How To Dress As Per Body Type

We all die for a fit, well toned and hour-glass figure type body. Why? So, that we can look good and hardly any woman is perfectly happy with her body and body type. We all dream of some vague figure in our mind that keeps changing with the ever changing times and fashion.

What we all tend to forget is that we can look good or I should say perfect with the same body type that we have, if, and if, we dress up properly. There are many women out there who are not good looking per se, but look good because they dress up well and they wear clothes that suit them.

This post of today is enlightenment for all those women who have been wondering what “really” suits them and as I write this post, trust me, I am learning a hell lot of things about fashion.

Know Your Body Type:
The first rule to dressing up is to learn your body type. Now, Indian and western standards are also different. What is tall for them is very tall for us and what is short for them is good enough height for us. In this post, I am writing tips keeping Indian bodies in mind.  There are many body types. One needs to pick her true body type.

Petite or Short Body:

This means you are short in height and small boned in structure. The average height here is 5’3” so you are short heighted if you are below 5 Feet and 3 Inches.

What To Wear – Wear Vertical Stripes
Vertical Stripes

The vertical stripes on the top or on the dress add an illusion of vertical height thus giving you a taller look. Also, you should try wearing V-neck as it shows your neck and gives added height. You can also try wearing short skirts and this will make your legs look longer, Remember Rani looks taller and better in short skirts? You can also wear shirt and trousers and try tucking in the shirt. Wear dresses with heels, but please avoid wearing sky high heels as it will bring attention to your heels and thus to your short frame. You can wear high heel shoes over a trouser but make sure the trouser covers up the shoes. You can also try tying up your hair or adding the height onto the head by using a head band. Draping a well chosen saree can be a savior.

What To Avoid – Horizontal Stripes:
Large, wide or bright belts. In fact, you should avoid wearing anything in the horizontal look or anything that seems to divide your body into half!
Famous Face – Rani Mukherji, Urmila, Ellen Page.

Picture Say – Look at how this dark color saree has added to Rani’s height.

Pear Shape:

This means you are heavy at the bottom. Your lower structure is heavier than your top body.

What To Wear:  You should wear clothes that bring attention to your top part of the body. Flared skirts would suit you more. Try to wear vertical striped clothes on your lower half. Also choose dark colors on your bottoms as dark colors seem to reduce the size. In order to bring attention to your shoulders and the top part, wear clothes with heavy embellishments on the neck or on the chest. In summers, you can adorn a hat. Boot cut trousers will also suit you. Wear bright-colored tops with dark shades trousers and jeans. You can also wear anarkali suits, but their top must end quite above your waist line.

What To Avoid:
Avoid suits that have designs on the lower part of the kurta. Tight/fit skirts and clingy trousers are a no. Also, avoid pockets in the trousers. Opt for a flat front trouser. Do not wear tunics that end near the hips as it will make you look fat at the hip area.
Famous Face – Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Sonam Kapoor.

Athletic Body or NO-Curve Body Type:

An athletic body type person does not have curves. It means the top, waist and the bottom are all in one line.

What To Wear:
You should wear clothes that bring attention to the curvy parts of the body. Wear dresses with patterns as it will give the illusion of curves on the body.  Go for chiffon fabric as it falls on the body bringing out the curves. Wearing pleated skirt will help. Tight, body hugging jeans should be your staple. Wearing belts help.

Deepika Padukone

What to avoid – avoid tunics or dresses that do not have a defined waist line.
Famous face – Keira Knightley, Deepika Padukone.
Picture say – The broad, bright belt adds to the curve on Deepika’s body.

Heavy Top Body Type:

Your top part is heavier and bigger than your bottom.
What To Wear:
V Neck

You must try to bring attention to the lower part. Wear clothes with minimal embellishments on the top so as to divert the attention from the top. Wear clothes, suits that have designs on the lower portion so that the attention is on the bottom and not on the top. Wear wide v-neck halves in a light material. Go for bell bottom pants. Jackets also do well if they can be buttoned well below the bust.

What To Avoid:
Ruffle tops, spaghetti tops and complicated neck lines. Avoid high waisted trousers, skirts and jeans.

Famous Face – Scarlett Johansson, Ayesha Takia, Manisha Koirala.

Picture say – Though this is not the best picture to depict the perfect dressing sense for Ayesha, but still in this picture, her top does not look too heavy unlike in many other dresses.

Advice from Giorgio Armani for everyone – “Accentuate your best features and disguise what you are not so happy with. Choose outfits that fit and make you look comfortable rather than those that are up-to-the minute.”
