My Experience with Eau Thermale Avène Cleanance Mat Mattifying Emulsion:

Packaging: Avene cleanance MAT mattifying emulsion comes is an opaque, white colored, easy to squeeze tube packaging with a screw cap. The tube has nozzle type opening which helps in controlling the amount to dispense in one go. There is information provided over the tube, but in French. The tube is very compact and can be slid into the handbag easily. The tube has outer cardboard packaging that houses all the information regarding the product. Overall, the packaging is simple, functional and travel-friendly.

Texture and Fragrance: This mattifying emulsion is a gel based hydrating, mattifying moisturizer for oily skin. It has a thick consistency and very smooth texture. It glides over the skin very easily. The emulsion is actually translucent in appearance with a mild fragrance to it. The fragrance is subtle and does not irritate my nose. Some may find the fragrance off putting, but it is not at all unbearable. It gets disappear within a few seconds of application.

Usage/Result: To use, I take a tiny amount of emulsion and smooth it out over the face. Since it is just a basic mattifying moisturizer, I tend to skip the application on my neck sometimes. Also, I don’t use it twice a day or every other day. Then, I top it with my favourite Lotus matte sunscreen gel.

After applying, the emulsion gets absorbed into the skin soon enough, but leaves silicone feel behind. Because of the presence of silicone in the emulsion, the skin feels unbelievingly smooth and soft which I don’t like much. On top of that, the silicone feeling doesn’t go away till I cleanse my face. It feels like I have put too much synthetic ingredient on my face. My skin does not react adversely to the silicone and I never noticed any clogged pores while using silicone-based products. However, if you are sensitive to silicone-based products, then do not opt for this one. When it comes to me, sometimes I am happy with using silicone-based products, while sometimes not. All depends on days and mood. But, if you like using silicone-based product, then you can definitely try this out.

The emulsion instantly hydrates the skin and I don’t feel any kind of need to moisturize my skin throughout the day. It works well at keeping the makeup at place – it feels like I have applied a silicone based mattifying primer which keeps skin mattified for long if I follow up with powder products. I like to follow up with Innisfree no sebum mineral powder which keeps my skin, including nose area, mattified for more than 4 hours. I like to go this way since in summer I don’t prefer using anything except BB/CC cream that too occasionally.

It does not provide a pure matte finish, but kind of demi-matte. When talking about its performance, if I use it alone then the emulsion keeps the skin mattified for nearly 2.5 to 3 hours and then I can feel my noise oily – more like slick. The sebum along with the super smoothness of silicone makes my nose feel slick. Other than that, my forehead and jawline remains same.

This emulsion is good when I go out for only couple of hours. However, I am usually out till evening and when combined with the heat in Mumbai, this isn’t working as I expected it to be or what it claimed to be. It fails to provide a long-lasting mattifying skin.

Overall, it is a basic hydrating-mattifying emulsion that will keep skin mattified for a couple of hours, provided your skin doesn’t produce excessive sebum – just like my nose area. Because, if your skin produces excess sebum, then it may not at all be effective in providing demi-matte finish.

Cons of Eau Thermale Avène Cleanance Mat Mattifying Emulsion:

  • Contains silicon.

IMBB Rating: 3.6/5
Would I Repurchase Eau Thermale Avène Cleanance Mat Mattifying Emulsion?
No. I wouldn’t be repurchasing because, I didn’t like that a basic mattifying emulsion gives too much of silicone feel on the skin. Also, I am not impressed with its mattifying power.
