How to Make Heat Protection Spray at Home

Hello lovelies,

It has been so long since I last wrote a review for anything on IMBB, but I was just busy with college. Anyway, I recently got a haircut. A bad one, if I may say so. I was really inspired by all the short hair/lob (long bob) styles that everyone around the world has been carrying. And, since I was so sure of what I wanted, I just went to a parlor and explained it to the hairstylist.

Unfortunately, she gave me a blunt cut with shoulder length. I cannot explain it properly, but all in all, it wasn’t that great and definitely not what I had expected. A quick tip for all of you out there, go to a professional and discus all the details about your haircut, like if it will suit you or for more options that you can try and definitely how to maintain it.

The solution for this disaster for me was to straighten my hair each time I wash it. I have slightly wavy hair, straight at the top and starts getting wavy from my ears down. So, I went out and got a heat protection spray for every time I use a flat iron on my hair. I started wondering how heat protectants really work. So, I looked up a bit and found out that heat protectants basically provide moisture to your hair.

They also contain Silicones(Cyclomethicone and Dimethicone) which coat your hair and provide protection from the heat. These two are found in most conditioners as well. So, I figured I would try and make my own heat protection spray.

DIY Heat Protection Spray

Sorry for such a long intro, lets get into the DIY!

What You Require:

DIY Heat Protection Spray

An Empty Spray Bottle – 50 ml
Coconut oil and/or Almond oil – 1 to 2 drops each
Hair Conditioner (preferably containing the above mentioned Silicones) – 2 Dime size amount
Water – To fill the rest of the spray bottle

How To Use It:

1. Fill the spray bottle with water almost to the top.
2. Add coconut oil, almond oil and conditioner in the bottle.
3. Fill the remaining part of the bottle with water.
4. Shake the bottle well.

Don’t worry if the water turns milky, it is because of the conditioner that we had put in. And, there you have it, your own heat protection spray.

Note: I added a pump of leave in conditioner in it too because my conditioner didn’t mention the second silicone. It is not compulsory.

Usage:

You can use it just like you would use any other heat protection spray that you have in your dresser. I personally spray it on semi damp hair, before I blow dry it. Also, don’t forget to condition your hair after you shampoo.

I prefer this to any of the store bought heat protection sprays since this is cheaper and I know what exactly I am putting on my hair.

Please do try it and let me know how it worked for you.

  1. I’m running out of my current heat protectant and this too easy to do 😀 Yay so wanna try 🙂 Thanks Spandana.

  2. thanks a lot this DIY was very useful….i just have a doubt though….
Don’t you think using regular in-shower conditioners are meant to be rinsed off and not to leave it on hair…. so wouldn’t it be advisable to not use it in making this heat protecting spray?

I would personally prefer to use leave-in conditioner than regular conditioners as they may cause buildup and lead to hair fall on longer term use.

    1. It will not create as much build up because we are diluting it. But the leave in condition or works as well. And also both the silicones are generally easily found in the leave in conditionors. 🙂

  3. I like how you made it Spandana. I love my hair too much and I literally shiver even if I go for trimmings. Also, I too get tempted to try out a Lob at times, but then I realise how much I’ll regret cutting my hair. 😛

    1. Thank you Shikha 🙂
I used to avoid the parlor as much as I could. But then I really wanted a change for way too long.
Now that my hair is short I’ve been wanting it to be long again but I’m sure once it grows out I’ll probably go to a professional and get a better haircut. 😀
