda will fail to remove any oil from your hair. I was a little disappointed by this as I love oiling my hair. Then I found this serum which uses one of the best oils ever. Can you guess it? It’s argan oil. It is less oily compared to other oils.
• 30 ml Argan oil
• 10 drops of essential oils (each)
So, argan oil is a little expensive but it works wonders for your hair and it is worth the investment. While being used as a serum, it will require only a small amount. So, it will last you a long time.
Benefits of argan oil:
• It tames split ends and frizzy hair. It actually repairs split ends. I still use it after I shampoo my hair. It also gets rid of the dry feeling in your hair.
• It can also be used to style your hair. It provides shine to your hair.
• It increases your hair growth.
You can add desired essential oils to make your own kind of serum. I have used rosemary and lavender. I ordered a set which consisted of argan oil, rosemary essential oil and a nozzle spray. I just had to add the essential oil to the argan oil bottle and replace the cap with the spray provided and voila! I had my serum. The nozzle provides me with adequate amount in one spray. It couldn’t get better. Store the argan oil in dark bottles otherwise the ingredients may disintegrate in light.
I will list out the different essential oils you can use, their functions and other essential oils which complement argan oil.
Lavender essential oil
It helps balance natural scalp oils. This property makes it valuable for all hair types. With its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and analgesic properties, lavender oil is a good treatment for dry, flaky scalp. It soothes and nourishes the scalp, providing relief from inflammatory scalp conditions. Regular massage with lavender oil is said to reduce hair loss and make the hair soft and shiny. Lavender oil has a mild sedative and antidepressant action which makes it useful to ease down nervous tension and stress-related conditions.
Scent: a sweet, floral scent and herbaceous-woody undertone
Blends well with: citrus and floral oils; also cedarwood, vetiver and patchouli
Vetiver (Khus) essential oil
It has the ability to calm, cool, and soothe the mind and body. This cooling property makes it highly beneficial in hair loss (as in against hair loss) that occurs due to high body heat (pitta body constitution). It is also a useful remedy for acne and oily skin. Deeply relaxing, this essential oil is an ideal addition in massage oil and bath.
Scent: earthy-woody odour and a sweet persistent undertone
Blends well with: sandalwood, lavender, ylang ylang, jasmine and patchouli
Rosemary essential oil
I wasn’t sure about this oil at all. But I love it. It has growth enhancing properties and is good in treating dandruff and itchiness. It is said to improve memory and alertness.
Scent: it has a minty-herbaceous smell with a woody undertone.
Blends well with: lavender, basil, thyme and cinnamon
Chamomile essential oil
It, again, has similar properties as of rosemary. It highlights blonde hair and adds a sheen to dark hair.
Scent: sweet, fruity scent
Blends with: lavender, jasmine, rose geranium
Ylang ylang essential oil
It is one of the best essential oils for hair. It has combined properties of rosemary and lavender.
Scent: sweet, floral and slightly spicy scent
Blends with: jasmine, rose and vetiver
Pick your essential oil according to your nose and requirements. And use the serum wisely. If you use an oil to treat dandruff then apply the serum on your scalp as well otherwise restrict its use to your hair only.
