Elizabeth Taylor Diamond and Sapphires Eau De Toilette Review

About the Perfume:

This perfume was introduced in 1993 in its floral fruity composition. The top notes bring grassy lemon freshness of lily of the valley, heliotrope, melon, galbanum and juicy peach. Rose, jasmine, rhubarb, ylang-ylang and spices make the heart very seductive. The base embraces with its milky warm sandalwood along with vetiver, amber and musk.

Diamonds and Sapphires

Elizabeth Taylor was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful women and I have always admired her. Every time I think about her, I get that picture of Cleopatra in my mind.  Elizabeth Taylor (February 27, 1932 – March 23, 2011) was a British-American actress. From her early years as a child star, she became one of the great screen actresses of Hollywood’s Golden Age. She reigned the box office as the quintessential movie star taking the breath away from viewers with her glamorous looks and those distinctive, velvet eyes. As one of the world’s most famous film stars, Taylor was recognized for her acting ability and for her glamorous lifestyle and beauty.

While watching a documentary about her, last year when she expired, I learnt about her love for Diamonds.  She owned some of the world’s most magnificent jewellery, including the 33-carat “Krupp Diamond,” the Duchess of Windsor diamond brooch, the Grand Duchess of Russia emeralds, the “LaPeregina Pearl” (which was a Valentine present to her from Richard Burton), and the famous pear-shaped 69-carat “Burton-Cartier Diamond” Burton gave her in 1969 (subsequently renamed the “Burton-Taylor Diamond”). Her Husband, Michael Todd gave her a 29-carat diamond ring during their marriage.

In 2006, she introduced a line of diamond and precious stone jewelry called “House of Taylor.” The designs are said to be inspired by certain favorite pieces in her own collection. She actually wrote a book on jewelry and is considered to be an authority on the subject.

Ingredients

I believe her love for diamonds and jewellery served as an inspiration for the perfume line she launched with “Elizabeth Arden.” The first fragrance in the line, women’s scent “Passion,” debuted in 1987. The men’s companion “Passion” scent was launched in 1989. In 1991, the enduring best-seller White Diamonds was introduced. Other gem-inspired fragrances followed, including the Fragrant Jewels collection—Diamonds and Emeralds, Diamonds and Rubies, Diamonds and Saphhires—which came on the market in 1993. A tribute to Taylor’s unique and celebrated eye color—Violet Eyes—is the newest fragrance in the line, and the last scent introduced before Taylor’s death in 2011.

Elizabeth Taylor fragrances were made in collaboration with perfumers Sophia Grojsman and Carlos Benaim.

I have the perfume “Diamonds and Sapphires EDT” in my collection. I got this around a year-and-half back, so can’t really recall the exact price, but I guess it was around INR 1800 for 100 ml (not sure).

Diamonds and Sapphires

I guess my admiration for Elizabeth Taylor made me buy this fragrance.  It comes in a nice, long, glass bottle with a golden cap and the top rim gives an illusion of diamonds, which is actually just metal, carved out like that. The packaging is quite old school style and so is the fragrance.  I mean it has a very classy, conventional, feminine vintage feel to it (and so this would make an ideal gift for your moms too :P)

I find the fragrance predominately a floral one. It smells a bit soapy at the beginning, but it settles down to nice floral notes, but again, it is not one typical flowery fragrance and when I observe it close, it’s a mix of floral, musk, amber and slight rose. The hint of musk in it may not appeal to some, but I seem to have a thing for such mix of musk in perfumes. This however has no spicy notes in it.

Ingredients

The fragrance is not mild, gentle, light kind and I find it to be a strong, sharp fragrance but definitely elegant, sophisticated and not something heady.

I think the fragrance would appeal mostly to ladies in the 20+ age group and it is not a girlie/flirty/bubbly fragrance at all!

It is the kind of fragrance, which I would personally prefer to wear for my evenings out. For day time wear, it would be a little too formal. I cannot say that this is one of my favourites, but there are the days, when I absolutely love it on me.
Lastly, it’s very elegant and feminine scent I would say. The staying power is not really grand, but it survives easily for 5-6 hours on me.

Diamonds and Sapphires

What I Like about Elizabeth Taylor Diamond and Sapphires Eau De Toilette:

  • Mix of floral , amber and musk.
  • Elegant, feminine fragrance.
  • I find it apt for formal occasions and an evening out.
  • Pretty packaging.
  • Decent staying power.

Diamonds and Sapphires

What I Do Not Like about Elizabeth Taylor Diamond and Sapphires Eau De Toilette:

  • It is not mild, light kind of fragrance, is slightly sharp and strong.
  • Smells a little soapy in the beginning.
  • The slight musk in it may not impress some of you.
  • Not something for the younger age group.
