Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega Mushroom Skin Relief Lotion Review

Hey Guys,

Today, I wanted to share some of my thoughts on Origins Mega Mushroom Treatment Lotion on IMBB. Although, the product is called a “treatment lotion,” it’s basically a toner and is meant for use between one’s washing and moisturizing routine. Frankly, this is hands-down one of the most effective toners I have ever used, and I am quite excited to be reviewing this for you.

Product Background and Description:

Created by Dr. Andrew Weil, Mega Mushroom Skin Relief Lotion is sold and distributed by Origins, a popular natural cosmetics retailer. Weil, a Harvard-trained medical doctor, is a well-known advocate of Ayurveda in the West.  Supercool right? Through his holistic approach to medicine, he has created a number of products that use the best natural ingredients. What’s even more awesome is that Weil donates all after-tax profits from his products to his foundation that does research on integrative medicine.

According to the Origins, this “extra-light” toner “features Dr. Andrew Weil’s famed Mega-Mushroom blend.” It “soothes, comforts and hydrates skin. Narcissus Lily Bulb helps defend skin against silent skin agers. Skin looks and feels healthier, more supple and refreshed,” and is “great for sensitive and reactive skin.”

Key Ingredients:

The toner’s key ingredients are: Tonic Mushrooms, Sea Buckhorn, Ginger, Holy Basil and Turmeric.

Price:

$30 (Approximately Rs. 1650) for 6.7 oz./ 200 ml.

My Experience with Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega Mushroom Skin Relief Lotion:

I am a big fan of Dr. Weil’s skin products line for Origins and decided to incorporate this toner into my skin care routine. There is some confusion regarding the use of this product because of its name and instructions for application (which suggest either applying with a cotton ball, toner style, or patting it on, pretty much like a lotion). According to the folks at Origins, this is a toner, so as a toner I have used it thus far. For reference, I have combination, acne-prone skin and I generally keep away from products that are formulated exclusively for dry skin or acne.

Mega Mushroom Lotion 3

I like to pat this toner on my face, like guys pat on aftershave, after I wash my face. This product has a really soothing smell and feels cool and refreshing on the skin. It dries up in less than a minute, and unlike other toners, it doesn’t make the skin feel dry. Rather, it makes it feel soft, supple and hydrated. This is because the toner contains no alcohol, a prominent ingredient in almost all toners on the market today. Instead, it contains ingredients like ginger, turmeric (haldi) and holy thai basil (tulsi); all ingredients that have been used by desis for thousands of years for healing purposes.

Mega Mushroom Lotion 5

I first realized just how well this product works when I used it after getting my eyebrows threaded. The lady at my favorite salon usually applies witch hazel on my forehead after threading, but that still leaves my skin red and aggravated. One day, I decided to use the toner instead of the witch hazel. Instantly, the freshly threaded skin felt calm and in a few hours the redness and irritation was gone. So was any skepticism I had about the effectiveness of this product.

Mega Mushroom Lotion 4

In addition to using this product with the Mega Mushroom Skin Cream and Serum, I have also mixed it in with Jojoba Oil, which too, gave me great results.  I have only done this at night, and I wake up to calmer and brighter skin! All my skin woes haven’t disappeared, but this is a great product that gets my skin under control, especially when I experiment with new products. As awesome as this toner is, it is a little bit on the pricey side.  I am not sure if patting it on is more wasteful than using it with a cotton ball, but I go through these bottles rather quickly.

Mega Mushroom Lotion 2

Pros of Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega Mushroom Skin Relief Lotion:

  • Free of parabens, phthalates and mineral oil and uses naturally sourced ingredients.
  • Free of alcohol and won’t damage or dry skin out.
  • Works effectively on both dry and oily skin.
  • Controls and keeps breakouts from occurring.
  • Calms aggravated skin instantly.
  • Reduces redness effectively.

Cons of Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega Mushroom Skin Relief Lotion:

  • Pricey for a toner. Although it is a big bottle, I go through these way too fast.
  • Availability. Although, might be available outside the U.S. through e-commerce sites, I’m sure you’d have to pay an exorbitant shipping price.

Bottom Line:

Although on the expensive side for a toner, this product really packs a punch. It’s suitable for all skin types and non-irritating on sensitive skin. If you are looking for a natural toner that will balance the skin and provide relief for multiple skin woes, this is your product.

  1. Devie…..loved reading your review, I totally love the products that you review and wish we got them here 🙂 Turmeric, basil, ginger, all used to be my grandmother’s favourite products, though I like readymade versions like these 🙂

    1. Are you serious, Jomol? It’s crazy how our grannies intuitively knew what’s best for our skin and health 😀 My naani swore by roses and used to make me pick roses and boil their water every morning!
I prefer readymade products too, only because they’re not messy and save a lot of time!

And, good morning to you, too 😀

      1. Yesh Devie, my great grandfather was a vaid, so he knew the importance of all these herbs, there are a lot of herbs exclusive to Kerala, and my granny knew all about it. Sadly, me being lazy, couldn’t put all her knowledge to use :((

        1. For me, its only the readymade stuff all the way. You know, there’s a pack of Kasturi manjal with me that I have not even opened since 4 months 😛 Everyday, I think of applying it, but get too lazy 😛

          1. Well, you’ve definitely inherited a proclivity to experiment with beauty products/ingredients from them 😀
I had to google Kasturi Manjal, which btw, I confused with Kasturi Mrig (thanks, Bigg Boss 😛 )
I’m pretty envious of your access to all these herbs, Jomol. Maybe, when you’re a little less busy (I refuse to think of you as “lazy,” since you work so hard) you could experiment with your own concoctions, after all it’s in your blood 🙂

            1. Hello the good morning the Jomols! How are you doing? Jomol, do you use any home made concoction for hair growth? I used to have lots of friends from Kerala who had these magic hair potions they used and their hair used to be thrice the volume of mine 🙁

  2. wow.. seems to be a must have for me too devie.. 🙂 thanx for introducing this to us. m sure it will relieve my oily sensitive skin from scorching summers and break outs.. 🙂

    1. Hey Neetu 😀 ! I’m sure it will. I think you should definitely ask the lovely ladies (well, or gentlemen 😛 ) at Sephora to make you a sample!

  3. I loved reading this review Devie…so detailed and informative! I saw this at some of the stores on my recent US trip – now I regret not picking it up! This mega mushroom range is pretty raved about right?

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Aarbee 🙂 . Yeah, Weil’s products get really good reviews, but honestly, the price is pretty prohibitive, even for most people here.
You should pick some products up next time, for sure 😀

  4. Whats with the long names these days! it is difficult to remember them :|. nonetheless I loved the review, will have to ask a friend from US to bring it for me, the shipping charges are so so high :(!

  5. Hey Devie, Nice review… I’m looking for a real good toner… Are these available online? I don’t think any Indian stores have them 🙁
