DIY Lip Colour Tutorial

DIY Lip Colour

Hi girls, YouTube is full of tutorials on Do It Yourself lip colours. I got inspired by some last night and tried my hand at the techniques. What I wanted to do was to see if I can salvage some lip colours that I never used. I was satisfied (not happy) with the results and tried to do something again today and this time, I did pics for you guys. I also added little touches of my own. So read on to see what I did!
• Task: Create your own lip colour
• Difficulty Level: Easy
• Time Needed: One Hour (Includes assembling and cleaning time)
• Stuff Needed:
o Vaseline / Plain Chapstick
o Old lip balm pots / Contact lens case
o Rubbing Alcohol / Sanitiser
o Lipsticks / Eye shadow / Blush that no longer get love from you
o Sweet Almond Oil
o Vanilla Essence
o Cotton / Paper Towels
o Q-tip / Toothpick / Spatula / Spoon
All right then, I started with washing my lens case

To sanitise the case take some rubbing alcohol on cotton / q-tip and rub the case with it. I didn’t have rubbing alcohol so I took my regular hand sanitiser in a cotton swab.

Ignore the lip colour on my nails! This work gets messy 🙁 I then rubbed the case with it thoroughly. Do not forget the cover.

If you have been reading this (and not just looking at the pictures like I sometimes do!) you’d know that I made a batch last night. This is what it looked like.

The berry colour turned out gorgeous but the brown was so meh! I am basically trying to turn that brown into something else here. But how did I get to the brown? I microwaved a small amount of Vaseline and an old brown lipstick till the two melted and stirred it up nicely. Then placed the case in the freezer for 5 minutes to set! This is basically what all general tutorials will tell you. As you can see the case is all messy. This is because I let the liquid boil in the microwave and it spilled over. Make sure that when you are doing this method, you microwave it in intervals of 10 sec and do not let it boil. Boiling will alter the chemical composition of your lip colour and can change texture too. Also, your contact lens case is not microwave safe. 10 -20 sec is ok but you can not let in there for a long time. So, getting back to where we were. A fresh case is sanitized and awaiting its contents. Let spoon some of the brown colour into it, shall we? I used a q-tip for this.

Now I have this makeup palette that has compacts which are the wrong shade for me, lip colours that don’t suit me and eye shadows that I don’t use. So, I whipped it out and decided to use the colours.

The colours may look gorgeous but they have a poor payoff and crease badly. Besides, there is a lot of product in here and I don’t use all that much eye shadow. So, I took some of the peach from bottom left triad and scraped it using the back of a steel spoon. You can use a disposable plastic knife or a spatula for this too. Again, remember to sanitise it!

diy lipstick

I mixed them up and swatched. Remember to swatch every time you change the colour to know where you are going with the intensity, payoff and texture.

diy lipstick

This was thick and not shiny at all. I added a few drops of sweet almond oil to add some gloss and change the texture. You could use castor oil too. I’d have preferred that if I had any handy.

I then kept playing with colour. I added more peach, some white, some pink and some light pink-beige to get a colour I liked. Once I had the colour, I added some more oil and 2 drops of vanilla essence to it. This was to primarily mask the synthetic smell my original brown lipstick had.

It looked like a gooey mess in the container! See for yourself.

So, I microwaved this for just 5 sec till it settled down evenly. Then, pop into the freezer for ten mins and voila!

The tiny bubbles are due to the vanilla essence. If you skip that, you’ll get a very evenly set product. I also cleaned up the case with a cotton ball. Trust me, it was MESSY!!!
And this is what the final thing looks like. Left is a single stroke and right is 3 strokes.

I didn’t get a decent lip swatch because Kuhu woke up by this time, so I’ll share what I have

diy lipstick

I have been wearing it for the last 3 hours and here are my initial thoughts –
1. It is very very moisturizing because of the Vaseline and almond oil in it.
2. The application goes a little streaky. You have to be very careful with it. Also, it will not stay put without a liner.
3. The pigmentation is really under your control and hence you can choose if you want it sheer or richly pigmented. Because I added a powder as pigment, my product was not creamy at all. It did leave a powdery feel. I’d love to add some shea butter in this for the creamyness!
4. It fades away really quickly. On my lips, it stayed perfect for abt 30 mins and then started to fade. After 3 hours, all that was left behind was a colour stain and incredible softness!

So what do you think? Have any of you tried making your own lip colour?

  1. hahahaa awesome!!! but i iit safe to have eyeshadows in lip products? ui mean if they get into mouth?? ?:) ?:) ?:)

    1. neha, i did quite a bit of research before trying this out… no one mentioned that eyeshadow is not safe. Besides, you take just a pinch or two for the entire tub of lip gloss… that means a very small amount wud go on your lip on every application. However, if you are worried, you could use a lip safe pigment (MAC, I suppose?) or use natural colouring agents like saffron, dried beetroot powder etc…

  2. Nice Anks…thats creative 🙂

@Neha i think its safe…ive read about using eyeshadow on lips b4…like u put on a clear gloss first then take ur lip brush and apply eyeshadow on top of the gloss and then seal it with a clear gloss again.. 🙂

  3. :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot:

    1. you know mrun, the first time i too boiled it… then realised you just need to melt it.. boiling is a big no no… best wud be to keep it at a warm place in the room during summers or direct sun for 10 odd minutes… they’d melt on their own!

hee hee.. i see posts when am in a hurry…. 🙂

  8. Hey a couple of tips as a fellow DIY lover,

Avoid using vanilla essence, i know it is lovely , but the water in it will greatly reduce the strength of your final product.

You can use some concealer or cream blush in this experiment.

Do not use both vaseline and almond oil in one experiment , unless you are looking to make a gloss.

If mixing any powder in your lipstick, first mix the powder in oil or vaseline, this avoids lumps, and makes mixing easier , also reduces the powdery feeling.

Let me know how it goes… Goodluck with DIY

  9. Wow supriya… these are good! thanks… i realised the error of vanilla essence too… it didn’t mix… next time, I’ll just use an essential oil… the vaseline and almond oil were supposed to make it glossy and moisturising.. but my product was not very glossy… 🙁

    :thanks: for the tips!
